Back in the day, Shakatak were all you ever used to hear on the radio back in the early eighties. They were that good! Their music is typical of the period. Jazz funk, slappy bass with some lead guitar and keyboards from Bill Sharpe. They had few changes in their line up, but it didn’t dampen their amazing ability to churn out the hits. Loved em and as so many still keep saying, there ain’t nuffink like it out there today more’s the pity!

Ah the brilliant Shakatak... Bill Sharpe, Jill Seward & Co belting out the summer anthem of 1984 as far as the clubs and beaches were concerned. This track was heard thumping out of our "Ghetto Blasters" and car radios. Shakatak were even better live - absolute privilege to see them live in concert. I bet Bill and Jill chuckled at Steve Wright's opening remarks here...

The best era of TOTP. Early-mid 80s so much great music. And TOTP at its most pomp. 1984 is the peak musical year for me. This song takes me to my Summer holiday. Great underrated band. Used to love all their early 80s smooth jazz. Also if you listen carefully there is a background chorus that goes Down on the street (shoutin' ..talkin'.. laughin' ...down on the street) Down Down on the street (snappin' fingers dancin' ...down on the street) Down. Down on the street (shoutin'.. talkin'.. laughin' ...down on the street) Down Down on the street Down. i havent heard it live though...

UN-believable. I spent so many years trying to figure out this song. I probably heard it in Early 85 while still in the second year of secondary school (would have been 13 going on 14 at the time). Absolutely loved it back then and it has been popping up in my head over the decades. Then I was trying to search 'Scout In The Street' a few times over the last decade or so, and just couldn't find it. And now, I'm laughing because it is Shakatak. Must have been my brother playing this on the record player back then because he had some Shakatak. I've waited years for this moment. I was honestly starting to think I might not ever hear it again. Managed to knock two tunes off that list in one evening. The other one was 'Julia And Company' with the song 'Breakin Down'. I love the internet.

@@podlou9939 Thanks, I didn't know the actual song name. I only remembered the words 'Breakin it down' from the song (and remembered the other words incorrectly). Those are the words that mainly popped up in my head over the years. I happened to search that when the song popped into my head yet again after I found this Shakatak song. So glad I found it.

sam murphy Yes, they're a great band, good fun fir socialising, Bill Sharpe has been especially kind to me, sometines putting me on their guest lists. The Stables is close to my heart, it was indeed literally just a stable when I went to music camp there in the 70s, I'm from Stony Stratford and would regularly be shipped off to see the Dankworths sometimes at at their homes. Shakatak are terribly underrated.
