I actually feel really bad for Tana. Is she irresponsible and not the best influence? Yes, but based upon watching her when I was young, she talked about emotional and physical ab•se at home, and then as a minor was in a serious relationship with an adult. I grew up with parental controls and there is a suprising amount of content that isn't blocked. Luckily I never like youtubers like Shane and really only watched a lot of commentary, so I escaped a lot of this stuff. But there was a lot of written content on things like Wattpad and AO3 that was not blocked, or at the very least I could easily get around. I would definitely just say that don't force your kid to tell you what they're watching online, but also make sure that as they get older they're developing the correct morals. Because while parental controls could block a lot of things (such as graphic images), you definitely can get content that is too explicit for someone at the age of 10.

from afar, tana seems like a textbook case of a kid being influenced into being a shitty person to be cool. theres no way to know for sure if she would have been better if left to mature on her own, but i dont think its a stretch to say that hanging around shane so much at such a critical, impressionable age (literally what is perceived as the years you become a real adult) had an impact on the things she found funny and acceptable to say/do.

If you've watched any of Tana's older content, it's pretty clear that she didn't have good role models at any point in her life. She talks about her relationship with her parents and how she basically had to raise herself AND financially and emotionally support her parents. She wasn't raised with good boundaries, so it's unsurprising (and obviously unfortunate) that she never really developed healthy boundaries as an adult.

I was one of those kids that I think this deeply affected. He was my favorite KZbinr and many of the patterns he teaches in his videos I followed through middle and early high school, and thought it was okay to be into these topics, making these jokes, and excited for the day I turn 18. I’m 18 and in college now and obviously know better, but it’s so sad to see him resurfacing. His videos keep showing up on my recommended.
