There is almost nothing to compare to the 70s language, the 70s imagery, the 70s flair of "Shaft" (1971), starring Richard Roundtree as the iconic black inspector. Due to Roundtree's recent death, we will take a listen to Isaac Haye's grooving soundtrack, wonderfully orchestrated by Johnny Allen and J. J. Johnson and of course, the film version of Haye's Academy Award winning title song. Enjoy!

Beautiful. Just beautiful. Hayes elevated a musical idiom that we still hear somewhat today. The guitar intro itself is iconic. I like 'Shaft's Cab Ride' and 'Shaft Rides Again' myself with their great orchestrations. Thanks Fred. This is going to be a fun weekend.

Hello, Fred! A small piece of a long resistance won when " Shaft " was released and its soundtrack competed for an Oscar -- the score losing to " Summer of' 42 "( by Michel Legrand ), but the song winning ( including the moving " Bless the Beasts and Children " from Stanley Kramer's film ). " Theme From Shaft " not only won but determined the sound that would dominate the decade all over the world ( it was even used as " Breaking News " during the Lebanese War by the radio station " Voice of Lebanon "!! )! The guitar intro by Charles " Skip " Pitts and the " Shaft! " delivered by the trio Patsy Lewis, Rose Williams and Thelma Hopkins would become the hallmarks of an era. Later, it would have a faster pace, it would gain new synthesizers, a string ensemble and it would give rise to Disco Music, and a party that has not ended to this day!! Thanks and bye!!

I often return to the track 'Soulsville'. I love the whole montage sequence it's part of; both sound and visuals bring to life that place and time so vividly, but to me, the lyrics especially are such a striking description of how hard it is to escape the cycle of poverty. "If you are hungry, what would you do?..."

Grande Fred❤😀 Very cool Isaac Hayes🤎👏🏻 RIP Richard Roundtree🤎🙏🏼 Film cult simbolo della "blaxploitation"💥💪🏾 Azione a ritmo sostenuto e costante, un "eroe" e un'ambientazione inconsueti, ma che non vanno mai aldilà di una trasgressione superficiale, sono l'indovinata formula che ha decretato il successo di questo film, primo dei tre dedicati all'investigatore inventato dal romanziere Ernest Tidyman. Il personaggio di Shaft è un insieme di stereotipi sul detective: determinazione, arguzia e forza, tutti piuttosto pronunciati. John Shaft viene ritratto come un personaggio quasi sensuale, sicuro di sé, autorevole. Nel suo essere razionale, sicuro e dalla parte della giustizia, Shaft tende a smentire gli stereotipi ancora diffusi all'epoca, secondo cui i neri erano solo spacciatori, papponi o gangster. Nel 2000 è stato scelto per essere conservato nel National Film Registry della Biblioteca del Congresso degli Stati Uniti. Patrimonio della cultura pop. Ai film venne affiancata una serie televisiva omonima, sempre con Roundtree. I would love to hear the suites from the sequels, "Shaft's Big Score" and "Shaft In Africa".
