Shakespeare's sister were criminally underrated in their time - no-one else sounded like them, even back then, and I still don't think anyone has since. (Fun fact about Siobhan in this video: she didn't get to shoot her part of the video until many hours later, and so she passed the time drinking wine... a LOT of wine. Hence her crazy performance - she looks drunk in this video because she actually WAS!) Others of theirs I can recommend: 'Hello (Turn Your Radio On,)' 'You're History,' 'I Don't Care...'

“Only time will tell if you can break the spell back in your own world.” That line feels like someone battling addiction or depression. This song hits so different listening to it now as an adult.

What you have to remember is that she is death and that the other woman is fighting for her soulmate’s life who is trapped between life and death Which is the spell that she has to break

There's a ton of symbolism in this song -- addition, death, life, good, evil. The song by itself is cool, but this video take it to another level. Siobhan's 'angel of death' character is perfect for her voice as is Marcella's caretaker with the angelic high range. Addiction could definitely be a symbol for this because it's also a good vs.evil thing for many people.

Fun fact - The shoot for this video took way longer than expected, and everybody was getting bored, so Siobhan (the second female performer) went for a wander within the town, found a bar and got absolutely smashed on vodka. When she showed up to do her part she could barely stand up, but they went with it and the result was brilliantly and hilariously over the top.

Marcella worked with Eric Clapton in the 70s and co-wrote “Lay Down Sally”. Also, “Stay” was huge in the UK STAYing 😁 at no.1 for 8 weeks!

I've rediscovered this song the past few days and so have watched MANY reactions to it. Yours is probably the best reaction to this song I've seen and the best analysis of the clip and lyrics. Many other people reacting don't seem to have a clue. Both singers have such contrasting voices and presences that really make this work. For a long time I thought this was about someone not wanting to lose their lover, and fighting off death that comes knocking... ...but some of the lyrics make her sound rather creepy, possessive or even narcissistic.... ...then I took it a step further and now think that Detroit represents addiction. If I re-listen with that in mind then all the lyrics take on a completely new meaning.... especially "When your pride is on the floor, I'll make you beg for more".... In this light, her lyrics are much more horrifying than they seem on the surface, even more so than those of Fahey/Death.

Siobhan had to wait around a long time to film her parts so was drinking through the day to kill the time as she was so bored & by the time they filmed her sections she was totally smashed - hence the wildly over the top performance ! 😂

Wow this is a great, both heartfelt and competent analysis of the song and the video, and I'm very glad you were so enthralled -as I was- by Siobhan facial mimics and overall proxemics, she's just a huge presence in this video, drunk or not - I mean, most of us are not quite the sight when wasted, whereas she is still captivating af. Again, congratulations, this is a solid subscribe.

I love how Siobhan's part is both the Evil Queen who's running the women on the moon but it also could be the voice of depression wanting to keep you down.

Oddly enough Siobhan is the better known of the two from Bananarama, but Marcella has the more credible pedigree. She was part of Eric Clapton's band in the 70s (under her real name, Marcy Levy) and she co-wrote and sang either duet or backup on several of his bigger hits such as Promise, The Core, and Lay Down Sally. Bananarama was more of a lightweight dance/pop band, and as much as I like them they weren't musical prodigies or prolific singer/songwriters like Marcella.

That would be horrible. The contrast makes the song. The good thing is, you personally can shut it off before that part comes in. I wouldn't.
