Utterly beautiful and moving! I was born on St. Lucy’s Day, here in the U.S. Whenever I tell a Swedish or Swedish-American friend my birth date they always break out into a big, happy smile. It’s nice that an Italian-American like me is connected, albeit in a small way, with such a lovely tradition as this.

This so beautiful!!! Growing up in the northern part of Minnesota and Wisconsin, USA, our Luthern church still celebrated St. Lucia day. I now live in the southern part of the United States. I haven't found a church down here that keeps this glorious celebration. Don't ever let this die out in Sweden.

Yes, culture. Even if its origins are in Italy, it's part of Christianity, and the past 1000 years Christianity has shaped Sweden. So it is part of Swedish culture wether you like it or not. Sweden also celebrates the Winter Solstice at the same day, they've been merged into one. So our Lucia is not the same as your Italian though it has the same origins. Culture spreads and each country makes it into their own. That's how it works in the world. But who cares? We're all Christian Europeans my friend
@Felix-fm3tu5 жыл бұрын
@You’re Late! No it's both. Our celebration of the Winter Solstice and Lucia was merged into the same thing. It had to be that way for the ancient Swedes to easier accept Christianity. Since it was forced in the beginning from Christian authorities.

In Waldorf education, which just celebrated its 100th year anniversary, schools around the world still celebrate the tradition, even to the lit candles on the wreath worn by a girl in the class. They also offered the traditional Lucia buns: I was one of the parents one year making many, many buns for the parents in the school who came to watch. (Well, I should say that at least in a New York Waldorf school in the 90's they still had the celebration down to the lit candle wreath. Hopefully, still!)

Why would 68 persons press tombs down (dislike) on such a beautiful video? If they searched for Lucia video in the first place, how could they possible be disappointed? I love this video ans other videos like this one, I cry my eyes wet, because I feel so touched by the visual and vocal beauty Lucia videos has. The mood is divine, it feels like Heaven suddenly is closer. There's a sadness to this beauty, thinking of Lucia's fate, and the tears we may cry is good tears, indeed. She became a saint. May she sing in Heaven still. God bless everyone! And in advance Merry Christmas!

Actually many of us don´t care about any God or not, but I think we for thousands of years have celebrated the turning of the mid winter darkness with a party full of light and song. This is a sun glorification from the beginning, which make sense, and no religion has been able to take that away.
@lunsen4026 жыл бұрын
you do realise that almost every christmas tradition from santa clouse to the tree has pagan traditions right? and yes we´d had the country called sweden without the chatolics, we had kings of sweden hundreds of years before the church recognisesd sweden to be a thing, please learn history before speaking like a idiot you damn arse. it is true that lucia is a christian saint that is celebrated in among other places sweden but thats one of the few genuinly christian traditions, that by the way mind you are celebrated extreamly diffrently in diffrent places you ingnorant moron. also if you think insperational music is under monopoly of the church i question you´re intelegance.... also in sweden the lucia celebration is a combination between christian traditions and pre-christan traditions so fuck you....

Well! Never talk to American religious idiots! And Americans religious idiots keep away from sweden! Otherwise machine gun is ready! Sweden is very secular and the lucia day in sweden has also pagan roots! Well, another example. Christmas is popular in japan, but japan is not Christian country. And chinese new year. “Year” is a monster from chinese mythology, celebrating new year means expel “year “ monster. But no body believes the mythology, but people still celebrate the chinese new year. They are all for culture reasons.

The real moron are religious idiots. Stay in your usa! And never go to Western Europe! We have nothing in common. By the way, cross symol and church buildings are everywhere in germany. But they are for culture and heritage reason! And unfortunately germany’s most religious state bayern (bavaria) passed law for put cross symbol in government buildings; but it is for bayern culture and heritage identity. Though I can't speak about your accent but consider pronuncing(spelling) it just as the alphabet but remember the short and long letters, they're extremely important. Consider yourself a pro at swedish pronunciation when you can hear the difference at "tomten(santa) and" tomten(lot) or in maybe even glass (ice cream) and glas (glass)! :)

meh, doesnt matter if its a guy or girl. in the beginning it was only guys, since it was a univeristy tradition (and women didnt study...) it wasnt until the late 20's a newspaper started having beauty contests with girls. then only tall, blonde women would be picked because of the arian view etc. (yeah, sweden were really racist). nowadays we dont really care. racists still care obv, they want it to be like it was during ww2 or something lol.

When we did one of these in my choir, i purposely decided to be a tern (usually the girls who wear glitter, a red band and hold a light) instead of a star boy (usually boys who wear a cone and hold a star thingy) to break the gender norms and everybody was fine with it too so that's no problem.

Much of these celebrations have their roots in pagan times. Before Lucia it was called 'Stora Lusse'. Probably from 'Stora ljuse', Old norse 'Gróta liós' "Great light". From beginning a lightwake on the longest night. But since Västergötland, where tradition is strongest, had much contact with Kyiv-Rus in the 11th to 13th c, it is very likely that they borrowed a lot from Kolada-celebrations in medieval Ukraine and Russia...
