This film directed by Krishna Shah was based on a novel titled "Shalimar". It vanished without a trace after it was released. I used to wear half-pants those days when going to school. Now let me give my most honest, sincere comments unmindful of whether readers like or dislike my comments. These are my personal opinion about this film. So here goes :--- 1.) The story, idea, concept was simply outstanding, fantastic and out of the routine crime tales of those days ( 1978). This film, if properly made could have been a deadly thriller. 2.) The director /novelist Krishna Shah could not give it a crisp, nerve-biting, edge of the seat thriller touch. A feel of suspense is totally lacking throughout. 3.) The principal actors Rex Harrison and Dharmendra (playing Sir John and Kumar respectively) were at loggerheads throughout the shooting of the film. Rex was irritated by Dharmendra's English dialogues with his typical Punjabi accent. So on sets, Rex hurled abuses at Dharmendra complaining to director Krishna Shah time and again that kept adding to Dharmendra's irritation. But outwardly, both Rex Harrison & Dharmendra were decent, diplomatic to each other throughout the making of the film. 4.) My advice is Shalimar should be remade in modern times with adding elements of suspense, thrills and better direction. 5.) However, all the actors did act very well. Rex Harrison was so miffed that he vowed never to work in any Indian film hereafter. 6.) This was an Indo-American starcast assemble. For those who are not familiar, the actors include Rex Harrison (My Fair Lady fame) playing Sir John, John Saxon ( Enter the Dragon fame) playing Columbo, O.P. Ralhan (Hulchul 1968 film fame) playing Romeo, Dharmendra (Sholay fame) playing Kumar and Zeenat Aman (Don fame) playing Sheila. 7.) My view is :-- Do watch the film. This has the ingredients of a great thriller. But see how inefficient handling of the direction part made it a flop. It will teach a film maker how not to ruin a great story with prospects of being a suspense crime/heist thriller that can end up as a great flop. 8.) This was one of the most costliest venture of 1978 and when released failed to earn even half of the entire cost. Poor chap Krishna Shah.

Good, honest review sir, didn't know about the conflicts between Rex and Dharm in the sets. Most thrill and story-history remained in dialogues, especially the past success of each of the Conners, which could've come out in scenes and how Kumar outwitted John and overcome some of their individual weakness. Also, Kumar's surprise use of chess-board dress, how did he know that chess played a key role and his did he arrange that dress in particular, who helped? It's silly to imagine that he 'knew-all' before he ventured. Also the many dance sequences with the tribals, were to some extent distracting, when the thrill of the story was trying to catch attention. Hmm...

Here u are wrong, this movie is based on James headly chase novel vulture is the patient bird. It is great movie even though people don't like it. Nowadays when animal kind of movie which doesn't have any moral are getting hit darza. People mind is a worthless shit nowadays.

Indian directors always fail due to their narrow thinking and maturity, this film was expected to be an international achievement. And keeping the Indian audience in mind, some lightness was kept, due to which you will see many mistakes in this film, if this movie is remade today, then the present day Bollywood's debauched, drug-addicted, corrupt directors and nepotism will together make a mockery of this great masterpiece. To make this film, a passionate and crazy person is needed who has the ability to live life on his own terms, and the artist is needed who is a true and fearless artist, in today's selfish and money-driven world, it is difficult to find such honest and dedicated artists.
