Re-watched Mulan yesterday and noticed the following: 1. Shan Yu EXCLUSIVELY makes dramatic appearances. He doesn't just walk into scene. There's flair in every appearance. 2. Shan Yu is THE LEAST SEXIST MAN in Mulan. He doesn't make remarks at all about Mulan's gender, never belittles her. He immediately recognizes her as a soldier, and she gets treated as such. He's very much an equal-oportunity conqueror. 3. Shan Yu is a great leader. He respects his lieutenants and involves them in the decision making process. He takes all their input and focuses it into a singular vision. 4. GODDAMN I love every second this man is on screen (this I knew) All in all 10/10 man. Top husband material.

@@DarkMegaPlague I don't think the dude was 100% human. He's got characteristics and traits that no ordinary human would have. Sharp claws, sharp teeth, black and yellow eyes. Also he was strong enough to smash through a heavy wooden door with his bare fist, survived an avalanche, he was able to just easily sense two scouts hiding nearby right while he was in the middle of riding his horse and there's a deleted concept of him having the power to see through his falcon's eyes. I swear he's some half human half demon offspring. Talking dragons and spirits are a thing in Mulan so demons must exist too. Besides this early concept art of Shan Yu really pushes the theory that Disney had plans to not make him human: 66.media.tumblr.com/27a359dc224489953a5c75c1b35bf250/tumblr_ndkcmgsIBK1skn53qo8_1280.jpg

robonaught I think what Disney was trying to do was show us the perception Chinese people would've had during the mongol invasion. Shaun Yu is exaggerated in his demonic features so that the audience feels the same terror as China would have without seeing an actual mongol raider. Using an analysis of just their appearance you could make the judgement that all of the Huns are inhuman because of their appearance. A real life example of this is the Japanese drawings of the American ships in 1853 CE, they interpreted the ships to be devils themselves, even though they were just ships. It is plausible that someone could look like Shaun Yu but I believe that his features have been exaggerated either to show he is more beast then man but still human or to represent the fear of the unknown that the people of Asia had about the Mongols

Shan Yu is intimidating and horrorific because he's... real. A real khan of an nomadic orda, with realistic atrocity. Not only huns, but avars, mongols, tatar... In Europe and Asia many times armies had known a sensation of fear and anxiety that this soundtrack geniusly explains. I think the romans, the chinese, the russians, the arabs in front of similar khans and theyr cavalry army. The last nomad like army, the Crimea tatars khanate, ended in XVIII century. Day before yesterday. So, we can ponder how terrifing could be Shan Yu, great warrior and leader.
@robertcorbell1006 Жыл бұрын
The same applies to William "Redstick" Weatherford in the Davy Crockett movie. Any real-life villain in a Disney movie will always be the biggest and baddest. Same with Claude Frollo, a fictional embodiment of the evil and hypocrisy of the Inquisition. I feel sorry for Captain Maula-Kaula, though. He's just a freedom fighter committing acts of piracy to save Malaysia. That British co-production shows that the victors write the books.

Im playing Total War Attila, and i can say that any gutural song is terrifying for me. An sole army of horsemen that shot arrows while they ride is the apocalipsy of any traditional infantary warfare canon. On the campaing map a normal army may get 2 or 3 turns (one station: 3 months) to cross from hungary to france. The huns make this move in 1 solid turn. They suffer no attrition, the army is full stack, full of money and all the units are high tier. You have to kill Attila 4 or 5 times IN BATTLE to be able to destroy the faction permanently. If you kill him or all the hordes before this achievment, they return in the next turn full and fresh. 9 armies marching together.......those were the end of days.
@danielsmithiv1279 Жыл бұрын
@@pauloamaral6069 Shan Yu had end-of-civilization armies--armies of the apocalypse. When I became an adult and started to reflect on military leaders, both fictional and non-fictional, I realized that Shan Yu was not normal. He was otherworldly. So, when I watch shows like Vikings or Game of Thrones, it blows my mind because if men like Shan Yu were present in those shows, them mofos wouldn't care about "expanding to the west" or "taking over the throne." These otherwordly menaces like Shan Yu would've focused on destroying entire CIVILIZATIONS!!! These were warriors bred for doomsday--to bring calamity and devastation upon the Earth. Ragnar Lothbrook wanted to expand to the west and make a name for himself. But Shan Yu wanted to end civilizations and show the world that they went soft and prove that he was a god of war. Big difference. I believe Ragnar would've been smart and made efforts to learn their ways of godlike warfare though. He would not only join them, but study them. That's what makes Ragnar Lothbrook very special. Most men dont think like that.

People complain Shan Yu was 1 dimensional and cliche! I don’t think they realize that was the intent! Everything in Mulan comes from the solders’ perspectives. Their Captain starts off a bit mean but becomes one of the bois, the Emperor’s Consul is a stuffy politician, the Emperor is wise and benevolent, and their enemies are literal Huns! (During ww2, the Americans didn’t actually know about the Holocaust, but they still referred to Germans as Huns so their men wouldn’t feel guilty about killing other humans!)

As a tracker and falconer, I really love the scene where they figure out so much just by using a little girls doll's material. From it's scent, to the weave, it's horsehair, they have such an intimacy with the land, they adapt and strategize. An advantage they have over sedentary civs like the Chinese.

Fun fact: Shan yu name was based on a turkic word called Şanyu (Or Tanhu) which meant 'Leader of the huns'.
@robonaught4 жыл бұрын
Actually its based on Chanyu. The title given to Xiongnu leaders. Xiongnu being what the Huns in this movie are supposed to be but they just called them Huns cuz Xiongnu would be a harder word for the English audience. The Chinese dub even calls them Xiongnu.
@erasmus1814 жыл бұрын

Also RIP to Pres Romanillos who is also partly responsible for bringing the great Hun to life. He was Shan Yu's supervising animator. It's so sad they both died due to types of cancer. Miguel had throat cancer while Pres had leukemia. Pres was only 47 years old when he died😢 Seriously fuck cancer! I hate it for killing my grandad(HE DIED ON APRIL 1ST NOT FUNNY!)and I hate it for killing the people that bring characters that are dear to our hearts to life. I bet even Shan Yu hates cancer!

The man was competent which is rare for Disney villians. He promoted good people and encouraged good ideas. His men determined the location and composition of the Emperor's army from a doll. Mulan had to drop a mountain on him and his army to stop them and even that didn't kill him or deter his resolve.
