I cry every time I sing this song because like so many, this childhood was my childhood as well, only I knew very well that we were very poor because like her song said....the other girls made sure I knew it. I remember my mama washing my clothes in our bathtub because we could not afford to go to the laundrymat, and she would not have me being dirty. Dolly sang this song about her Mama, but she sang this for so many children that still right now are living in terrible conditions, and like Dolly the Lord blessed me to be able to come out of poverty and live a wonderful life.

My mom use to sing this song to me though she died when I was one my dad managed to record her singing it to me before she passed away. He would always replay it every night and I'm only 13 and my dad was killed in a car crash when I was 9 but even at my grandparents where I live now I still replay that song every night since the night my mamma went missing. This song always brings a tear to my eyes. My dad was in the services so didn't see as much of him as many kids. My mother cleaned house and served school lunches to help make ends meet. My first bike was secondhand, my dad painted it a different colour so the other kids wouldn't recognise it. My second bike was built by my grandfather from bits he found by the roadside.
