As someone who did the breadsticks at olive garden, there's a really simple answer to the "theory". No, we cannot and do not reuse the breadsticks. First of all, the breadsticks are sent until you get your order. After that, you'd have to ask. Second, I would not have been busting my ass to the point of having a large second degree burn on my arm, and still being told to make them faster at impossible speeds bc I cannot possibly do it any quicker than the 4 minutes they take in the oven and the maybe 1 extra minute putting liquid margarine and garlic salt on them after, and getting said liquid margarine and garlic salt IN MY BURN with no worker's comp and not being let off until well after the urgent care was closed...I would NOT have had to put up with that shit if we reused breadsticks. Your bussers have to stack shit in order for everything from all their tables to fit on their carts. All food is scraped into the trash. It would be extremely illegal if we reused them after they've already been taken out of the machine that keeps them warm.

As someone who works in a coffee shop/bakery thats licensed by a popular coffee brand, health code is very strict. Once something is in the hands of a customer, even if it looks like it hasnt been touched or eaten, it has to be marked out and thrown away if its returned. I /hate/ food waste. Its incredibly upsetting to me and we arent allowed to take it when its going out. So my team and i work hard to make sure we dont overbake and keep waste low. I am APPALLED at how much food shane just wasted for this stupid theory. Theres also no way hes donating those breadsticks. The waiter also grabbed the breadsticks off the table right away because olive garden tends to be very busy and they need to clear the table as soon as possible for the next people. It becomes increasingly clear how privileged he is that he can't even understand the concept of how a service job works. Them basically harassing the staff of a restaurant is actually infuriating. They didn't even have the courtesy to confess it, after the fact. Just left without not even saying sorry. And, for something this stupid. Restaurants, especially chain restaurants, don't re-use food after it's been served. It would be extremely risky and so not worth it for something some cheap bread sticks, they cost like close to nothing to make when you buy the ingredients in bulk.

But also this and the recycled pizza theory just shows me this man has never worked a day in his life, I worked in a gas station kitchen for 5 fucking years, you throw food away all the time, corporate wants you to throw out a certain percentage of the food you make for the display because that means to them that you're keeping food in there so you're not missing out on potential sales For the pizza theory, no successful business is penny pinching over food that has already been paid for, they're just not. Where I worked, the whole pizza cost less to make than we sold a single slice for, they're not that desperate for money. For the breadsticks, they're offering them free because they're cheap to make, they're not gonna risk their business for something that costs pennies to make, it's not worth it, and when you're ordering 60 of them and paying for it, they're definitely not going to pull that shit because it's already paid for.
