I love how you instantly responded to the video, and interpreted it a few different ways. This video for "Stay" is an absolute masterpiece in the way it reinterprets the song, and gives the singers opposite characters. Great reaction!

This was number one in the UK for 8 weeks, surprised you don’t know it. The First Lady is Marcella Detroit who worked with Eric Clapton back in the 70s and the other lady is Siobhan Fahey, former member of Bananarama.

I'd definitely heard the chorus before but the rest was a delightful mystery to me 🙂. Thanks for giving me the info of the singers

This was a MASSIVE hit in Europe and the UK during the early 90's. The video was played at all hours of the day and night on UK TV along with Freddie Mercury's "Living On My Own" dance remix. I was living in England in the early 90's and this song is strongly associated with my time there. Love it!

I have this album, really like 'I Don't Care ' and 'My 16th Apology.' Once i figured out how to pronounce Siobhan, I loved that name, and had a crush on her. A couple years ago, i saw a clip of Marcella on 'Pop Star to Opera Star' and she was amazing!

No, she is portraying the Reaper, Death. Banshees don't come and claim people's souls. Ffs, what is it with Irish people that always think anyone with an Irish name lives, breathes, eats, drinks and sleeps Ireland? If Siobhan WAS an Irish banshee (whatever that is) she'd be coming to put him in a Magdalene laundry to be beaten and abused by nuns and river dance for all eternity lol.

After decades of knowing this song, another reactor who said he has suffered depression for years recently made an interesting observation about this song that made me think again - that it could be about, not just someone coming back from the brink of death in general, but about bringing back a person who has made a suicide attempt and giving them hope for the future. I notice you picked that possibility up too. The part that certainly makes me think that interpretation is more accurate, is the fact that Marcella Detroit (the initial singer) is encouraging the man to focus on her exclusively - which would fit if she is effectively saying "block out everything else and only think of me" to bring him back. And the start when she talks of him "thinking of escape" from the world, and "if you try to go alone, don't think I'll understand". Also, lines ilke "the darkness of your dreams" and "when your pride is on the floor". Then when "Death" arrives, she talks about "when you sleep at night they don't hear your cries in your own world" and of "breaking the spell" back in your own world - depression? Dark thoughts, perhaps? Whatever interpretation you're most convinced by, this is definitely a beautiful, powerful and timeless song. This was a huge hit in the UK, topping the charts for eight weeks between February and April in 1992. Shakespears Sister - Marcella Detroit and Siobhan Fahey - split acrimoniously after this hit and didn't talk for 25 years, but have reconciled and have continued to make more material on and off since 2018. You should also check out their other tracks "You're History", "Goodbye Cruel World", "I Don't Care" and "Hello (Turn Your Radio On)". As for finding Siobhan Fahey attractive - abso-freaking-lutely! She was - and is - gorgeous! Here's an interview with her on TV-AM around the time this was a hit: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4TYqIJ8htCHmZY

Brilliant, insightful comment, eloquently put! I love music that brings layers, and thought provoking discussion. I think the suicidal aspect could be on point. I think the video certainly helps trying to provide some clarity there as best as it can artistically. Shame the band split for such a long spell! Crazy they did that at what you could call the peak of their powers! And yeah siobhan really hit those beauty notes for me in this one! 😍. Thanks for the link

Marcella Detroit took part in a British programme called Pop Star To Opera Star. She was sensational but came 2nd which, in my opinion, was completely wrong. I think it had to do with her not being being from the UK (she's American). Prejudice can hit everywhere

The second character is Death coming for him, whilst the first character is his love and his anchor to the real world. Now Death can take many forms...and can even be attractive to some, those with depression, in a lot of pain etc. In this case as attractive as Death appears to be for this man, love wins out in this situation. The eye roll Death gives at the end, however, says it all. "Okay, you've pulled him back from the brink...but I'll eventually take both of your souls." Death always wins in the end.
