Just wanted to say thank you Jake. About 7 years ago I watched this video and ordered my first Bo staff. I practiced nearly everyday, it started as exercise and confidence building, but eventually became catharsis and meditation. I can now confidently say that I have mastered each of these spins and the transitions between them. What was once brutish and choppy now flows like water. I owe my craft partially to you my friend. 🤝🌱

i don't go to a kwoon anymore because their membership is too expensive. So I now take TKD with my 13 year old, who also left after 5 years of CLF... we are having fun, working on our legs mostly but also the teacher has a weapons class in the summer in which we practiced with a Japanese Bo staff. It is shorter than the CLF staff and easier to spin. it's fun. Also we did Escrima Sticks ..I learned that part of the sticks moves are unique to Escrima but part is similar to CLF Double Cudgels (like.. the figure 8 ).. I showed them the flower and flower/ low sweeping block...we like sparring but I've noticed the young TKD junior blackbelts don't know what to do if you block a few kicks and then shuffle in quick with some fast and close punches to the chest, followed with some sau choi's. just fyi.. MEANWHILE I went back to the CLF school (my 17 year old is a brown sash there) for a Tai Chi push hands seminar from our Sifu (I still consider Sifu Martin my CLF sifu!) Maybe some day I will return; but I have notes on most of the forms I learned and practice parts of them occasionally (small plum blossom, small cross form, flute form, staff form, parts of double cudgels and broadsword...(mostly the flower and reverse flowers of those two), cane forms..wall bag...and the 24 Short Form taichi . HOW's your training Peter?

+René Henriksen I've been robbed at gunpoint twice, once in where I worked, once in my own home. My first fiancé was murdered in a car wreck by a drunk tractor trailer driver. I had a nervous breakdown that kept me in bed almost constantly for 7 months and took 2 years until I look someone in the eye again without cowering or freaking out. I could continue this list of fun = ) ... the point is.... anyone can do anything regardless what they have experienced. It's not what you have went through that defines you. It's having the courage to allow your self the time that it takes to let it go.

Mugger: I have a gun. The end. This is a nice circus trick but in a real live situation most of these movements are wasteful and useless. Using a staff like a baseball bat would be way more efficient. It would be very easy to make him drop the staff with a kick. His grip is very vulnerable because he is focused in coordination.
@peteradamson71344 жыл бұрын
@@wagnar I think the spins are a training exercise. They help you connect with the staff so it becomes an extension of your body. At the same time, they are improving your range of motion and, if you spin fast, it is a workout too. Just my guess. I am new to this. It is an interesting way to warm up before tai chi class.

i think what you mean is grip the stick mainly with your pointer finger and thumb and loosley grip with the rest of your fingers use the middle finger pointer and pinky to help to direct the staff in the direction u wish it to go and use the pointer and thumb to hold onto the stick this allows more flexibilty in your wrist

I have never seen Chuck Norris use a BO staff. in any movie or anywhere else. Or seen him do anything more than yellow belt techniques, in movies. Yet he is more famous as a MA, than so many others. Cult of personality, perhaps.

For the uppercuts at 2:47 and 0:55, you want to train with your hand(s) at different rotation points along the staff. Further towards one end will increase the amount of inertia in the staff, but also raise the difficulty. You should be able to make adjustments to the hand position while doing this technique, even one handed. Note that adjusting one handed is not recommended for application b/c it will create a moment of vulnerability where you can be disarmed, unlike two-handed where one hand can always keep a firm grip on the shaft as you shift grip position.

Would like to see those spins against a tire or a heavy bag. Not sure how much of the momentum you could pull through a target.
@AymaKon5 жыл бұрын
Not much... Most of those techs are for show or for a "proof of concept" (the elements needed to master the techs are present in conventional striking and blocking). Plus there's also forms/kata depending on what you're doing. For an actual fight you want to focus on footwork, movement, striking, and blocking. Not spins.
