I am 84 years old and watched Shane in 1953 in bleak post war Britain. It has travelled with me through life and I notice that I am not alone. It influenced my choice to come to Australia and see the wide open spaces when I was young.

My Great Grandfather drove a Hansom Cab in London and I have always wondered what made him decide to move to Australia.I have often surmised it may have been a desire to live in a wide open land? Perhaps his experience with horses may have been a factor too? I wonder if many British troops who fought in the American War of Independence decided to stay in the USA after the war because of similar feelings?

I live in Jackson Hole. I never get tired of watching Shane ride down out of the Gros Ventre. The movie was made before the Jackson Hole Ski Area was developed across the way. At Stark's cabin you can see the Gros Ventre Slide, which happened in 1925. The movie takes place near the old town site of Kelly, which was settled before Jackson town. The slide caused a flood the aftermath of which caused many to move.

Chairman (Mao) Powell & Fed. Reserve is Mr. Riker at Jackson Hole and are the hired gunmen for the very rich who are robing America blind with debt that they do not owe in order to bring down the Constitution & Dollar. Next, they will implode the dollar system with a boom and bust stockmarket, while, foolish men make plenty of un-worked for ill gotten gain-- easy money. The credit system will implode by despotic design. Then, Fed. Res. will bring in their slave system of Digital Currency (CBDC) which is no currency at all. Just credit at the company store like the sharecropping system of the South wherein farmers got very little for their labor. Digital Currency will allow the Jackson Hole looters to rule over the people with near absolute control seeing everything you buy and telling you what you can buy and if you can buy or sell!! Sound familiar -- Revelation's The Mark of the Beast System. But, God will have the last Word in the Salvation of Man with The Lord Jesus Christ and the preaching of the Gospel bringing men to repentance from dead works by the work of the Holy Spirit through faith toward God by His Grace through Faith least any man should boast. Thanks for reading. God Bless

Shane rides down into the valley with his head held high in hopes of finding a new and better life. As the movie ends, he retraces his steps, head down with the realization that he can't escape the life of a gunslinger. I was so moved by this movie that I named my son Shane.

I was 9 years old when I saw Shane in the neighborhood theater. The acting, settings, music and most importantly the realistic, convincing dialog never left my memory. Since then I have watched this movie over and over, never tiring of every scene. Brandon deWilde was superb in his role. I was saddened by his early death and the passing as well of Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur and Van Heflin. One of the best westerns in league with High Noon and Stagecoach for dialogue.

I was almost Joey's age when I first saw Shane. Time has not dimmed the enormous appeal it held for me then. Despite so little gunplay compared to later Westerns, the movie riveted one's attention throughout with heroic characters, a strong storyline, and breathtaking scenery. I always felt grateful to George Stevens for taking this assignment so seriously and making an insignificant cowboy novel into a grand movie of undying beauty.

The book was insignificant in the sense of not getting initial critical acclaim but the writing was deep enough that George Stevens, to his eternal credit, recognized the characters had great depth to them, with the makings of a potential triangle that Shane heroically rides away from at the end.

Alan Ladds beautifully understated performance shines throughout this classic film. Shane is the baddest gun in the west and he knows it. No bragging, no look at me and my lightning draw. Just a quiet confidence and assuredness in everything he does. Even when he encounters hired gun Jack Wilson, there is never a doubt who will win. Shane cooly dispatches Wilson into a pickle barrel! Ladds Shane is the easiest hero to root for in film history because he's on the side of right. And in Shane's hands a sixgun doesn't just make right. It makes might. Robert Redfords Sundance Kid, Clint Eastwoods Josey Wales. They all better turns their pistols in to the bartender. Not one of them can mess with Shane. The baddest hero in the greatest western of them all.

As the decades go by, Shane becomes more shrouded in mystic...the scenery, the production values...and Victor Young's peerless soundtrack which has never been equalled;...well, maybe 'The Big Country', ( Jerome Moross ). Young can transform a scene with just few notes...another example is the take-off sequence, ( YT ), of a B-36 in 1955's 'Strategic Air Command'. The Shane theme is called 'The Call of the Faraway HIlls'. Victor Young died a few years later in 1956, a great loss the the music profession.

Haunting and evocative, one of the most beautiful color movies ever made, probably my all time favorite western film, those virtually insignificant people enduring that vast wilderness landscape, too bad theres no winter snow scenes, wouldve been better.

Alan Ladd was born to play Shane. In the novel, the protagonist is portrayed as dark and slightly "menacing", but George Stevens luckily chose Alan Ladd when he couldn't get his first choice, Montgomery Clift. Stevens' camera simply loved Ladd. Beautiful like a blonde Greek god... Shane, come back!!!

Shane - a Christian film: I think most people who see this film will - unfortunately - only grasp the surface. They will not realize (or only a few and rarely) that SHANE is a deeply Christian film. You can see this in so many scenes, especially at the beginning when Shane suddenly appears (and how director George Stevens orchestrates this), enters the lives of the boy, the father, and the mother, and into the story, who are changed by him, as are all people who are of good heart, and remain wholly changed by him (forever). He remains unforgettable and indelible to them, they remember him, thank him and love him. He became - and remains - their role model. This becomes especially clear in the final scene of the film. The boy begs, even pleads with Shane not to leave him (and it clearly goes beyond him, because he means not only himself, but us). But Shane must go, for he has completed his work, his work of liberation. Now it is up to the people whom he met and to whom he gave an example that completely and fundamentally changed their lives to keep him within themselves and to follow his example. This can only happen inside people, in their hearts, and then in the outside, in people's actions. The boy will recognize this (or does he already recognize it in the last seconds of the film?). In any case, the viewer can recognize it. After watching the film, one should again watch the beginning and the end of the film very carefully. How do I come to this analysis? Well, we must know and consider that 12 years later George Stevens created another film, very significant and profound in its staging - "The Greatest Story of All Time" with Max von Sydow in the role of the Savior Jesus Christ. And how he did this, if you don't know this anyway, makes us realize that George Stevens was devout Christian. And now watch the movie "SHANE" again under this aspect. So you will realize that Shane (also - and this makes the fascinating multidimensionality of this film and the character SHANE) is very clearly an allegory of Jesus Christ, clothed in the clothes of an ideal man, a Western hero. He is meek and peaceful, thinks this is better, even the commanded thing, wants to remain so at all costs - but cannot. He doesn't murder in the end, only the circumstances force him to (avert) violence - he has to resist and kill the evil to protect the good, the good (and believing) people... and save them. SHANE is therefore a profound and meaningful film. Certainly, I would not have come to the aforementioned conclusions had I not seen the film "The Greatest Story Ever Told" directed by George Stevens 12 years later and then read by chance that he was a Christian. So I can only recommend everyone to see this wonderful and moving film SHANE once again under the aspect I have outlined.

I disagree, this movie is about a man, who realizes the wild west era is over. There is no place for gunslingers in the late 1900's. He is headed north, and trying to put his past behind him, and trying to figure out what he is going to do for the rest of his life. He even backs down from a fight in the early part of the movie, because he is tired of violence and killing, and wants to live a peaceful life. But then he realizes that evil triumphs when good men stand by and do nothing. He cleans up the town, and then comes to the conclusion that his past will follow him the rest of his life. He moves on, with hope for redemption, in yet another town.

Another issue was when Shane was leaving the ranch and he was getting invited to stay for dinner. Look at the location of Jean Arthur's spot and she moves 5 feet from a second to the next without showing her moving. Standing next to cabin - then she is about 5 feet away from the cabin walking to the cabin. Shown at the 7:32 sec. mark. Take care!

I watched this again after seeing this intro (thanks, Amazon Prime!), and I was really impressed. I had seen it some time ago, but it must have been a cut version on cable, and/or I just wasn't paying attention. For a 1953 western, there are so many subtle things going on here that I was just blown away. I didn't realize how closely _Pale Rider_ , one of my favorite Clint Eastwood westerns, was based on this. Truly a classic.
