On Saturday, the 26th of November, the ship Clarity headed to Teignmouth Harbour. The pilot was helping the ship in front of Clarity, but the captain got impatient and decided to bring her in without the pilot. It didn't go well.

If you notice the way the moored boats moved it could have been the result of 'Canal Effect' where large boats in shallow water create a suction effect towards them caused by a pressure difference under their hulls.

What on earth was the ship's captain thinking? He would have known the use of a pilot is mandatory in this port I wondered why the blue ketch had disappeared, I do hope it wasn't damaged.
@starfishsystems
@starfishsystems Жыл бұрын
The ketch appears to have pretty much kept station, apart from an initial small surge forward which was likely caused by the bow wave off the ship rather than hard contact. If there had been contact, I expect that it would happen a moment later, in which case we would see the mastheads abruptly dipping as the ketch was forced over, its topsides being the first point of contact and its keel resisting laterally. Then it would roll back and its masts would probably strike the ship. That would have been heartbreaking, but as the ship backs out the ketch seems to emerge intact, nothing damaged aloft. I'll have another look on a bigger display, but that's how it seems on my phone anyway.

The port will have rules and regulations for piloting and will be compulsory to take a pilot over a certain size.. I’m sure they would be needed for this vessel so I recon a pilot would have been onboard despite not showing the pilot flag. She’s obviously had a problem because she should be going to port to follow the main channel but carries on ahead and into the boats.

In my country any big ship must reduce speed when they enter our waters (20 mile) and must wait until a local pilot has arrived to guide them into our busy harbors. They usually drop anchor at the 5 mile marker if a pilot is not available, because they are very busy or the harbors is closed due to dangerous swells (30+ feet ).

I guess he might have had a failure of the bow thruster motor. These are usually powered by a separate motor or motor generator set in the bow. It’s possible it failed to start. Trying to turn a ship with just its rudder in a confined space would be very difficult…and particularly so in this case if the tidal flow was creating a bit of a current.

If u read the description of video properly u understand the captain got cocky ignoring the pilots advice because of captain arrogant attitude why ship ploughed into moored boats. These ships are normally seen into Teignmouth by the Pilot boat sailing in front and through the main channel. For some reason this ship decided to go it alone and went well off the normal channel - we don't know why he didn't wait for the Pilot like all other large ships. Ships come through here every day with no such issues and come no where neat the small boat which are always safely moored there. A lack of clarity for sure.

Was thinking that as well! About car parkers that is. One day years ago I saw a woman (who should never have had a license) make a mess out of 3 cars: hers and 2 others. She backed up into a car with her right rear fender, pulled back up and hit another with her left front fender, pulled back and finally got into driving space. After that I got in our car, which thankfully was far away from her. My dad said "Did you see that?". I said, "Yeah. How can somebody do that?". We don't know if she just left or if she left her information with someone or as a message under a wiper.
