Tbh, nukes don’t actually explode in a mushroom cloud shape. The shape of the cloud is a post-explosion effect caused by both the hot air around the point of explosion rising and the displaced air returning to the point of explosion and rising. The central column of air keeps rising as the air and particles lifted up earlier start losing their energy and falling out of the air. It is the same phenomenon with how people create smoke rings.

I worked with a company that make anti-tank warheads, and I was part of a team whose job it was to figure out how these things work and look in slow-mo, using software simulations. I cannot express the torrent of emotions a video like this conjures up in me! We had spend so many frustrating weeks and months testing, tweaking, testing, tweaking the software...just to get a 10th of the kind of information one could get by just watching the actual video footage in slow motion. What this video captures in a day's work would have our team many months to reproduce.

Kinda wild the company couldn't arrange for something similar with slow mo cams and go through the proper channels to get real explosives (especially if these youtubers can). I'd imagine a defense contractor would have, and probably should have, the connections and resources to test in a more controlled, scientific way. Was there a reason why they chose to go the simulator route instead?

@@ThePursuitofHappiness1988 A lot of high-speed camera techniques were originally developed with taxpayer funding specifically for this kind of thing (not just shaped charges, but explosive lenses and compression systems for nuclear weapons especially). But as you might imagine, as expensive as these modern high-speed digital cameras are, the "old-fashioned" techniques were many times more expensive still, and it would be difficult or impossible to get nice frame-by-frame sequences of the whole process like this

We've seen in GWOT - Iraq, copper plated shaped charges using HME (home made explosives) punch completely through Bradley reactive armor into the hull and take out infantry wearing L3 SAPI plates. My patrol once found a 10" shaped charge in Baghdad hidden in a pot hole in one of the freeway overpasses. Thank god we found it before they fired it into the underside of a HEMMET or MRAP. Fun fact: If you calculate relativistic mass increase for the shaped charge jet if it's 50 grams of copper at 6500 m/s to begin with, you get around 11.75 nanograms of mass increase due to its velocity. And if you think that's nothing as it contains the phrase "nano" be reminded that each of their frames is exposed for a time in the nanoseconds. Just a fun fact for y'all.
@TheOtherGuys2
@TheOtherGuys2 2 ай бұрын
It's hard to think of it as nothing when it involves something going so fast that it gets heavier instead of faster, in a way that's that close to a scale we can comprehend. Sure, CERN can hyper-accelerate a Proton and fractionally increase its mass, but the sheer force of acceleration at work here is orders of magnitude beyond that.
@IIIAnchani
@IIIAnchani 2 ай бұрын
@@TheOtherGuys2 You are correct, yet it's hard for people to grasp the speeds at which CERN collides particles at. Even 10% the speed of light is incomprehensible to the human mind. In the case of shaped charges, we can comprehend the speeds, especially thanks to scientific analysis of high speed videography like the one in this video. And given that the numbers for exposure time and relativistic mass increase were so beautifully aligned, I couldn't resist to sprinkle a little bit of scientific fun into the comments.

Fun Fact: _anything_ if struck hard enough, will emit light. Here are 4 ways it can happen! 1) Triboluminescence, generated when bonds in a material are broken when that material is scratched, crushed, or rubbed. 2) Fractoluminescence, generated when bonds in certain crystals are broken by fractures. 3) Sonoluminescence is the emission of light from imploding bubbles in a liquid (see Pistol Shrimp, it's also similar in principal to #4) 4) Incandescence due to adiabatic compression* (this can run a Fire Piston to start a camp fire, or, with more power, a diesel engine, or, with WAY more power, it can start Nuclear Fusion!) the 4th option is my favorite, and most pertinent here. when something is compressed, it takes it's heat with it. if you take a substance with any amount of heat, and condense it into a small enough area, it will increase the temperature, and if you do this enough, it'll glow hot!

They compromise by using copper powder (with a blend of tungsten) not to plug to hole with the slug. With a mathematically designed zirconium slug your looking at 1m of rock penetration from 1oz of HMX pressed. That would probably penetrate 6 inches of AR500 These things are designed to penetrate steel first (well pipe) then rock. The amount of design that goes into these shape charges (angle, thickness, shape, alloy composition (powder)) is immense. Great job! Fracking is done with high pressure water. The shaped charge is for perforating an oil well. Those little charges will have 10-14 grams of explosive in them and they are designed to blow a hole roughly the size of your index finger, 40 inches into solid rock. I was lucky and got to spend a day out testing perforating charges for an oilfield company. They are super cool and extremely efficient explosives. My guess is that if you placed one on the hood of a car, that the jet would come out the bottom of the oil pan.

This is why shaped penetrator rounds are so deadly. They used to take a 5gal bucket and place a copper disk inside with a few pounds of explosives. IEDs are very nasty. Awesome video. I wish you guys would make them a little longer I’m a huge nerd for this stuff and watching it in slow mo just tickles that itch.

Shape charge didn't shear the AR500 plate, it when through like a plasma jet from a plasma cutter. Having seen what shape charges can do to MRAPs in theatre, and the people therein contained, they are not something that's fun to think about every time you roll out of the wire. You learn to live with the mentality of "either I'm gonna getback safe, or it's not gonna be my problem anymore". Iraq 2010-11, when Russian RKG-3 grenades were being used quite a bit. A literal hand thrown, impact detonated, shape charge grenade.

Those small little flashes kinda remind me of the phenomena how ridiculous flimed with the two glass balls, but in this case the "bones" are tearing apart so quick with so much energy it is creating heat and light as a way to disperse some of that energy. Alternatively light from the explosion is just leaking through the micro fractures in the skull before it's obliterated

I LOVE the black and white... the clarity is amazing. When I was in photography waaaaay back in 1999, I always preferred the detail of black and white film. Fellas, this paired with the two colliding bullets, is some of the coolest shit I've seen.

To put that velocity of 30,000 fps in perspective, a tiny steel .177 BB from a childs BB gun only weighs 5.5 grains but would have 11,000 fts /lbs of energy at that velocity. The .50 BMG with 750 grains bullets makes about 13,000 ft/lbs. So yeah...🤯

Great video. This shows a lot of what's going on and what these charges are capable of. In the oilfield we can design these to do tons of different things. From going as deep as possible to making it stop at a specified number of plates while getting a consistent and specified hole size.

It was wild how with the copper disk charge, the entrance wound on the torso looked like a traditional exit wound from a large caliber rifle round, and the exit wound looked more similar to a traditional entrance wound. The flip on those is very intriguing.

EFPs like those used in fracking have specific qualities to them to be used at a certain standoff etc. What is very interesting are EFPs used in tank hunting sub-munitions that have a very very long standoff and characteristics baked into the EFP prior to detonation such as crimping for the copper etc. that give aerodynamic properties to the resulting penetrator. See the BLU-108 submunition as an example. Also if you can get your hands on some linear shaped charges that would be super neat to view on the high speed.

In the first war with Iraq…with the M1 Abrams first war footing deployment. One of the M1’s was hit by a shaped charge of some sort. The driver witnessed a loud bang behind him followed by a very thin ribbon of molten metal. It penetrated the Chobham laminated plate armor clean through. I believe that part of the lamination is depleted Uranium and some sort of polymer. But it beat it. Oddly enough the entire crew was un-injured. 😮

This was awesome! Next ya'll should set up some obstacles for the shaped charge to punch through before hitting the dummy. Maybe set up some hardened steel in the shape of a box to simuate a tank being hit with a shaped charge? It would be cool to see how effective they are in a more realistic application. 👍

What really blows your mind is that while the shaped charged velocity is insanely fast.... It still pales in comparison to the speed of light. Wild. Great job as always fellas. And, entertaining as hell. Next time, if you do three heads again, do a down-range view (to the left of the final head), so when the glass shoots through the last head, you get a nearly-direct view of the blast puncturing outward from the last head. That'd be a unique view. Just watch your camera placement. Lol

The AR500 plate shot really surprised me, albeit that I know very little about this manufactured charge. But being able to compress and propel copper like that is remarkable, it's no wonder that military complexes particularly love these types of detonation platforms for all sorts of mines and such even in such a small package. It genuinely reminds me of the size or circumference of those smart artillery shells that actually air burst and project targeting submunitions to shoot shaped charges on the roofs of vehicles.

Hey guys. I'm a ballistics Engineer for those types of oil field shaped charges. Just a little fun fact. We have charges at least half the size that can make it through 1 and sometimes even two plates of 3/8 inch thick steel. Hardness if steel plays a big role. But the power of shaped charges is insane.
