Hey mate - great interview - but on an aside - you should have given Jen the hint that she could play Shadowheart in the game (instead of a custom character) and romance Karlach for real (imaginary). I was always going to romance Shadowheart in my 1st play through after playing early access, but when Karlach turned up . . Act 2 was really hard with my toughest choice being which one (I picked Shadowheart btw - and I think Karlach also has a little written crush on Shadowheart as well from the conversations after I made my choice)

Holy cow...hi there, I'm Tom- the voice director who Jen mentions when talking about the Romance scenes. (And who she had brunch with). So sweet to have a shout out like that so thank you, Jen. Actors' and Crews' safety is paramount when it comes to handling sensitive topics and scenes - it happens in Film, TV and Theatre, so Production in Games should also handle material in the same way too!

1:25:02 Similarly for me, what draws me to Shadowheart is the intrinsic goodness in her. She has been brainwashed by a cult and had her memory wiped, but she still approves of when you're kind to animals and when you help people. She is not selfish or cruel at all. I guess it makes me kind of hopeful (even if it is fiction) that despite someone's circumstances, they can still be a good person.

It is a healthy thing to think. If you don't believe that, humans become evil by nature. Even if it was true, that means you live surrounded by potential enemies. That is not a good philosophy for a happy life.

as someone with ADHD I completely resonate with what Jennifer said. it took a long time to get over those feelings of lack of self worth and to realize my brain is literally wired differently than others and to not be so hard on myself. I have autism and my daughter has all the signs for ADHD but hasn’t been diagnosed yet but so much of what she said fits my daughter. Unfortunately no one ever mentions how to deal with it. She obviously needs to go to school And do her homework so just saying she doesn’t have to isn’t an option but she cries all the time when I tell her she can’t watch her tablet all night and stuff and I don’t really know how to deal with it. Regarding the game I haven’t even played it but just watching all the reviews I could tell I would like Shadowheart.
@hoid9407

@@wertywerrtyson5529 Hey, umm, I'm by no means a medical professional, I'd get your daughter in to see someone for sure so that she can get some personal help. However, I didn't get diagnosed with ADHD till last year at 31, and my 8 year old son has it as well, now that I know what to look for. If you're looking for some basic help, here are a few things that I and my son have found very helpful- Centering exercises - Our brains want to be everywhere at once. When I was working with the SF, they gave us a tool that they use frequently. They called it SLLFS (pronouced Silfs). Stop, Look, Listen, Feel, Smell. You stop whatever you're doing and take like 1 minute just pausing. Whatever that looks like in the moment. Sitting down, getting comfortable. Then you look around. Take note of everything you can see. Give each thing a little attention, then move on to the next. Next, listen. In a building, do you hear the AC? Can you hear the fan in your computer? Someone talking nearby? What are they saying? The house settling? Then feel. How does your body feel right then? Any aches, anywhere cold or warm? Is your mouth dry, are you hungry? Then smell. Once you're this focused, you might notice smells that you had been blocking out. Then execute the mission/task you have in front of you. This has worked wonders for me. Because with ADHD you want to pay attention to everything, this allows you to do that, but in a directed way, and by the end of it you've kind of taken charge. So now you can start your task and put your energy into it because you've channeled your whole brain into it. So I've helped my son do it, and he says when he gets distracted at school he'll catch himself and quickly do SLLFS to focus up. Doesn't have to take a lot of time. Similarly, guided meditation. I've found that ADHD people are more likely to have VERY visual imaginations. Guiding them through meditation and painting a picture in their mind helps them calm down while giving them some things to focus on. Imagination requires a lot of brain power, so you can stop all the other thoughts by focusing on the big hard thought. And the other big things are understanding that when your kid says they don't have homework, or they don't know what they want for dinner, or what have you, they really don't think they do. Once that homework got assigned and was no longer in front of them, it stopped existing in their brain. So having some kind of visual reminder or physical inspection of their responsibilities will help. Also task breakdowns. "Clean your room" is a paralyzing command for some people with ADHD, because it has a lot of components and when they hit their first unknown, "Where does this go?" rather than set it to the side they'll get totally sidetracked and just give up. "Pick up your clothes off the floor." "Good, now toys." "Good, now take everything off your bed." Change your sheets. These direct, simple commands will help them do things. And once you start that pattern, they'll learn to keep following that pattern, so that "clean your room" isn't a command, so much as a prompt to start a known routine. Routines work wonders.

I just got diagnosed with ADHD last year and everything she says resonates. especially the school and homework part. I coasted through highschool and never really learned how to study. most of my assignments were done on the bus ride to school. Had good grades. College was a real kick in the ass. Left me feeling like a failure and kind of aimless for about a decade. Didn't have any desires and couldn't make myself do anything. I would literally stare at an icon for a game i wanted to play on my desktop and i just could not click the damn thing and start it. No hobbies. Minimal social life. Would just not talk to certain people for months at a time. It really does build up like she says: all the little things become one giant ball of shame where you constantly ask yourself "wtf is wrong with me?" Then i started therapy and found out. Understanding everything completely changed how i see myself. Of course i didnt do well in college. Of course i have no motivation. Of course my memory is terrible and i always backed out of social commitments. You stop looking at those things as personal failures and learn to actually be proud of yourself for adapting and being able to overcome these things despite having no clue that your executive functions are impaired. And thats what it really is. Youll see a lot of people mocking us saying just try harder or stop being distracted with your iphone. They have no clue what ADHD really is. I didn't either. TLDR: go to therapy.

Been wondering about whether I should try to get a diagnosis, but I feel like I'd probably get told there's nothing wrong with me. I've had no idea what I want to do with my life, career-wise. Hate studying because unless I'm really interested in something I just can't do it (and I'm not interested in a lot, so...). The only thing I can focus on is videogames but I tend to hyperfocus to an obsessive degree sometimes. Avoid social situations generally too, like you've said. My brain feels broken most of the time, when I'm comparing myself to other people.

Astarion made me laugh so often, Karlach is just the good soul of the camp, a heart of gold and so naughty 😏 The voice acting is one of the best, if not THE best I have ever heared in a video game and character animations match it so perfectly. Astarion complaining about being in a group of weirods is absolut gold.

@@NovaTrap1312 entire light side / dark side conflict could be explained and fixed just based on kreia's teachings. Makes a lot of sense too when force itself finally has enough of their shit and wipes out both Jedi AND Sith order through Anakin. It is the worship of extremes which continuously plunges galaxy into chaos. Still nobody makes those connections in Disney though. Anakin would be the perfect teacher for it, he learned from Sidious who hoarded knowledge unlike any other, he'd have come across Darth Revan and his era of Jedi and Sith. Ofc Sidious would disagree but anyone who held such power through manipulation alone would earn tremendous respect from him.

Voice acting and motion capture are absolutely magic in BG3. They are the reason why non C-RPG players are loving the game. The impact of all dialogues having actual acting is huge and not only for new joiners but for every player having emotions.

Dan, thank you so much for this interview and, in general, all the BG3 interviews. You gave them a lot of space to talk, which seems rare nowadays, and the result are such genuine and engaging interviews. 2 hours, and it's like time flies. Of course, thanks as well to Jen and all the actors for giving their time! And to Aliona for giving us Jen for that entire time. This was super interesting to watch, with all the behind the scenes info, as well as other topics. I did not know, for example, or was not expecting, that the research into ADHD for assigned female at birth people is less advanced, but of course why wouldn't it be, in this world we live in. But yeah, it's awesome learning new things about other topics! Thanks for keeping feminism, LGBTQ+ and other minorities in the forefront. And Circe is noted down, greek mythology from a woman's voice? Awesome. I'll have to try dark Shadowheart in some playthrough, if I actually can manage to actually take the bad route. I'm sure it will be fun, getting my heart broken by watching all my companions take bad decisions. To finish this bible of a comment, thank you, Jen, for the riggers shoutout!

Jen's voice acting definitely played a huge part of why I enjoyed Shart's arc so much. Incredibly written and made me question myself as I role play the supposed hero who realized, also in real life, that I could be really untrusting. Lovely interview and thanks for sharing DAG!

Shadowheart is an amazing characer. Her journey is one of the best thing to experience in the game imo. Massive props to Jennifer to voice her, great job. I also resonate deeply with ADHD. It helps so much to be respected and also helps with working with the condition.

Thank you, Dan! It was a wonderful interview or podcast, I do not know what it was, so I called what I think it was. But I felt a deep connection and didn't even speed-up the interview. I enjoyed this magnificent, cozy and touching conversation. Jennifer is a brilliant, open-minded, authentic, empathetic person. (these are rare qualities for our days, and this is her unique feature) I was completely immersed to your conversation in the interview. I admire these human traits and people who have the same traits as Jennifer and I have. I would like people to be the same as Jennifer, or at least remain themselves. (I mean positive traits) These are the rarest people like diamonds, and there are so few of them in the world that even one such twinkling light can illuminate the darkness of our daily lives just by talking in a KZbin video. From the bottom of my heart, I thank Jennifer and Dan for this wonderful interview, which helped me radiate hope and continue my journey in this incarnation on Earth. P.S. Sorry, for writting a non-sense. I was to enthusiastic to write the comment. I usually don't do that only when I felt emotionaly gripped by something interesting. And so, for me, writing a comment is a difficult and rare case.

I 100% understand her point about having an official diagnosis and being able to relate to the "This is me, oh this is me too." It allowed me to be more self aware of the traits and to be better about them.

This is the game the whole world needs right now. The positivity in the game even with the calamitous events feels great. The way Lae'Zel starts out so gruff and mean and softens to the point she wakes you up to watch the sunrise with her is amazing. Shadowheart, despite the dark story displays such a sweetness and innocence, it's a one of a kind game.

A ton of what Jennifer English said in this interview really resonated with me. I was also diagnosed with ADHD later in life, and I've also had a long journey as I try to see my own emotions/sensitivity as a possible blessing, and not a curse. Seeing the people who make the art/stories you look up to having similar experiences to yours is pretty special. And Dan, I'm making my way through these BG3 interviews and I think you do a great job engaging people, sort of following lines of questions that will really give them an opportunity to share their personality/interests and give the people watching a sense of that person. Thank you for that!

I want to thank you for this great interview, the time spent flying. I'm someone who has played many RPGs, specially JRPG since the 90s, I've experienced great stories, but I have to admit that I've never experienced something like Baldur's Gate 3 and never fell in love more with a character than it happened to me with Shadowheart, the writing of her character and the brilliant voice acting made Shadowheart become the greatest character in video games ever for me (and I've played MANY games), this is something quite extraordinary, and I'm happy to meet this lovely person Jennifer English who is behind this work of art, I am really thankful for everyone involved in creating this masterpiece; as a fellow woman, I can't feel prouder to see Shadowheart becoming a legendary character and knowing that it was greatly because of someone so kind, smart and interesting like Jennifer English. Thank you so much Dan for doing this interview and letting us hear Jennifer's thoughts and knowing more about the insights of what went through the creation of this beautiful game. BG3 is sure to be memorable over the years. I'm born in 84 and been playing games since 6 and I'm gonna be honest I was never deep into the D&D thing until pretty much now. But oh boy, this game... It's like all your wildest dreams of possibilities within a game can truly come true. And you remember that "RPG" is what THAT should mean. And then all the different actors bringing to life their characters in a authentic way... Like, I cannot believe there's a human being out there that sounds like this - but her name is Jennifer English and my wildest dreams are just a small part of the wonderful real world we live in...
