Was Muhammad SAAW a sinner? These verses fall under the category regarding the subject that we may call verses indicating humility and modesty. One of the morals taught to mankind by Islam is however devoted and sincere someone may be concerning worshipping Allah SWT, he or she must display a total lack of vanity. Allahumma ighfirli khatayaya wa 'amdi, wa jahli wa jiddi, wa kullu dhalika'indi. Allahumma ighrifli ma qaddamtu wa ma akhartu wa ma asrartu wa ma a'lantu. In Islam, a Muslim doesn’t seek forgiveness for his sins only when he transgresses against Allah SWT. He is supposed to perform this act every time, regardless of the situation. Furthermore, there is a narration which says the following: Narrated Al-Mughira: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to stand (in the prayer) or pray till both his feet or legs swelled. He was asked why (he offered such an unbearable prayer) and he said, "should I not be a thankful slave." حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مِسْعَرٌ، عَنْ زِيَادٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْمُغِيرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ يَقُولُ إِنْ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم لَيَقُومُ لِيُصَلِّيَ حَتَّى تَرِمُ قَدَمَاهُ أَوْ سَاقَاهُ، فَيُقَالُ لَهُ فَيَقُولُ ‏ "‏ أَفَلاَ أَكُونُ عَبْدًا شَكُورًا ‏"‏‏.‏ Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 1130 In-book reference : Book 19, Hadith 10 USC-MSA web (English) reference : Vol. 2, Book 21, Hadith 230 (deprecated numbering scheme This Hadith provides us with the answer. Even though the Prophet SAAW was the greatest person to ever live, he still didn’t take this prerogative and slack off. He worshipped Allah till his body started to break apart. This is a token of his modesty. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: "By Allah, I seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him more than seventy times a day." [Al-Bukhari]. وعن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال‏:‏ سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول‏:‏ ‏ "‏والله إني لأستغفر الله وأتوب إليه في اليوم أكثر من سبعين مرة ‏"‏ ‏(‏‏(‏رواه البخاري‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏ Arabic/English book reference : Book 1, Hadith 13 Report Error | Share So here we see the Prophet SAAW asking forgiveness from Allah for his sins for no reason at all. This shows that istighfar is not only incumbent upon an individual if he or she sins. In fact, in another narration the Prophet SAAW says..... Abu Bakr narrated: That the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “He who seeks forgiveness has not been persistent in sin, even if he does it seventy times in a day.” حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْكُوفِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَحْيَى الْحِمَّانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ وَاقِدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي نُصَيْرَةَ، عَنْ مَوْلًى، لأَبِي بَكْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ مَا أَصَرَّ مَنِ اسْتَغْفَرَ وَلَوْ فَعَلَهُ فِي الْيَوْمِ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ إِنَّمَا نَعْرِفُهُ مِنْ حَدِيثِ أَبِي نُصَيْرَةَ وَلَيْسَ إِسْنَادُهُ بِالْقَوِيِّ ‏.‏ Grade : Hasan (Darussalam) Reference : Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3559 In-book reference : Book 48, Hadith 190 English translation : Vol. 6, Book 46, Hadith 3559 Report Error | Share Case closed!
