This video is a microcosm to me of what fishing is all about. I used to fish the mountains of NC for trout when I was in college at Western Carolina and got hooked (ahem) after being introduced to Ultralite tackle. I'm obsessed with catching small fish now on Roosters, Panther Martins, Beetle spins, etc. where I live now more towards the RDU area where there's more crappie, panfish, bass, etc. It's just so fun! I'm going to try the setup you have as well with the micro jig. Of course, catching big bass and Catfish are fun, especially when it means you have enough food to feed yourself or some family, but there's just something so primal about walking a creek or lake trail and doing what you're doing. Nothing like it.

@christianentertainmentoutdoors Жыл бұрын
I love it! You hear fishermen talk about sensitivity in a rod and why it's worth it to pay more for that sensitivity, but that little darter puts the lie to that idea. The fact that you felt that little beastie and set the hook pretty much does it for me RE expensive rods. I have no doubt that a finer made rod has lots of advantages and is very fun to fish with, but I'm not worried that my old Shakespeare Ranger poles , or the more current budget rods, lack enough sensitivity to cause me to miss anything that might be biting. If I miss it's because I'm not paying attention, not because the rod sucks.
@FishAnything Жыл бұрын
Honestly for true ultralight fishing, the line makes a bigger difference than the rod for bite detection. I would rather buy top tier line and a mid range rod than a top tier rod and mid tier line

The 7 foot light action is what shines, I choose it over other rods I own. It great cause if it breaks I’m out 17 dollars. Glad to see you tried the micro light, even if it’s for the 4.6. The 7ft light is a game changer though. Side note; a aquarium with those gobies would be insanely cool. 30 gallon long setup like a stream with looped water flow from side to side. I wish I had some in my area.
@stephenstalter24813 жыл бұрын
This is correct. I own all of them and the 7 light is the only one I would get. The 7'6" UL has gotten a lot of use this summer...but it is whippy...it will get a trout magnet way out there though.

Recognised the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) straightaway even though I live in the UK thanks to my friend in Pittsburgh sending a picture of invasive species in the Great Lakes. So was the creek you were fishing close to any of the Great Lakes? Love your videos by the way. Learnt a lot about ultralight fishing from them. Many thanks.

Yeah this creek eventually connects to Lake Michigan :) Thanks for the support!

Great Channel Bro!!. Had one of these last year, pulled in a 3lb small off my dock took a few to get it in. Super great experience on such a micro setup. Sadly broke it on a snag that I thought was a fish

Thank you Fred! Yeah it is a solid little rod for the price :) sorry to hear you broke yours :(

I've actually been using this one for awhile now and I've caught some pretty sizable fish in lakes with it. I originally bought it to be my, "I'm in the mood to fish. Rod and such are in the car. Let's go" sort of set up. But in time it has become my favorite to use, especially after I caught an 11 inch big mouth bass that was on the heavy side, and a 13 inch rainbow trout. I've now been bit by that ultralight bug and I'm ok with this :P

What was the technique there at the beginning? Basically a float and fly? Were you using the float to drag the little bug on a jig head? Pretty neat idea for the creek.
@FishAnything3 жыл бұрын
Yeah just a little float rig! One of my absolute favorites for ultralight fishing of all types but especially in current. Show off the rig here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4m8fYZ9bc-jq9k

@@FishAnything Sweet. awesome stuff. I like the swivel idea to salvage the bobber. If you were to run a traditional fly on it, how deep do you typically keep it off the bottom? I'm going to try this when the water starts to get cold this year.

Most of my gear is Shakespeare (including a 20+ year old 4'8" Ugly Stik). So far I've only had 1 reel fail (bad bearing). Can't beat the price and availability for recreational fishing.

Darn right Brad! Glad to hear you’ve had historic success with their equipment. I have a ton of respect for brands like shakespeare.

The UL rod I bought was around the same price. I got a Berkley Cherrywood and have the reel from my Shakespeare Dock Runner on it (replacing that). Honestly I wish the Dock Runner was an UL and not the medium that it is. But the Cherrywood is holding up fine so far, I've caught probably 30 fish on it in the few days I've had it. Biggest fish on it so far is a 7 or so inch red ear sunfish. Now that I'm addicted to ultralight fishing I want to get a few different combos for different things.

Out of the series of this rod the 5'6" two piece of this always seem to break in the same place. I believe it has to do with where the end comes together is too short & creates a high stress point. I've seen about 3-5 break all in the same place including the one I own did the same thing.
@FishAnything9 ай бұрын
Wow! You should probably send them an email and let them know. Might be a quality issue for that specific length and dictate further testing by their company.

@@FishAnything There is an updated model out it's black instead of grey. The eyelets a positioned different & no longer stress the same spot as the older model. I have both now.

using one of these as a budget angler, and it is GREAT. i use it for micro fishing in the creeks and ponds around me... ive caught some pretty decent bass on it too! i think the biggest one was a 2lber, and man did it fight well on the rod. currently have mine paired up with a cheap spinning reel but im looking to upgrade to a shimano sienna or a pfluger in the near future. couldnt ask for more, since i got mine for ~11$ at walmart.

I’ve had this exact 4’6 version for 3 or 4 years now. used it for trout, all types of bass, perch, and even channel cats and carp. It’s a really good rod for the money and has even outlasted a couple reels I’ve had on it.

Love to hear it! It’s funny… some folks tell me this story and others say it broke the first trip. I feel like there are “lemons” in the mix, but most of these rods are really awesome sticks. Glad you got a good one!
