Oh thank goodness Princess Shaki is feeling better! You can tell by her eyes that she has much more energy. It's so difficult when our fur babies don't feel good because they can't talk to us and it's scary. Jamil you did such a good job realizing something was wrong with her a d getting her to the vet right away. I've been doing a lot of reading about female Macaque monkeys and how they go through this, Baboons do as well. Sometimes their bum swells just a little bit and other times it can get very large and look like they are wounded. Unfortunately it's just their nature and there's nothing you can do about it but wait. Shaki does suck a good job taking her medicine! But Shaki "don't angry to dog!". Big hugs to you and your family Jamil!!

I know this comment is late, but when I give my dog medicine I like to pretend it is really yummy food so they get tricked into thinking they want it (like when they beg us for our food!) 😂 I say “ohhhh look at this!! This looks yummyyyyy!!!” Then I shake it a few times like it’s treats and they’ll do anything for it! 😁

Shaki is eating dirt because she is not getting enough of the vitamins and minerals her monkey body needs from her very humanized diet. I know how much effort you put into their meals Jamil, I see the multitude of healthy and delicious dishes made with quality ingredients you provide to them. Lucky Shaki and JK eat like that everyday. Healthy for people does not mean healthy for Macaques. Obstetricians will have patients come to them horrified that they are craving potting soil or dirt. One patient told me the potting soil looked and smelled so good to her that she just grabbed a spoon and dug-in. She had a 2nd spoonful before her sister stopped by and made her come in thinking something psychological was wrong with her instead of just a vitamin deficiency. I think the same thing is happening with Shaki. She loves to eat salted fish and Prawns, but would rarely if ever get even the prawns in the wild. She needs to eat more things grown in dirt (like root vegetables, kale and spinach) that have those naturally. Don't peel their veggies, just rinse. They will get way more nutrition. Offer lots of fresh veggies before the meal and leave items like pasta as a treat or dessert instead of main course. Macaques as you know are at risk to develop diabetes when they consume a higher carbohydrate and lower fiber diet. Feel free to message me if you have any questions regarding this. @@monalebon8016in the 1940's & 50's we were trying to save time and labor. Frozen T.V. dinners, pot pies, were all the rage. But as you know, they lack the texture and taste of homemade. They are very processed , and although adequate for most species, it lacks the variety that most primates and apes are used to. An adult gorilla eats 40 lbs of fresh produce (leaves, stems, roots,flowers, fruit and veggies) every day. They forage for hours to do so. I would be extremely bored if I was fed monkey chow. And I'm a primate. Mazuri makes a very good primate blend. I would still supplement with fresh veggies fruits and leaves. Shaki is most likely craving dirt from a mineral deficiency. Without seeing blood work I can't be positive but I would tend to believe that.
