As soon as I discovered the release of Cinematic Studio Woodwinds, I wondered who might review it first. I checked Thinkspace Education, Sample Library review, etc. I should have known to check Cory first. I think you are my favorite sample library reviewer. As many have said, you give the sample sounds ample time for listeners to experience it as though we are playing it ourselves. As a composer, I'm confident in my skills. With that in mind, I very much enjoy your performances included in your review videos. You caught my attention during your review of Cinematic Studio Strings. The first piece you included is well-crafted and moving. Thanks for this prompt review CSW. It's the library I've been anticipating for quite some time.

That direct callout to Spitfire was shocking, but exactly what I was thinking. I had it in my head for years that their woodwinds were the best out there, and I guess maybe that was true. This is indeed a great product for a great price. What I particularly love about it is that the performances aren't overly excited and the vibrato isn't exaggerated. Is it even too subtle for exposed lines? I believe the demo on my channel shows that it is, in fact, just perfect. It allows you to keep enjoying the sound of the instruments over the course of a full piece featuring woodwinds. A more romantic vibrato would be too much after a while. Writing that demo was such pure joy that CSW will from now on be my go-to woodwind library.

The legato on this is sick! Shame most companies still insist on having separate patches for staccato and legato instead of taking the Sample Modeling approach, because otherwise these sound amazing. However, they sound awfully wet, even tho the reverb seems to be on zero. I guess it is cuz you are using the mix mic. I might wait for a sale and then get these. Do they work with a breath controller?

I never thought I'd live to see the day. I think I'm gonna cry P.S. If the marcato articulation can make sufficient staccatos and slurs at the same time, does that kinda defeat the purpose of the first two articulations? I don't seem to understand the supposed nuance
@CoryPelizzari3 жыл бұрын
The marcato mode only offers fast slurs so it can't be used for expressive passages. It only uses the tongued staccatissimos as well, while the shorts have 4 different lengths.

@Nicdehouwer3 жыл бұрын
That's twice I see you struggle with your video software Cory. Why not just go for Davinci Resolve? It's insanely reliable and fast, and offers all the features you need. Even for the free version. I would recommend the paid version, which is also only 300€ for lifelong support and upgrades.
@CoryPelizzari3 жыл бұрын
@@Nicdehouwer I honestly think it's my graphics card - or lack thereof - I have integrated graphics so the videos render at 2.5x realtime, which is painful to type let alone work with.
@Nicdehouwer3 жыл бұрын
@@CoryPelizzari oh! I'd think you, as a composer with many heavy, high performance libraries, would have a NASA-type rig overall :D It might definitely be that your integrated graphics slows down rendering, but video editing software should never render mistakes, the software itself should be reliable. So drop Movie Studio, DR is very straightforward, you'll be up to speed within a couple of hours. Plus, your reviews are mostly just a vocal track playing within your DAW, no?
@CoryPelizzari3 жыл бұрын
@@Nicdehouwer I record the vocals, then load in all the instruments and play all the parts. If the instruments take up too much memory (some patches eat up memory even if they don't load much into RAM) I have to record everything being played back in my DAW in multiple parts, rendering the audio in my DAW as I go along. Then at the end what I have is a bunch of silent video clips and a bunch of WAVs that I drop into the video editor and line up. I made a video about how I make my videos a while back. It's rather amusing.
@Nicdehouwer3 жыл бұрын
@@CoryPelizzari what I meant was "there isn't much fast and complex editing to be done on your reviews" :) By which I meant: "if you were to swap editing software, you'd have little issues adapting to new features and controls". Might be a solution if the renders cause you stress, that's all :)

@@TiagoNugentComposer I think I know what it is - on closer inspection I was listening to the marcato articulation, thinking it was the legatos.
