Shaker-style hoods helped Pontiac sell nearly a half-million cars - even if the vast majority were sealed shut and did nothing. But they weren’t just for Firebirds. And the newest ones have a strange surprise hidden just beneath the skin.

$22M? You math is a little fuzzy. 440K x $5 = $2.2M. Still cool episode about a car that everybody loved back in the day even if it had "no balls" after the muscle car era.

Hi Steve, great video on the Pontiac Shaker hood. I'll keep it short today and leave a little extra room for Mr. GoogleGP's write-up on his beautiful Anniversary Trans Am here in the comment section. 😂. Morning 👋🏼sir. I had the opportunity to buy one of those Can Am models it was sitting in a closed down Pontiac dealership. Fuquay Pontiac out of Danville, VA. I went in to buy up the cars in the back lot that were left. The Can Am's engine had been partially taken apart. The fellow selling just couldn't decide on a price and later in the year called me up with a number I had to refuse. I ended up with about 40 cars. Most of them were wrecked a couple of 65-66 GTOs but mostly cars from the 70s big Bonnevilles, Grand Prix, LeMans, etc. Apparently, Danville PD must have used 77 LeMans for detective cars. I bought 4 of those. I drove one, Silver, with red interior LeMans until it sold. It had the certified speedometer posi-rear, etc. They had the brakes set up so the rear would lock up first. I'm not sure if that was part of the police package or not. I just noticed that all 4 cars that this occurred. But it made for some cool bootleg U-turns😂. This was of course before ABS. They all had the RTS badge on the dashboard but that was probably standard in Pontiac land. To get a visual, these were the same patrol cars in the movie Smokey and the Bandit. If you look closely in a few chase scenes. Some of the Pontiac LeMans patrol cars had the Shaker style hood, and even a few of the Fury police cars had shaker scoop on them! We all know movie magic, so that being said, whether factory or not, it sure would be scary looking in the rearview mirror 👀. Y'all have a blessed day 🤙🏼Namaste 🙏🏼

Plenty of room for everyone. LOL. I bought out a few Virginia GM dealers circa 2002 along with a lot of GM dealers throughout the country. My coworker (who is an Oldsmobile club judge) and I would go half and buy out all of the NOS parts that they had that fit our applications. We had (and I still have) the GM parts computer, so we were able to do a "Where Used" search in the system and then pull up the applications and know if they fit our vehicles or not. I got many NOS parts this way. We also had access to the parts locators so we knew who had what. My friend had bought out Harper Oldsmobile in Brooklyn, NY years back and I sold the remainder of that inventory about 15-20 years ago, and kept some for myself. For a time, I was considered an "A" employee of Roper Pontiac in Joplin, MO although I was never employed there. The parts manager gave me employee pricing and free shipping. He then told me, "Call my friend at Lowe Chevrolet across town and tell 'em Jim sent ya." Sure enough, the parts manager at Lowe was expecting my call and sold me all of his NOS inventory too. I bought the last NOS oil and temperature gauge for F body cars. It's a one year only part. I had a few guys in the Trans Am groups begging to buy it, but I still have it. One of the members called before me and got a lazy guy that said, "We don't have that". I called a few days later, got one of the older gentlemen in the parts department and he found it. He said, "I'm hoping y'all want it, them there stairs are a killer at my age...". I got it cheap. I have the last set of NOS GM Pontiac V8 motor mounts and engine brackets among other NOS items.

i always did wonder why they ran the shaker on the Mopar cop cars. A friend had a full sized wagon with the RTS badge, so yes, GM was proud of that. Ford would do the TRX package on their Mustangs, which didn't last as long as the RTS.

Growing up I always believed that Pontiac was at the forefront of automotive technology with their Firebirds, Trans Am and the 73 Grand AM with wide track. Ashamed GM decided to kill that brand off along with their Olds division. Now it’s all SUV’s for the most part and they are all starting to look alike. Thanks for taking us on these automotive tours😢

Back in 1975 when I was a 19 year old factory worker so were most of my co workers and we all were buying new cars with our new found wealth and living the single guy life. I bought a new Camaro with the 350 four barrel and four speed and posi rear end and several of my friends bought new Trans AM's in 1975 -76 and of course everyone thought they had the fastest car but my Camaro even stock was quicker off the line and held it for a quarter mile where the T/A's with 455's took a lot longer to get rolling.

Knew a guy that special ordered a '77 Can Am from the local Pontiac dealer. Took forever to get it, and was ultra-expensive for the day (thats okay - his Dad was cha-ching$). Was a beautiful car, and was traded in for a big Pontiac wagon when he started a family. It was the only Can Am I ever saw in my life, and I'm sure that guy was kicking himself for getting rid of it.

James drove the actual race cars and was told by Marlin, I believe, that he would make an excellent driver. James went on to get involved in racing and sponsor a team. On the Firebirds of the time we have to remember that our fair and just government about chocked engines to death with their anti-smog devices. Also those Birds and the Camaro's doors weighted a ton, but rust lighten all of em up within a few years. The 305 motor- biggest boat anchor of all from GM.

There are guys that have done it. On You Tube, there is a guy called the "301 Garage" or something like that. He's a fan of the 301 engine as I am. It is a very misunderstood engine. It was right for the times. I own a 400/4 speed as well as a 1980 Turbo. The 400 is more potent, but the 301 turbo when running right isn't a slouch for what it is and what was out at the time.

I'm a long time Pontiac guy but honestly I wasn't too interested in Trans Ams made in '80 and '81. Although I did own an '80 Turbo but I put a 455 in it. I also own an '81 Formula but it has long since been turned into a dirt track car and the hood was traded for a regular flat hood. I'll have to take a look and see if it has the asymmetric bracing as it was off an '80 Firebird. You learn something new every day. The Trans Am with a 455 in '75 and '76 were only available with a 4 speed. GM didn't feel the TH350 was able to handle the torque of the 455 even in it's smog form and after the floor pan was changed to accommodate the catalytic converter for the 1975 model year the TH 400 would no longer fit. But it is a fitting end to the last truly large engine in a muscle car. Pontiac paid homage by making all of the swan song 400's in '79 4 speeds as well. I've been a Trans Am fan ever since I was 12 and my dad drove up in his brand new '79 10th Anniversary 400/4 speed version. I thought it was the most beautiful car I had ever seen.

1975 and 1976 were my favorite years for the Trans Am. I liked the front fascia on those years. I also liked the steel Rally II wheels better than the alloy honeycomb style wheels. And I was never a fan of T tops on any car other than the C3 Corvette, which was actually designed for them (I own a 1976 Corvette) All other cars with T tops were originally made with a solid roof, and converted by an aftermarket company. They always leaked, and caused the car to flex a lot more. They also ruined the body lines, IMO.

Well, they weren't fast but at least they looked good. Compared to the Mustangs of the mid to late 70's, which they looked better and were faster than, anyway. And I read Steve's response to writing with a permanent marker, and I get it and It's not you, it's me. It would be an invaluable help to have the info you need at a glance with out having to hunt for it. My problem with permanently marking these out-of-print publications is rooted in the 40 or so years I spent in the map printing business as a map artist and map archivist. So basically it's my problem and as I have written before, you have the most enjoyable junk yard crawl videos on KZbin (or on the Motor Trend channel for that matter). Please keep up the good work, and Katy has got to be the nicest looking and acting junkyard dog that has ever roamed a junkyard. Don't junkyards usually have giant, mean, rabid dogs tied up just inches from where you have to walk?

That is incorrect. The late 1970s Trans Am ate late 1970s Mustangs alive and outhandled and outclassed them. The Mustang was the Mustang II through 1978 and was a joke compared to Pontiac who kept the Trans Am alive. Even with the Fox body Mustang of 1979, a 1979 Trans Am will outhandle it, eat it alive all the way around and the Trans Am was the car to have in 1979, not the Mustang. When the Mustang got fuel injection, it became a much more potent competitor. The Motorcraft and Holley carburetors used on Mustangs were absolute junk. When they went to fuel injection, it was a good thing.

I know guys that cut the back panel out of their later shakers to make them "functional". I don't know if it did any good but, they did it anyway. Personally, I've been looking for an 80-81 turbo hood for quite a while. I don't have a Turbo T/A and don't even need the whole hood. I just want the scoop for one of my square body pickup hoods because I think it would look cool. It would definitely be a change of pace from the run of the mill cowl induction hoods that so many people put on them, especially if I had the turbo bird decal on it.

I knew a guy back in the day who cut the end of the shaker out and made his own ram air,it worked, you could hear the big Quadrajet four barrel on the 403 olds engine.

this is perhaps a good example of engineering meeting the accounting department. I'm sure a bean counter figured out one hood brace stamping beat the cost of two of them (production and inventory).

I loved reviewing the performance figures for those late '70's Trans Am and the CanAm. My '77 Mustang II with the 302 V8 and 4 speed manual did 0-60 in 8.9 seconds and the quarter mile in 17 seconds. I thought the car was a slug but it was less than a half second slower than these cars. Definitely within striking distance. Of course, I had about 700 less pounds to lug around in the Mustang so I guess that helped things a bit.

I had a 79 bird I got new with a 3speed and the 231V6. The one that got away. (in blue)Even a base model drove very well. Driven hard it did need a rear sway bar.

On the Can-Am's, to me the shaker always seemed a bit small for the massive hood. Also, I think the cop cars in Smokey and the Bandit were Can-Am's and IIRC, they were sporting scoops or shakers.

So are the earlier '70s Firebird hoods braced like that??? I actually really like those X body GTOs. That '74 Ventura was a good looking car! A big nail in the Can Am's coffin was that the mold for the rear spoiler somehow got broken. It figures, because that Can Am is about the only GM A body with a rear spoiler which doesn't look totally out of place to me...

Same part from 1970 to 1976 and then different from 1977 to 1981. 1970-1976 has louvers at the back, 1977 to 1981 does not. The hood shown is a 1977-1981 style hood.

GM built the original Corvette in about six months. If they wanted the mold fixed they could have done it. I suspect it was the division rivalry that cancelled it.

I've always wondered about that hood bracing just looking cut out like that, good to know its factory. I'm very acute to my attention to details and the more I climb around and inspect my car, the more I scratch my head on certain things. It's not nessacerly brand specific either, if you inspect your vehicle I'm sure you'll find atleast one or two things that look almost like you made it or welded it yourself😄. I've noticed this on my 79 ta on where the the A arm mounts are welded to the frame😮 its roughly put together but solid, my 2002 Nissan frontier has a similar rough weld around the same area. Anyways sorry for the rant, always love and learn from these videos👍
