I hear you there. I can see where your statement could get misunderstood. But he is underrated. Bob Dylan holds the title for poet/lyricist. You rarely hear John praised for his lyrical skills. A lot of his songs just blow me away.

Met Shakey once or twice years back and he was always such a nice dude! Shakey if you ever read this, I caught your show at the basement in Columbus OH and it was legendary!!! I forget which big-time band was playing upstairs at the bigger venue, but you literally had people running from upstairs to cram down into that tiny little cave of a venue! People piled in like sardines as you belted Late July!! One of the wildest live shows I’ve ever been to bro, you absolutely are a master of your craft!

That being said, It looks like he's played a few different versions the the creators, but they spliced in clips from all the versions. The capo jumps around and in some areas he's playing completely different parts of the song and even singing different parts (maybe a different song lol). But the audio is definitely capod on 4th.

@santacruzman Жыл бұрын
Whoa. Pretty shaky version of Prine's classic. What's with the melody change? I can understand a few note changes to spice up a re-telling, but this is some other song. And then there's the wandering capo (wtf). Then he laughs (breaks character) singing the third verse. Was that due to the pretentious narration, or singing "earth's" instead of "world's"? Finally, why the hell didn't he play that suitcase?
@kazzerere5 ай бұрын
Is no bad thing to do your own take on a song I love this version, I think it’s great
@santacruzman5 ай бұрын
@@kazzerere Yeah, I agree. In fact some artists will alter a note here and there with their own songs after a while, this makes the performance a little less routine to the artist. But this is really quite a change to the melody - to the point that you must ask yourself as an artist - why am i even performing this song if my take requires such a change. Personally I think it's kind of a silly take on Prine's work, because it's not really Prine's work. I'm glad you enjoy this version. I'm not sure this is something Mr. Graves is proud of. You do understand that the video is mostly irrelevant to the audio? Pay attention to the capo position as it changes with no audio change. The simple truth is, this cat don't _know_ this song enough to even get the lyrics all right. Thing is, neither does the bulk of his audience.

I don't get it, the song becomes famous because it is sung in a certain way. This guy takes the same words, puts them to a different tune? It might be great for some folks, but i like the sound of the original (and the thousands of similar versions) and while this tune might appeal to some... not me.
