So the staff is spinning counterclockwise in both the front and back? That is what it looks like. When I do it, I do it the way it is shown to. But it seems when I go to the back it spins clockwise, and then I have to shift to counter when I get to the front. It isn't a perception thing. There is some kind of hiccup in what I am doing.

I hope you realize Bo in Japanese means stick, so when you say "Bo staff," you are basically saying "stick staff"

roman acosta Bo is pronounced essentially the same way as Bow, it is common practice in the west to refer to it as a "Bo Staff" to avoid that confusion. It's also good to differentiate between Bo and Jo. And when using English, one must understand that "Staff" is a generic term that describes several different things, and using "Bo" or "Jo" is just a means of clarifying that meaning, as opposed to a "walking staff", "magic staff", "working staff". I would like to acknowledge your comment as well intended, but I find it that it simply serves as a condescending way to insinuate that someone who has practiced with and taught the use of a weapon for so many years would not know the meaning behind the weapon or the translation of the word used to describe it. These are often the first things that someone learns before picking up the weapon. Perhaps try in the future to offer such information in an earnest way. "Did you know that 'Bo' in Japanese mean's stick? So 'Bo Staff' Basically means 'Stick Staff'" You are more likely to experience positive feedback that way.

Just my opinion. I don't think spinning the bo would do anything to damage the opponent, just showy. If it hits something, the bo is going to rebound.

Man, I got a question for you, why if you are teaching kung fu, that is a chinese martial art, you use de japaneses terms for the forms and weapons?, as I know is not kata is tou lou, and is not bo, is gundao

Juan Gutiérrez While you have a strong point, I feel that the term "Bo" is just something that is more familiar to the general population. And as a martial arts instructor seeking to spread the knowledge, using something familiar to the people is a much more inviting way of getting them to check it out and try something new. In a more serious setting I would encourage the term proper to the style you are practicing. But "Bo" serves his purpose here.

Aren't you teaching Chinese Wushu/Kungfu? Surely though ... calling that weapon a "Bo" or "Bo staff" is like calling your Sifu as "Sensei"Bo, Jo, and Tanbo are all Japanese names for the various lengths of stick weapon, I don't know what the Chinese call it but they don't speak Japanese languageAlso I have both used, and been put down with, blunt instruments in real situations and in reality they have to have some wheight behind them. A broom handle just wont break a shin or patella , you can only use it to thrust likea spear. Spinning it around wont break your opponent either...
