Honestly, this sound is pretty in line with bands like Culture Club, Depeche Mode and 80s EDM bands that were the forerunner to that infamous Chicago Industrial sound of the 90s. Even Ministry! Remember what they sounded like before The Land of Rape and Honey? Remember their With Sympathy album? Probably not, children... I mean, you seen Trent singing along. Kids today think the guy is Dracula or something. The guy covered a Madonna song for God's sake. IT WAS A DIFFERENT TIME. And if you think this is crazy, wait until you find out Pantera started out as a KISS cover band-make-up, spandex and all. Writing this comment made me feel really old.

I know the sentiment has already been expressed by multiple people; but, I just wanted to thank you Scott for saving and uploading this. Like a lot of people commenting here, I found these videos specifically as a NIN fan; and definitely had a laugh the first time I watched them. Everything about them is so, "of it's time", and it's easy to make fun; especially in context to NIN. However, after a bit I came to regret my earlier mocking; because not only is it awesome as a fan of Trent's work to see this part of his journey; but moreover, these are honestly just fun tunes to listen to. It's obviously not NIN; and it's definitely a shock to see Trent so far outside of that role we know him for; but it's fun 80s synth-pop with some catchy hooks. So as someone who at one point was inclined to poke fun, I want to apologize on behalf of any misguided NIN fans. You've preserved an awesome piece of history and we're in your debt for doing so. So again, thank you for that; and for sharing your artistic creativity with us.

When I was younger in the 90’s and early 2000’s I played in bands that played several different genres. When you just want to play music, hang out with cool band mates, have fun, explore music, and hone your skills you’re open to all musical opportunities without judgement or prejudice. Those that don’t play instruments, don’t understand this philosophy. I would have given my left foot to be on TV playing my music. I would have been even more proud to have a band mate make it big like Trent. I would not have been jealous at all. I would have been so happy for him. I also would have been proud to have been part of his development. Even if I never spoke to that band mate again, I still would be grateful for the time I had with them. That’s how it works. We all aren’t destined for fame, but we all should be appreciative for the people in our lives that we enjoyed being with. Thank you for posting these great songs and being so gracious sharing your history Scott.

Meanwhile,...in a parallel universe,...Slam Bamboo got it's big break right after this performance on AM Cleveland, when a record executive from Warner Brothers Records happened to be watching the show during a layover in Cleveland. The band was ultimately signed to a lucrative record contract shortly after their keyboardist, Trent Reznor, left the band to work on his own solo music project "Pretty Hate Machine", which only sold a few thousand copies out of the trunk of his car, leading to his life of anonymity. Slam Bamboo, on the other hand, went on to release a string of five straight Top 40 hits off their first platinum-selling album. After a successful world tour with several bands opening for them, including R.E.M, Aerosmith, and the Smashing Pumpkins among others, Slam Bamboo got busy working on their second album, which included their biggest hit "Rewind Time", the theme song written for the film "Back To The Future Part III". The band also had a brief cameo appearance in that movie as a clone metal hair band in the year 2085. This song won them a Grammy and an Oscar award. As huge success came, tensions began to rise in the band as well. These tensions culminated when Scott Hanson was fired by the other band members in mid 1992 and Tim Kirker then took over as lead singer and front man. In response to his ousting, Hanson accused the others of being envious of him and said "I was fired for making them famous!". After this, public interest in the group waned, and their next single, "You Turned Your Back On Me", failed to make the Top 40. Their subsequent new album, was a commercial disappointment, peaking at only No. 38 in the U.S., although the band was still quite popular in Iceland. In an attempt to regain credibility and lose their light-hearted image, the remaining three members relaunched as Slamboo in January of 1994. Following the name change, the band released the single "You Shouldn't Do That" in August of 1994. The song was featured on their fourth album, "Crazy Rich". After this album proved unsuccessful, the group disbanded by December of 1995. The original four piece line-up of the band briefly joined forces again on VH1's "Bands Reunited" in 2003. The group received many offers and incentives to continue to play together, but disagreements continued between the band members and the reunion was short-lived. The band again dissolved the following year. Scott Hanson returned to Cleveland and after a brief stint in politics as a city alderman, he retired modestly on the residuals from "Back To The Future Part III". Greg Thomas entered drug rehab for an ecstasy addiction, then relapsed, but after a few years of sobriety, he started a successful camp for struggling bass guitar players in northern Massachusetts. Ron Musarra died in August of 2008 after being hit by a bus while crossing a street in downtown San Francisco,...he was wearing a brand new set of Beats by Dre headphones at the time, and didn't hear the bus honking at him. Tim Kirker went on to produce a few more music projects, but in 2009 he was convicted of embezzlement, and spent the next 5 years in a federal prison. When asked during a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone magazine if he would do anything differently considering the turn his life had taken, Kirker only said, "I'd probably trade places with,...heck, I don't know,...Trent Reznor." This story is based on true events,...in a parallel universe of course...

It's just a matter of luck sometimes and it can be very painful to find out that you are not good enough for the business, as for me, I would never listen to this normally, but this song is extremely catchy and it might mean nothing, but I think I will listen to it some more the next days.

+Austin People who aren't familiar with music used Emo as a label for anything that wasn't Beyonce or T-Pain back then. I remember playing Blutengel once, and someone saying "ew, turn this emo shit off!" Kind of like how all electronic music was "dubstep," even when none of it was. Edit: I love how the vocalist sounds the same regardless of how far away he swings from it.

This band is in no way bad at what they are doing, they just weren't at the right place at the right time or something. Maybe would have been succesfull if they were doing this 5 years earlier.
@crispinhandly61597 жыл бұрын
The chorus is catchy enough to be a hit. If Duran Duran made a song like this it would have been a hit. These guys were probably too niched to survive the change that happened towards the late 80's into the early 90s.

It's so awesome cuz you expect Trent to be the lead singer, then you see him brooding, playing synth, wearing all black in a sea of color. It's funny cuz it's ironic.

He's not even brooding. He seems to be genuinely having a good time.

Everyone making fun of the group and the singer needs to understand this was the 80’s. Back then this was the style. Making fun of something because it isn’t up to modern style is silly. I’m glad this was uploaded so we can see a piece of rock history that many wouldn’t have seen had it not been uploaded.

Great 80s song....👍 The influences/references that I hear and see.... Very clearly! Vocals/Music: Howard Jones mixed with Thompson Twins Look: Mark Mothersbaugh + Thomas Dolby with Michael Bolton's outfits. It took me awhile...but ya... That's the sound and visual that made this band rock! Thanks for posting this. Cheers! JerBear Charlotte USA PS...Is Trent thinking through the lyrics "I was up above it!"....🤔

Here as a result of a random fb short. Scott this is quintessentially late 80’s and for that reason alone (amongst others) it is phenomenal! Cracking song! Absolutely of it’s time and as it plays you’re immediately transported back there. For such I thank you. Play on man!
@richdelgado34052 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: The host is Scott Newell, a rather big name in Cleveland, OH at the time. Scott was a former director and musician for the New Christy Minstrels. The group at one point had members such as Kim Carnes ( "Betty Davis Eyes"), Gene Clark (The Byrds), Barry McGuire ("Eve of Destruction") and Kenny Rogers!

Scott, who wrote this song? I'd love to hear more about it. It's got a great off-kilter 6 groove; the feel and time changes are fluid, yet unexpected, and the chorus is killer! The arrangement is fantastic. Anyway, I can't stop listening to this. It's been like six months since I've found it, and I probably listen to it 2x a week.
