Shaolin Kung Fu Combat Styles: 13. plum-blossom form (梅花拳: mei hua quan)

- combat strategy:
the groundward style, with a pair of forms, mei hua quan and zhao yang quan, teaches "ground fighting". its main tactics are:
tactic 21 - "plum substitutes withering peach (李代桃僵)": substitute tactics when they fail. for example, you may fail to penetrate opponent's guard.
tactic 22 - "decorate the tree with fake blossoms (树上开花)": keep your failed tactic on display. if you completely switch to the new tactic, the opponent would shift guard to counter it. thus, still keep trying to penetrate opponent's guard, though in failure.
tactic 23 - "to steal beams, barter the pillars (偷梁换柱)": instead of opponent's upper body, target his lower body. lower body, though not as sensitive, is not as closely guarded as the upper body and is an easier target.
tactic 24 - "chain tactic (连环计)": chain moves together to increase their chance, so if one fails, the other succeeds. combine moves that aim to open opponent's upper body guard and those that attack his lower body, simultaneously or consequently.
these involve simultaneous or consequent combinations of multiple high and low moves by upper and lower limbs.

Song dynasty (960-1279):
in the early years of the dynasty, based on chief monk Fu Ju (福居)'s teachings, his disciple monk Jue Da (觉大) created 'mei hua quan'. it originally had about 96 postures.
Yuan dynasty (1279-1368):
in the late years of the dynasty, monk Jinnaluo (紧那罗) simplified mei hua quan form into about 29 postures.

- note: there are various other forms and styles named 'mei hua quan' in Chinese kung fu, and they are historically and technically different from Shaolin mei hua quan. these are just different styles with similar names.
