I loved this band and was able to see them in concert many times. I do know that the bassest Jon Sproule left the band in 1989 and went to bible college in the Twin Cities to become a youth pastor. I attended the same Bible college and go to know him before I left and went to a different Bible College. ALl of their CDS, were great and they have performed over the years. Rex Carroll is a great guitarist. Their stage present and message of God's salvation during their concerts was very moving.

Rex Carroll gives virtual guitar lessons now but after the split with Scott Wenzel, Rex did form another band named King James. Pretty kick ass music as well if you'd like to check them out. Jimi Bennet the lead singer is a super awesome nice guy. As far as Scott goes he kind of just fell of the radar. Probably just living a normal life.

Dove Award , as mentioned elsewhere in comments, is the award given at the annual Gospel Music Association award show (typically in Nashville). And, CCM is "Christian Contemporary Music". Scott Wenzel's Voice should remind you of between Stephen Pearcy and Robert Plant (especially later albums like _Unveiled_ ). Finally, please be sure to grab a listen to Bloodgood. . . standout tracks include "Heartbeat of the City", "She's Gone", "Top of the Mountain", "Rounded Are the Rocks", and "Lamb of God"

@@GrantH "World class"? Let's see. Ratt had WAYYYYY more exposure than Whitecross, and THAT is no joke! If Whitecross had been given the platform that Ratt enjoyed for it's entire career, Rex Carroll would be a household name. Besides, when I stated that Whitecross was "WAY better than Ratt and more consistent!" I was simply stating my OPINION. We're all allowed to have one, you know.

Rex Carroll is still rockin, now with King James, try “Prisoner” kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKPceYefmNZrgdk I was lucky both to play bass for Rex when he visits the east coast, and also to be on the bill of a reunion show starring Whitecross, Petra(tops sales records) & the (30th?) anniversary of Stryper’s “To Hell With The Devil”. Rex combines Gary Moore blues, Michael Schenker and Warren DiMartini riffs and leads, and many other stellar influences, incorporating the best off each. and is known to own a stage with a true “band, take a break” guitar solo. One magazine ranked him #2 Christian rock guitarist, with Stryper’s guys coming in around 15 & 30th... cool, keep rockin...🤘🎸😎

I still get this band, Redd Kross, and Barren Cross mixed up. (Really don't know anything about any of them - it's just all the names!) Thank you for pointing out the riff similarity to Boyz Are Gonna Rock because that was the first thing I thought....also thought there was a twinge of Looks That Kill in the opening as well. I agree there were points of the vocal that were Stephen Pearcy-ish and funny they were considered "the Christian Ratt" - especially when Ratt also has a song titled Enough is Enough. Overall, I thought this was a decent jam and if I did not know any different, I would not take this as Christian metal.

Here's all their albums for Whitrcross: whitecross, hammer and nail, triumphant return, in the kingdom, high gear, unveiled( my favorite), equilibrium(another fav) and flytrap. The Dove Awards are the Christian equivalent to the Grammy's and should really be called The Don't Forget About Us Over Here In Christian Music Awards. I understand why they exist but if you're truly playing music for the glory of God, I'm not sure you'd put much emphasis on winning a Dove Award (or a Grammy for that matter). I was fortunate enough to see Whitecross on 5 occasions and each concert, they put on a fantastic show. Obviously, the highlight of each evening was Rex Carroll performing his theatrics on the guitar. Whitecross has most often been compared to Ratt and with good reason. IMO, their best albums were the ones released in the beginning. Whitecross (1987), Hammer & Nail (1988), Triumphant Return (1989), In The Kingdom (1991), and High Gear (1992) were a pretty solid discography and they could have called it a career at that point for me. The first 4 tracks (Who Will You Follow?, Enough Is Enough, He Is The Rock, Lookin' For A Reason) from the debut are definitely worth checking out. As is track 9, Nagasake. The 2nd album was kind of a letdown for me. I was expecting more of that raw energy from the debut and instead, the band recorded a more polished offering. Nothing wrong with that. It just didn't live up to my expectations. That being said, I thought Because Of Jesus and Top Of The World were fantastic. Honorable mentions would go to When The Walls Tumble Down and Take It To The Limit. Their 3rd album, Triumphant Return, opens with a killer track, Attention Please. One of the best songs in their discography. Red Light, Shakedown, and Heaven Calling Tonight are other highlights of that album. With the release of In The Kingdom, the band finally started to see some limited commercial success. A couple of songs charted on the Christian charts and a fairly popular video was made for the title track. The opening 2 songs, No Second Chances and We Know What's Right, pelted out some pretty intense hooks and driving beats. It was with this album that the band really started to leave behind the "hair metal" sound and go for more of a hard rock angle, garnering some extra fans in the process. Fans of bands like Petra and WhiteHeart started to gravitate towards this more accessible sound of Whitecross. The 5th release, High Gear, would round out their best material. Dancin' In Heaven, Without Your Love, Coming Home, Gonna Keep On, and Long Road To Walk are the highlights for me with probably Without Your Love as my favorite. It's just a driving hard rock tune. The closer, Long Road To Walk, is a wonderful example of the energy Whitecross captured in concert. It's a slower, edgy tune but with a heavy groove. After High Gear, Rex would leave Whitecross to form King James, another Christian hard rock band, and also to pursue making a blues record. It was at this point that Whitecross shifted to more of a raw grunge, garage sound and lost many fans in the process. Unveiled (1994) had some mild success with Come Unto The Light winning Hard Music Song of the Year at the aforementioned Dove Awards. Equilibrium (1995) and Flytrap (1996) would soon follow. These are decent albums but generally are only found in the diehard fan's collection. On a side note, Unveiled and Equilibrium would feature Barry Graul on guitar who would go on to join the contemporary Christian group MercyMe. Flytrap would feature guitarist Quinton Gibson, current touring member with Darius Rucker. Gibson was also a member of Christian metal band, Seraiah and Christian pop/rock duo, Kid Promise along with Brad Beckey, vocalist from Seraiah. In 2005, Whitecross would enter the studio once more with Rex Carroll and re-record the debut album, titling the new project simply, Nineteen Eighty Seven. As great as the songs were from that debut, the knock on the album was always the lack of production which mostly was laid at the feet of a low budget from the record label. The re-recorded version adds much needed bass and thundering drums, this time provided by Michael Feighan who joined the band on the In The Kingdom album. The majority of the songs pretty much stay true to the original versions with only minor differences in maybe a solo or two. I also believe the songs were recorded a half-step down or so to fit Scott Wenzel's range at the time. But all in all, a very nice addition to the discography of Whitecross. Check them out.

Whitecross No Way I’m Goin’ Down (lyrics) Fooled me once, fooled me twice That's the last time I'm taking your advice I didn't believe I was bound by sin You never let on about the shape I was in Heard you callin' yeah, you hypnotized Had me going with your big disguise You thought I'd never get wise It's no wonder they call you the father of lies No way I'm goin' down No way I'm goin' down I was in the ring thought the light was fixed I needed help and I needed it quick You had my number I was almost down You didn't think I'd last for another round I was on the ropes and I had a hunch You were coming in with a knock out punch Then the King stepped in, said that's as far as it goes Now look who's wearing the bloody nose No way I'm goin' down
