Yes, it's a brand new video. Ben Clarkson really took the reins on this one and I think he did a stellar job. The piece, For Many, is a special one for me. It wouldn't exist had I not gotten a letter from an 8 year old boy in Vermont. Thanks for reaching out, young sir. Over the course of my life I've seen that we attach ourselves to standards. That in itself is not a bad thing... standards are important. They're part of how we learn to elevate ourselves above ideas that we've outgrown. The problem is that those same standards can become anchors... they can be what holds us back from evolving further. So we must be constantly resetting our standards so we can pull ourselves forward and help ourselves move away from concepts that no longer serve us. Beauty has always been a strange standard... how can we make uniform something that everyone has their own opinion of? The danger in allowing beauty to continue being a standard is that it then becomes the way we assign value to people. I wrote this piece as a way to speak to that.
Featuring the track "For Many" from the new album "Debris" by Shane Koyczan And The Short Story Long.

Listening to your poems has changed my view on life, I used to think I was ugly, I wasn't enough, now I realise maybe I'm not as good looking as others, maybe I'm not as smart as others but that doesn't mean that I don't have good intention and a good personality. Thank you Shane

If I could change one thing I would change the fact that I get a rash every time I eat or smell or touch something wrong. That my Mum gets a belly ache from eating certain foods and the doctor can't tell her what. That we have to read every packet and label on what we eat, smell and wear because if we don't it hurts. I would teach cancer cells to stop growing and show them what they are meant to do, so they aren't lost without purpose. I would teach ears to listen when people are speaking and mouths to not judge so quickly. If I could change one thing I would heal my dog's hips so she doesn't have to live in pain from something she was born with. I would show eyes how to see because everyone deserves to be able to make shapes from the clouds in the sky. I would regrow limbs so people would be able to walk again and maybe learn to fly. If I could change one thing I would give it to you because I can survive.

I almost cried just now. Like I dont think anyone understands how much your poems mean to me. I remember when I first saw your poetry, a friend was showing it to us when we were young and when we were having a sleepover. It was the one about Porkchops? You know the one. And we all laughed because we didnt listen to the message and just heard the word porkchop. My friend was furious but we didnt understand why. Until a few weeks later, I watched it alone. I isolated myself and watched it, making sure I wouldnt be interrupted. I never cried so hard over someone's words. I never heard a message so clearly. So I got into every poem. The one about tomatoe kisses and the one where the crickets had arthritis became my religion.I would listen to it on the bus everyday and cry or smile when I felt like shit because my emotions arent the most balanced and my life kinda sucks depending on the week. I never been so happy that another person was born until I heard your poetry. SO thank you for existing.

Shane. I love you. I don't know if you'll ever read this, but I bet you do, so... I really love you. For your values, your words, those mountains you move. I'm not quite sure if you know how much all your poems mean to me. All my life I wanted to be an author, wanted my words to touch people, change something... I don't know if I'll ever be able to do it, but at least I'll try... Just know, that whenever I listen to your poems, over and over again, it's as if they're new words, words, I'ven ever even heard and they just sum up perfectly the way I feel, in a way I've never heard before. Thank you so much. I don't care what you look like. I don't care what anyone looks like as long as there's something in there, feeling, loving, burning in passion. (Sorry for bad english, by the way, I'm just a german girl dreaming of someday finding the right words)

This seems to be a touchy subject for a lot of people, but what's considered beautiful are the features which distinguish most suitable mates. Leanness in men, wide hips in women, etc.; they're all features which have historically produced more viable offspring, hence we desire them in our partners and ourselves. Some people are more beautiful than other people, and anybody who wouldn't change one thing about themselves is deluded. The answer is not fooling yourself into thinking that no matter how you look you're beautiful, it's accepting what you can't change, and changing what you can for the better.

+Crazy Hans Nice try, but selective advantages don't change over the course of decades, nor even centuries like that! Your explanation is not a bad one, but it's terribly limited and does quite a poor job in explaning beauty standards over alleged signs of fitness (in a Darwinian sense). First and foremost, partner selection in favour of fitness is not as easy to explain as you're trying to make it seem, as sometimes even signs that appear to show lower fitness are the ones being selected, because they meanwhile portray higher fitness - only it's not superficially visible. I'm clearly thinking of peacocks as an example here. Fruit flies that show homosexual behaviour have been shown to have a higher number of descendents. So you see that saying: this and that shows higher fitness is not THAT simple. Not to mention: where the hell did you get the idea that leanness demonstrates fitness? From an evolutionary point of view: do you know what your body fat is actually there for?! And beauty standards go farther than prolific hips as well. Beauty standards include traits that have absolutely nothing to do with an individual's fitness, such as the symmetry of their face, eye colour, the shape of their ears and nose, the lengt of their legs. And yet I'm not swiping everyone's colon for their enteric flora! And what's more important: beauty standards change all the time and differ interculturally, so they are quite literally bound to time and space and NOT universally valid; survival, however, doesn't leave that much room for variation. Believe it or not, what our society despises most nowadays (fat women) has been a beauty standard in the rennaissance! Women weren't required to shave themselves until around the 1940s! And androgynous men received much more love in ancient greece than they do now! To try and argue in favour of flaw in our society with poorly based science it's what truly is deluded! You might think that our perspective on beatuty is a given feat, self-evident even; but that's just a lie you're being told - or maybe telling yourself, I don't know... And though your last sentence kinda shows some good intentions there, your argumentation is that of someone who recognises problems in the world we live in, but does nothing to change it, most likely rejects change; rather seeks justifications for "why it's not that bad after all!" - and that is a disposable attitude, if you ask me! Science does not back you up in this, don't abuse it for your views (even if this view is shared by millions of others, I AM aware of that, but: "Sanity is not statistical." - George Orwell). The ANSWER is not to accept what we can't change; it's not convincing ourselves that we're all beautiful either! It's changing the definition of beautiful so it doesn't go as to cause harm, but joy - what the term is actually meant to do! Because man defines beauty, beauty shouldn't define man!

Thank you for this, it really speaks to me. I've often been asked if there was any one thing I would change about myself or my life, and the answer is always the same - I wouldn't change a thing, because otherwise I wouldn't be the same person I am today, and I'm actually happy with who I am. If someone else doesn't like something about me, then that's too bad, because I'm not going to change in order to fit into somebody else's mold.
