David Weddington, From Murfreesboro TN has a Philco Shop. He sold me a NOS CRT for this set. Beautiful shipping job, as you can see in this video. I am very pleased with the result. Thanks David for your help! His email address is service@50spredicta.com.

And believe it or not easier to get parts many times. If an IC goes out of production and the spares have all been sold your out of luck. Custom IC or ASIC's will reduce a modern thing be it a TV radio computer networking equipment all to e-waste.

From about 31:00, I have never seen an CRT in such a set so darn Sharp! One could count the Scanlines. My complements in how to restore such a set. :-)

I suspect the CRT lens becomes cloudy as the result of oxidation/exposure to the air. It's too bad, after a thorough cleaning, one couldn't spray the inside with some clear coating to prevent the inner surface of the lens from oxidizing. If memory serves, these models originally used a CRT with 2.65V filament and a rather acute deflection angle.

I have to clean it at least once a year. I don’t know if treating it with a clear spray would resolve the issue or ruin the mask.

Hey, Kent you are a first-class act - I'm retired from a 50-year film/tv career as an actor/writer/producer - and it all began when I was 11 years old and working at WSVL Radio, a low-wattage radio station in Shelbyville Indiana - and why is this important? It is because the station engineer Marvin Young had a CBS Color Wheel Field Sequential system in his shop at the station - from then on I was hooked - our first set at home was a Westinghouse H840CK15 - big as a fridge with a 15" picture from a 15gp22 picture tube - the phosphors on that, though not really bright, produced a deep, rich color picture - Marvin taught me the basics, and at home I drove my mother crazy by spending hour upon hour upon hour keeping that Westinghouse converged (it drifted) - when all set up it had a gorgeous picture! Unfortunately, we traded the Westinghouse for an RCA CTC-5 which we thought a big deal as the 21AXP22 metal tube was 21" and not 15" (we kept that set for several years and when I was in High School I replaced the 21AXP22 with a new one) -- OK, all this to comment: it drives me absolutely nuts when viewing You Tube repair and demo videos that everyone I've seen, without exception, leaves ambient light on the front of the pix tube!! And why? When you installed the 12FDP4 I held my breath to see the difference, it was amazing, however when you took note of the 'black' and 'white' as well as the focus the lights above in your shop were refecting off the tube as well as a lighted area behind the camera. Believe me, I learned as a kid, when you make a repair, make sure you're examining the picture in a dark room! BTW, loved the replacement - and how much did you pay David for that tube?

Hi Kent - thanks for the video - enjoyed it very much. I have a tandem that I need to adjust the linearity and couldn't tell how you did it to make the images less egg shaped. Mine is watchable but when circular images are on screen its really noticeable. Is it a magnet adjustment or through the shaft of one of the knobs? my continental less so - both with 21FDP4 tubes
@KOVintageTech
@KOVintageTech 2 жыл бұрын
Usually the linearity problem is cap related. Any leaky caps in the vertical sweep circuits will affect this badly. The linearity control is probably inside one of the shafts like you said. Do you get any control when adjusting the linearity? Those pots are also problematic. Many have to be replaced.

Will a 21DMP4 replace the 21" tube in a Holiday model Predicta ?? Thanks
@KOVintageTech
@KOVintageTech 2 жыл бұрын
I am not familiar with the 21DMP4. Perhaps the info below will help you. From Dennis Mr. Detrola at Antique Radio Forum: www.antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=152749 "Yes, there are plenty of tubes that will work electrically, but the neck is too long. Some leave the back oval cover off the CRT housing, which is not a good idea with the neck sticking out. Others have added spacers and longer screws. You can also carefully heat the back oval cover and force it down over a ball to make an indentation to clear the neck if you only need a bit more clearance, but this is tricky due to the age and chances of the plastic being brittle. Some tubes that are listed in the GE tube manual having the shortest neck length for 21" 110 degree types with high G2 voltage and electrostatic focus are 21EAP4, 21EMP4, 21EQP4, 21ESP4, 21EVP4, 21FAP4, and 21FDP4. The 21FDP4 is the one which was supposedly developed to replace the troublesome original SF21, we installed a lot of them back in the 60's. Whether or not all of those tubes have the correct shape to replace the original would need to be verified from a full spec sheet rather than a tube manual, as there may be dimensional differences in envelopes. There are also other 21" 110 degree CRT's having even longer necks but they are not a good choice unless you already have one, or can get one for free. I saw one set which had a 21CEP4 installed, and the neck stuck out of the housing by an inch or more. Had a great picture though. There are basing differences between the replacements and the original, which are easy to correct."

Why didn't you leave it connected to the boost pin? What do you mean it looks better off?? With it connected to the boost pin it sharpened right up and the scan lines popped right out!

It was hard to tell, honestly. Maybe the camera was picking up on detail I could not see with my poor eyes. I have tried the three settings since and can't really see a lot of difference. I think it is currently connected to the boost pin.

have you ever modernized one of those old TVs with newer technology? Philco tv look good playing some video games on it like fallout 76 it has a unique style that TV I wonder what's the biggest size they made ? I think some of them were called like a fishbowl TV & those wooden TVs people used to take the screens out and drop newer TVs inside the box & probably there's a kit online to convert them but I like to see a video on something like that done it's almost like making your own TV be pretty cool and neat 📺📡 & too bad you can't pick up worldwide with those old TVs like you can with old radios old radios can pick up signals &things that are unknown and bizarre some of them can even pick up phone calls & other devices & some of those old TVs radios and amplifiers with the tubes can be dangerous I heard horror stories about them like some of getting very hot tubes crack or a gas comes out of the tube or electrocuted from it even the plugs into the wall &some of those old TVs even blew up or caught on fire and some of those old TVs you used to be able to watch some of the scrambled stations if you got it to come in they used to have a repair guy that came in made sure people didn't do or have people used to hook up to satellite dish and get everything free or those conversion boxes funny how it all works with those old TVs

TecnoBit David’s email is in the description above. I used turtlewax. As you can see at the end of the video, it turned out beautifully. As I recall removing the film greatly reduced the odor. It took a while before the smell disappeared. The turtle wax needs to be applied and allowed to nearly dry. Then you buff of off with a soft cloth. Like an old T-shirt or a terry cloth wash cloth. I was amazed at how well it removed the film. Best of luck and please let us know how it went.

The clear screen is probably made of a plastic called Cellulose Acetate Butyrate. This is the same plastic used on old Craftsman screwdrivers that produce that lovely vomit smell in your toolbox. As the plastic breaks down it releases a chemical called butyric acid, which is also produced by the human body and is largely responsible for the odor of vomit.
@chetpomeroy1399
@chetpomeroy1399 4 жыл бұрын
Perhaps this oxidation/breakdown is a result of this early transparent plastic's exposure to the air. Maybe if some nonreactive clearcoating was applied to the inner surface of the screen protector to provide a barrier and prevent the predictable (no pun intended) reaction, this would avert any future event.
