When the Nazis were put on trial the prosecutors *rightfully* told them that “I was following orders,” was not an acceptable excuse when the orders are criminal or unjust. Yet we expect our own to follow unjust orders and as a result, nearly a million people died. Rules and laws aren’t always just. They will not save us from bad ideas or bad people. Only better ideas mandated by our conscience will.
@taiwandxt64932 ай бұрын
It's not an acceptable excuse when crimes against humanity are directly committed by the soldiers in question and they were directly ordered to engage in such atrocities. That same sort of logic does not apply here because UNAMIR wasn't complicit in helping the Hutus commit genocide. And not to mention, they were not told that they could not protect people, they were just ordered that they could not use force to intervene. While it is a difficult order and incredibly flawed, it's one that isn't necessarily unjust because it had its just merit. They were sent to the country to oversee the implementation of the peace agreement and prevent the escalation of violence. If they used force to intervene in the Genocide that would have compromised the impartiality of UNAMIR to the FAR and the Hutu Militias, and they would have all been killed. Not just the Peacekeepers, but the hundreds of unarmed UN Observers, Police, and Civilians that were there as part of UNAMIR. They didn't have the ammunition to fight. Now, they should have been given the ammunition, but that is a different discussion.

@taiwandxt6493Ай бұрын
@Prof_Tickles92 No, it wouldn't have, and the FAR and the Interahamwe were aware of this. They knew the west were not going to waste resources on such a small African nation like Rwanda. That was their entire strategy with killing the 10 Belgian Peacekeepers. They knew that if they killed Western troops, instead of a proportional response, the western forces were just going to pull out because they didn't want the trouble. I mean, you watched the movie. You heard the U.S Ambassador, "There's no way Washington is going to put troops on the ground in Rwanda, General. No way." So, if UNAMIR intervened, that would just cause the Hutu militia to retaliate and force them to withdraw from the country. Instead, UNAMIR relied on non-forceful methods to save lives, and they made a difference.

Respect to Romeo, but what fucking good is a peacekeeper who isn’t allowed to keep the peace?
@taiwandxt64934 ай бұрын
Definitely agree. In order to properly keep the peace, you need to be able to make it in areas where it starts breaking down. When you're trying to maintain your home, you don't leave a hole in your roof, you don't just wait till the roof collapses and move away, you take necessary action to fix it. But, that's also a double edge sword because if you do that, depending on the circumstances that could get you involved in the conflict as a belligerent, which is not something you are supposed to do as a Peacekeeper. That was the rationale behind this. If they intervene, they will be actively participating in war on one side, which would only serve to escalate the violence. If you're curious, UN Peacekeeping policy has since changed. If this similar thing were to happen today, the Peacekeepers would've been allowed to intervene.

Gen Dallaire should have been allowed to carry out his mandate. Seems the UN was taken over by certain uncaring bureaucrats many yrs ago, the UN relies on troops from various nations with different motivations etc. It should have more support & do its job fairly, but the world still has huge areas underdeveloped. I was a uni student doing international relations as the genocide happened& come from a military family on both sides, it would have been a honour to serve Gen Dalliare or similar but I was not allowed due to my health. Still Iam part Ukrainian& with full scale war maybe allowed in Ukraines international legion after recent rule changes.Please note the UNs had success in Africa as well as failure for all sides,but the failure includes Israel,Lebanon & Ukraine.

I visited Rwanda in July of 2024. It was hard to image 850,000 slaughtered by government, army, and one’s friends and neighbors. I visited the Genocide Memorial and could only wonder at mankind’s cruelty. But now Rwanda is a bustling and thriving country although there is far too much poverty. But the police are everywhere to guarantee public safety and the roads and streets trash-free. The economy is tech-oriented and upward trending. Rwanda still has her problems; forty per cent poverty, too many unemployed under thirty years of age, and a need for better senior care. But under its present leadership is is on her way to health and sanity. And yes, her people are wonderful. Nonetheless old memories may still linger among the elderly and I pray for their healing. Rwanda is a beautiful country with much to offer the tourist in accommodation, transportation, and food. I pray she doesn’t entangle herself in the ongoing crisis of countries around her. May God keep her peaceful.

Wasn't there a trial in Nuremburg, for those who just "obeyed" orders I mean why did they obey the UN instead of do what was right?
@taiwandxt64932 ай бұрын
Well, a few things. One is that we didn't actively convict those who were indeed just following orders at Nuremberg. It was a popular defense however for those who were tried and executed, that defense didn't really hold up because they were found to have been willful collaborators. Secondly is that the Peacekeepers here were not actively ordered to kill people, they were ordered not to intervene. That may not have been what was right however there is a difference between directly participating in genocide and being the unwilling bystander to it. In terms of why didn't they just disobey the UN, well, they did. But, they didn't in the ways that they wanted because it would've been suicide. If they intervened in the genocide, then they would have been considered by the Hutu government as taking a side, and they would've become belligerents in the broader war. And, UNAMIR did not have the resources to take on the Rwandan Army. They would've been slaughtered themselves. Better to bear witness than to just die.
@marshamarshamarsha45672 ай бұрын
@@taiwandxt6493 I am sorry, but I disagree. First of all, the UN is a result of the Nuremberg trials and so that organization made a big deal out of soldiers just following orders & bystanders who did nothing to help. I don't give a rats butt, if they were soldiers of a certain country or so-called UN soldiers. It is this body, the UN who established these laws for others but not themselves? Hogwash and hypocrites. They knew damn well what was going on well in advance and no excuses from those who claim the moral high-ground over the rest of us.

The film starts with a 22 second pre-credit sequence which no viewer can relate to and is completely pointless. The frequent brief flashbacks also serve no purpose and are just annoying. The film is basically a modern-day horror wherein a UN peace-keeping force is shown to be almost totally ineffective in keeping peace. It is a very effective film but not worth watching when it includes 1001 ad breaks which just show complete disregard for the horrors the people suffered.
