It’s interesting and impressive how the brain protects itself from trauma. You can see that the people who witnessed the incident seem more traumatized than he is because they remember everything. Whereas thankfully he does not. Extremely lucky to still be alive after something like this.
@blahorgaslisk7763Ай бұрын
Memories is one thing the brain will purge when it's been traumatized. Recently I fell down the stairs to the basement and I hit my head quite bad ton the concrete floor when I landed, or at least that's what we think happened. I remember starting to walk up the stairs, my next memory is looking up and realizing I'm not at home but in a hospital. Between these memories are about two weeks I can't remember anything from. Four days after I had fallen a friend came by as I hadn't answered the phone or been logged online. He managed to get in the house, which included finding and calling my sister who they had never met and only knew the first name off. There he found me on the upper floor lying in the door to the bedroom wrapped up in a bedcover. So I obviously had crawled up the stairs and into the bedroom where I pulled down the bedcover and rolled into it. He says I looked at him but I didn't answer or try to talk. So he called the ambulance and they got me to the emergency center. There they found that I had cracks in the skull, a broken collar bone, bleeding in the brain and blood cloths in the veins leading up to the head. But I lived. Then I spent more than a week before I suddenly woke up and was conscious. Before that I spoke in several languages, but mostly English which was a good thing as I only know two languages, my native tunge being Swedish and having learned English.in school. The French, German and whatever they thought I tried to use was just throwing out weird sounds like a kid playing at speaking a foreign language. Personally I have no memories of any of that. The full damage list included loosing hearing on my right ear as the cracks in the skull had ripped the nerves going to the ear off. I can still feel touches to the outer ear, but hearing and balance is totally severed. Other than that I got some problems with my language memory, I forget words. Or rather I know the word I want to use, but I can't remember how to say it or exactly what it is. I discovered that when discussing cortison with a doctor. I just couldn't get the word though I really knew what it was. The first time I managed to describe the effects of it and a once well know person who had used it to the degree that he got problems from it. Later I figured out that I had no problem saying hydro cortison, so I just thought that and cut out the hydro part and I got the word. Other than that I'm mostly recovered with intact memories of all of my life, but those two weeks, oh and a day lost to alcohol ten or twenty years back...

@@blahorgaslisk7763 wow, what a terrifying injury. I’m glad you were found and it’s probably for the best that you don’t recall much from that time. I’m sorry you had so many injuries and after effects, I’m glad you’re doing better now though. It’s amazing how resilient we can be.
@blahorgaslisk7763Ай бұрын
@@batacumba Yes sometimes we are incredibly resilient, and at other times something simple can cause terrible results. In my case I'm back on my legs, though with so bad sense of balance that I use a rollator when walking outside. Mean while a previous coworker had a bleeding in his brain when out walking. The lucky part was that the man taking his dog for a walk that saw him fall to the ground was a doctor with neurological specialization so he got very good care and had a good contact with this doctor. The bad thing was his memory was damaged and it was continuously growing worse. The doctor said that unfortunately it wouldn't stop or get better, ever. No he was doomed to loosing more and more of his memories for as long as he stayed alive. No attempt to hope for anything better. Raw but also totally fair by the doctor. I spent a month at part of the hospital where they worked with helping people with brain injuries to prepare for life with a disability. One of the patients there I called the Five Minute Man. He had a short term memory that was a bit more than five minutes long. Every day he discovered he was in a hospital and got anxious as tomorrow he had to be in Madrid where he would meet some customers. This was the start of every day for him the month I was there, and he had been there for three months before that. He was nice to talk to as long as you didn't expect him to remember talking to you before that. He had been hit when stepping out of his car after parking. The driver that hit him just stepped on the gas and disappeared leaving him on the road. As it happened in the middle of the city a lot of people were there and called for ambulance and the police so he got care almost immediately. Yet he got damage bad enough he couldn't form new long term memory and short term memories just got lost after five to ten minutes. And over the months he had been there it had only gotten worse and the doctors said it would continue to deteriorate even faster. So yes, I know I'm lucky. It just doesn't feel like that when I'm about to fall over if I look around to quickly and have to bring out the rollator when walking to the store. In my mind a rollator is still something that only really old people need. So having to use it feels wrong. I just have to think of how lucky I was that my friend managed to find the phone number to my sister so he could find the spare key and get in the house to find me. If he hadn't done that I would have died on the floor in a few more days.

I had a HORRIBLE car accident a few years ago. I needed 14 staples to the back of my head. To this day I dont remember it at all. Only being in the car, large gap, then suddenly I was in a helicopter. The brain absolutely protects itself from trauma. I would probably have a hard time driving after that accident but because I dont remember it at all, I am, for the most part, fine and able to drive without thinking too much about the accident

The fact that his carotid artery was not ruptured, his lower mandible was not torn off and his eyeballs were not forcefully ejected from their sockets are all entirely amazing. 3. The fact that his organs weren't catastrophically damaged by the shockwave and the shrapnel is just so utterly lucky. You, sir, had someone or something protecting you. If you recall, Kentucky Ballistics got his carotid torn apart from a .50 rifle exploding. This failure was far more energetic and likely to cause injuries incompatible with life. The thing that makes explosions lethal is when they're properly contained. No pressure build up = No energy. A majority of the boom (from the 70-80 or so grams of gunpowder that makes up the booster charge) went out the back (as per recoilless rifle design) and the rest saw uninterrupted expansion after the tube disassembled. The mass of his limb being in the way and his armor flying off likely absorbed enough energy to prevent serious lung injuries but the head wasn't as lucky, hence the brain injury.

As a former Fire Department training officer, with 25 years of experience, and as someone who understands how safety equipment is supposed to work, it is my opinion that the fact that you didn't have that chin strap secured probably saved you from getting your neck broken or worse. Safety headgear is mostly designed to deflect impacts and not take the full force of such impacts to the head. The angle of the forces that impacted the helmet you were wearing was unique in that the forces were thrust upon the helmet from below (rapidly expanding gases ) and not from above or laterally which is what you are usually trying to protect yourself from with a helmet. In the early 80's my Fire Department started using Cairnes "Philadelphia F.D." design helmets and when we noticed that there was a plastic tab on each underside of the helmet that captured the inner shell to keep it inside the outer hard shell of the helmet we were informed that the U.S. Navy had issued the same helmet to ship board fire fighters and that the reason the break away tabs were there was in case someone wearing these helmets wouldn't breaK their necks when they hit the water, if they fell from a ship, in an upright position. I'm glad that you are recovering and I wish you well my friend .

At time index approx 19:50, where you're discussing the failure of the booster and the sealing of the venturi and catastrophic pressure, it looks like your "guess" is on point. Something you didn't say or discuss directly is that you can see the warhead moving out of the front end of the launcher before EVER seeing any back blast exiting the venturi. If you look back at your previous video, you can see this in EVERY firing, it is clear, especially at the 30,000 fps segment, you see exit gases well before you see any gases escaping from the front opening and certainly long before there is any discernable warhead forward movement. This certainly supports the idea that a booster charge failure can potentially seal the venturi and prevent proper back venting of gases! Glad you survived, god speed in your continued recovery.

Is it possible that the ballistic gel dummy was too close to the exhaust preventing gases to escape aswell? Back Pressure and Damage: When the exhaust pipe is blocked, the high-pressure gases generated by the rocket motor have nowhere to escape. This leads to a significant increase in pressure within the launcher tube. The launcher’s structural integrity may be compromised due to excessive pressure, potentially resulting in damage or rupture.

Adam, I have no words after watching this, other than it wasn’t your time, and I am so glad you are recovering. I retired from the US Army in 2001 after 21 years and change. I was a 90mm RR main gunner, LAWS gunner, AT4, stinger gunner. In the early 80s we didn’t have the technology and KZbin we do now. I had no memory of getting blown up with a grenade that landed about 3 meters to my front left. It was about 2200 hours on a night mission, when we hit an ambush. I was prone, firing my weapon and never heard the grenade hit the ground. My last memory was feeling like I just took a huge hit like running full tilt into a brick wall, instantly followed by a bright flash. Back then we had the steel helmet with the helmet liner, but we never wore the chin strap, because if you were ever hit with a blast, the chin strap would not detach from the helmet, but the helmet would pull away with the chin strap ripping away the tissue of the anterior of your neck, possibly even creating a closed decapitation. Because I was mostly firing from the prone position, I escaped most of the shrapnel. I drifted in and out of consciousness, I couldn’t hear anything, I was told my left ear drum was blown, left eye orbital blowout fracture, what they call TBI now, but back then, the brain hit one side of my skull from the initial blast, then hit the other side of my skull when my head suddenly stopped moving when it met an immovable object (AKA: the earth). The injury known as a coup-contra-coup brain injury. I don’t know what size of hand grenade blasted me but I kept thinking in the hospital it wasn’t a regular grenade. I was later told it wasn’t a grenade at all, but the first round of the mortars used in support of the ambush. I’m 100% disabled now because of the harm we put ourselves in just to complete the mission. Seeing your accident with today’s technology capturing every millisecond, brought some of the foggy memory of that moment 41 years ago. I am so glad you are doing well. Thanks guys for sharing this, painful and emotional life changing event with us. Adam, you have a great support network, remember, we fans GY6 too!

That was excellent analysis. The booster charge splitting in two and blocking the exhaust port is EXACTLY what happens in experimental rocketry on a regular basis. MYTHBUSTERS had this happen when they attached rockets to a car and tried to jump it off a ramp. The rocket exploded because the propellant came apart inside the rocket, blocked the exit nozzle, pressure built up, and Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly (RUD) occurred. Very good analysis. Thanks for handling this in a mature and appropriate manner guys. Best wishes on your recovery
@nick481910 ай бұрын
I don't see where the exhaust gets plugged. It has massive amounts of propellant exiting. The only reason it stops, is because there is now a much larger and easier exit out of the big hole in the launcher. I believe the booster either overcharged, ignited too many charges when it started, or it just burned way faster than it should have. You can even see other parts of the steel bulging out before the welded panel blows. But the entire time, that back is letting out as much exhaust as it possibly can.

@@jonathanz.9675 the point still stands. Same as with KBs fifty that exploded because of some shady backyard ammo that was supposed to be military surplus SLAP. The welding introduced a weakspot like a blowoff-panel, yet it is debatable if the whole tube would have fragged him. You know, there is basically nothing behind the black powder charge, if the pipe isn't blocked it goes out the back. I've had 250mm fireworks shells that I made absolutely way too shit hot overcharged with fine BP. The shell was absolutely blasted out the tube in pieces, yet the 4mm Fiberglas tube took no damage.
