Hi all,
Hope you enjoy this video, it has taken a lot of editing but I wanted to get as much info included as possible.
As described in the video I will never forget all the service men and women who defended our country, home or abroad. It’s easy to forget how hard it must of been but also standing side by side in solidarity and in defence for our freedoms.
Thank you for watching

Hello Carl, thank you very much for your message - it is good to read that people are and think very much alike. It is important to have personal contact with many different people. This is the only way to get closer and get along better. In the last 30 years we have traveled all over Europe by car - we found friendship everywhere. We particularly enjoy traveling to Great Britain. In total we were allowed to spend about a year there. England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland / Ireland were our destinations. The south of England is very dear to us - in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and, most recently, Sussex - we felt particularly at home here. We also adore the royal family - the death of Prince Phillip makes us dead too. Especially when we think of HM THE Queen. I always write to her on her birthdays or anniversaries - her letters of thanks always make me proud. Thank you again and I wish you a nice day, Greetings Konrad / Düsseldorf

@@rabbastern that’s so good to hear you love to visit our green and pleasant land. I hope you get to visit again soon 😊 It’s sad to hear about Prince Phillip but at least the Queen is still here. Have a great week my friend and be well. Carl Devon

being a local and born in shaldon i played in all those building and more. opposite the genarator building in the corner of the woods was a huge building with a huge slot in the front for some sort of big gun with anti air on the top. it was knocked a while ago by the people who owned the house behind. also on the top of the ness cliff was a pill box that fell over the cliff years ago. the grass bank below the ness house hotel as kids used to dig into and find loads of spent ammo. in one of the houses behind shaldon park they still have a air raid shelter made with concrete rings you can see it from the road. sometimes during hot weather when the grass has dried right out on shaldon green you can see the outline of the air raid shelter. there used to be a 2 landing craft on the beach which we would play in up pass ringmore they where removed years ago. great place to grow up loads of adventure. oh the rusty wheel you are looking at was for the sewage. when the tide started to go out a man from the water board would come and open that and let the sewage go out with the tide.

That’s some great info and you sound like you had a lot fun growing up in the area. My fathers side where all Teignmouth and Dawlish lads. All the story’s and antics of the things that are now long gone are both funny and sad. Thank you for sharing that with me 😊👍

Nice one fella 👍 As a kid me and my mates used to play in the many Pill Boxes, Coastal Lookouts and old Nissan Huts left over from WWII. Many still stand as a solitary lookout over the coast for enemy aircraft, ships, submarines or an invasion force that thankfully never came. My old Gran can remember all the barb wire, tank traps and mines on the beaches at Torquay. She was so happy to go down to the sea for a swim after the war ended and the beaches were made safe. The effort made to defend this Isle was colossal...and it worked. Thanks again, very interesting...👌

Thank you 😊 I enjoyed making this video as I was there for some time and the things you see. It transports you back in time and as you said the collosal manpower to keep us safe. Hehe your gran sounded cool old school! Swimming the riviera after the end of the war. So many sentinels still stand today and as a reminder of a time that hopfully we will never see again. Cheers 😊

@@-NewtonPiper- Gran was moved from Dartmouth to Torquay as the family house was requisitioned for the war effort as barracks for officers. She returned to Dartmouth in 1947. Her greatest memory was seeing the DDay forces set off from South Devon to there rendezvous points before going across the channel to Normandy. She new a little secret beach that hadn’t been mined and took her wartime dips there 🤫

Bravo my friend...it’s easy to forget the huge effort put into defending the nation in WW2. You show great locations ...really interesting. My mother often visited Redcar 0n NE coast in the war where she had relatives. They went ballroom dancing in the evenings and she said dozens of anti aircraft guns were positioned all along the front. There were always bombing raids going off as the Germans tried to bomb our heavy industry down the River Tees. She said it was really scary cos the guns were firing and they had to run and take cover in the shelters.

I can’t even begin to imagine how scary that must of been, made of stout stuff that what I say. I sometimes think I was born in the wrong era. With such history we have all been touched by it even new generations who have no clue about the sacrifice made by our forbears. Your mum sounded like a real lovely lady John. 😊

Fantastic Carl. There is very little WWII infrastructure in Shropshire (other than airfields) as we are such a rural inland area. You still see a few pillboxes about and there was a POW camp locally but not much. Devon is such a beautiful part of the world, and the coastal area holds an awful lot of history 😊👍🏻

Some of those old defence buildings look very strongly built, probably a lot cheaper to leave them rather than try to demolish them. My Father, an Army Lieutenant had similar responsibilities guarding Ramsgate.

Nice one Carl! Just shows how desperate times were when they were breaking out 1917 guns! Those rocket defences were not hugely successful - if they are the ones I’m thinking about, they trailed a wire after them that was supposed to bring enemy aircraft down by entanglement almost. Salvos went up in the path of approaching planes and the wires buggered them up. Supposedly!

Oh my 😅 well I loved the name the troops gave them ‘uncle percey’s’ (UP)s or Unrotated projectiles. It was these old guns and the like they used as I suppose all the new or main artillery where being used further east or abroad. Make do and mend I think was the motto haha. So glad you like the video

Request for future videos - the St Anthony Battery and RAF Davidstowe Moor! Currently googling stuff I would like to see down your neck of the woods! 😂 Some good looking coastal defence sites down there. Now wishing I had taken some video of a beach I was on in November that’s had really well preserved artillery emplacements at either end and big concrete tank blocks all along the upper fringe of the beach.
