I have one boy who almost starved to death a few months ago. He got really sick and within days deteriorated to be basically skin and bone. I spent weeks getting him healthy and fattening him up with nutritional meals. But because of all this he's now the most food motivated rat ever. He lunges out of his hiding spot every time I come to the cage just to check for a treat, thankfully he doesn't bite though, just puts his mouth on my hand then realises I'm not food and backs off. I've mostly stopped him from this behaviour though. He and his brother know two tricks: kisses and beg. Kisses was to stop him biting because he needs to lick my hand when he wants a treat. And beg was originally just being taught to his brother who has a cute white belly so I could get him to stand up for a treat and then I could show people his belly. But now they both know it simply because Kiba is a glutton.. that being said watching this video made me think that I should invest more time into training Kiba. Remi isn't interested in training and every trick I teach him he does excessively even when not asked then throws a tantrum when he doesn't get a treat.

Money issues? That is so sad, as Rats are About as affordable as a pet can be...But they are lucky to have found you. I once wanted the 'Old English Rat' { Rattus _rattus- } as opposed to Rattus _norvegicus_ but Rattus is extremely rare in England now, in fact, they are one of the UK's rarest mammals {as opposed to _norvegicus_ } found only near historic Ports. Bristol Zoo has an amazing 'display' of' wild' rats that live in an ''Attic''....really impressive.

Its always such a joy to me when I have a rat that likes hand wrestling. IDK why, but I find a lot of my girls just don't end up liking it, even as babies. It's not that they'll be aggressive, they just won't be interested at all. We have 7 rats atm though, and 4 of them all like wrestling! 3 are still very young, a few months at the oldest. But Lillian is over a year old and still really enjoys it. She loves being jostled back and forth, or gently tossed away from me when I sit down. She never really fully wrestles back like our babies currently do (they'll gently nip back or pounce on you haha). She just gets excited by it!

My rats found feathers to be quite interesting, and played with them and chased after them. It probably helps to put a bit of some sort of treat on the toy you want them to play with. Otherwise they'll loose interest when they realize that there's no connection between the toy and food. Rats are so very food orientated. My rats mostly liked to run around and explore the room. When they were done with that, they would sometimes come and sleep with me in my shirt. Nothing like a warm ratty lump wedged in your sleeve ^.^

A dog biscuit on a string works well. So too, gently tossing them on the bed. Mine would go mad with this and keep running back for more! Fluffing them with a soft floppy brush like a duster brush drives them mad too. Another one - an old towel or similar tied up to hang just touching the floor - young ones especially like to pounce on each other underneath. Remote controlled mice/rats are good and other cat toys too. There's no end to the fun you can have with them!
