Shannon has won an astounding 59 International and 49 National competition medals. Over half of these have been gold. Her tally of five medals (two silver, three bronze) at the ’92 Olympics was the most medals won by a US athlete in any sport. At the ’96 Games, she led the “Magnificent Seven” to the US Women’s first ever Team Gold and for the first time for any American gymnast, she captured Gold on the Balance Beam. She is the first American gymnast to win an individual gold medal at a fully-attended summer games and cemented her place as the most accomplished gymnast, male or female, in U.S. Olympic history.
After retiring from Olympic competition, Shannon received her undergraduate degrees in marketing and entrepreneurship from the University of Houston and her law degree from Boston College. She then moved from Olympic athlete to advocate for the health and wellness of women and children.
Shannon launched her company devoted to helping women make their health a priority in July, 2010. She continues to travel the country as a highly sought-after motivational speaker and advocate for the health and wellness of women and children. In January of 2011, Shannon was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer. She had the baseball sized tumor removed successfully and followed up with an aggressive chemotherapy regimen. Shannon has remained open and public about her diagnosis and treatment and continues to empower women to make their health a priority. Shannon is currently cancer-free and continues to be a strong advocate for early detection.
Shannon’s book, It’s Not About Perfect: Competing for My Country and Fighting for My Life, is her inspirational memoir written to encourage and empower others to break through and overcome their own personal challenges.
Shannon remains involved with the sport of gymnastics and the Olympics as a commentator and analyst.

I just recently discovered your channel. When I watch gymnastics on KZbin I often wondered what was going on in the athlete's minds while performing their routines, so it's nice to have some insight into that. I remember first seeing you on the international stage at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, and of course 1996 in Atlanta. You and your teammate Kerri Strug were my favorites of the Magnificent Seven. I now live in Oklahoma City and have seen your exhibit at the Jim Thorpe Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame. Well done on a fantastic gymnastics career.

You have always been my favourite US gymnast (I’m from the UK). So graceful and precise, beautiful choreography in your routines. Is it strange watching yourself perform from back then? Xxx

The best american gymnast, queen of beam. You was sooo much better than currently gymnasts. Like all girls from 70s till late 90s you were elegant, had amazing body shape and didnt look like "circus tumblers" we can see today. Best regards from bulgaria

Ah yes body shaming at its finest. There was no need to for your miserable comments on the current girls. You could have just celebrated Shannon and that’s it.

@@jacobmiller2663 You might consider re-reading the comment. There is nothing shameful at all in the comment. There is no doubt but what gymnastics was far more elegant, precise, and graceful, and in many cases more difficult in past years than we see now from most gymnasts. Now, it's all just tumbling, which is what the previous commenter stated.

@@Vermontist1 the original comment says she had an amazing body shape unlike the tumblers of today. so they literally did shame them.
