I live in Shanghai and dress up for Halloween. The main issue, first and foremost, is preventing a crowd crush that might kill spectators, like the one that happened in Seoul during Halloween two years ago. Korea now has new restrictions as does Shibuya in Tokyo. But yes, the police questioned and briefly detained kids wearing edgy and satirical costumes. I got the treatment for my outfit last year (I was a WWII US Flying Tiger pilot and my jacket had a KMT flag which I had to remove) so I went to a Halloween river cruise this year and skipped downtown.

How many people in China celebrate Halloween? I don't think there are more than 1 million people, and I think they are concentrated in Shanghai. Every year, I see Western media spreading Halloween costumes to satirize politics, and every year it's Shanghai. Every year there are only a dozen pictures, and the rest of the content is up to guess; mainly because I don't see anyone celebrating Halloween around me or in the city center, I always feel that the news describes another part of the world
@funkymonk53442 күн бұрын
Then you have been living under a rock, because Halloween has become a very popular celebration among youngsters in Shanghai. Last year the streets in downtown were full of people wearing Halloween costumes.
@yuanjing2621Күн бұрын
@@funkymonk5344 You are right, maybe it is very popular among young people in Shanghai; but what I want to say is that it is not very popular in other large cities with a population of more than 10 million or in China as a whole. So, I think it is not valid to use the phenomenon of Halloween to show the current situation in China.

I don't remember Halloween being a Christian holiday. Do you?
@malavoy13 күн бұрын
@@lambertlum1087 It is. It's full name is All Hallows Eve. It's the night before All Souls Day. However, it's placement at this time of the year is due to the fact that there was a pagan holiday called Samhain (and probably others). It's a habit christianity has had for almost 2000 years (Christmas is on 12/25 because it drew people away from the winter solstice festivals of the pagans, not because anyone has a birth certificate to prove that particular date).
