Amazing! I’m loving all the west TX visits. Places like that and the cemetery really work the imagination. Thank you! Oh I like the music😎👍🏻

That was GREAT. We stopped in Shafter on the way back from Big Bend to El Paso airport. We wanted a place to eat lunch and as we were driving along we saw this patch of green in an otherwise sea of tan. What a cool little ghost town and that was after we had stayed in another cool little ghost town--Terlingua. Love your videos!

I have a friend that still lives full-time there in Shafter, he's a retired school shop teacher from Presidio

Thank you so much for sharing your Shafter adventure with us. Very interesting ghost town. To bad that so much of the ruins are off limits.

That was the town that the satellite landed in at the start of the Andromeda Strain movie 50 years ago just one of many filmed out there that most people don't know were done in the Big Bend.

Last time I visited the town, the memorial boards were outside covered by shades. Now they are indoors in what looks like a newer cinder block building. Wonder what year that was constructed.

Wow--that's a really cool graveyard. My grandmother liked graveyards, I never understood why until I got older.
@chadb18783 жыл бұрын
Occasionally when relatives were in town while growing up we would drive around and visit the grave sites of ancestors generations back...the older folk would read or recall accounts of their lives, accomplishments and even failures. I was fascinated at the stories and it gave me a great respect for what it was to live before all the modern technology we had even back then.

"Not many water sources..." Should explore Ft Stockton's city park with the Pecos River. Or off I-10, Balmorhea (bal muh RAY) and their state park and giant pool. Cibolo Creek - which you found - is pretty extensive, actually. But thanks for the great video. Oh, another interesting stop might be the salt flats between Ft Stockon and Pecos. The roadview is small but it's a fairly large area. Once New Mexico blocked off most of the Pecos River, lotsa West Texas town dried up... places like Big Lake used to be name for good reasons. Texas did sue NM successfully. NM pays Texas in dollars. Not in water, though.

This town was named after a Union soldier that won the Medal on Honor. William Rufus Shafter, later a General and had the nickname of Pecos Bill for his time in west Texas.

Elephant Rock is a little ways out of town… also supposedly there is a Silhouette of Lincoln in the rock formations along that highway toward Presidio but I have never been able to make it out. I live these old towns and buildings. I’ve driven around Shafter several times and it’s such a cool place.

My grandmother told me a story a very long time ago. My grandmother was the oldest of her siblings. They went to visit an aunt of hers that lived in Shafter. Grandmother was 7 or 8 years of age when this happened. She was intrigued and scared of walking into her aunt's house because it had wooden floors. I was laughing so much because she had stated that she had never seen wooden floors in her life. She was crawling on all fours like a cat, well, she and her siblings because she thought she was going to fall through the floor.
