Thank you so much for posting this video. I built mine pretty close to yours and it works perfect. It was fun building and not that difficult. Everyone that has seen it thinks it is very professional. Keep doing videos, I enjoy watching them and getting ideas. After adding dust collection, it made my shop very clean and dust free. Thanks again.

I just ordered Shapeko xxl and it's on its way. Just received a notice that it will be here on Tuesday the 23rd. After watching all these videos. I am sticking with yours. Thank you so much and GREAT job. I hope you post up any additions to it. As far as a clean work area just means it's just an area. A messy area is a area that is used. OH! I do have to agree. The sped-up footage sounds really were loud but that is why everyone has there own volume control.

I really appreciate your videos on the Shapeoko! I have been looking at getting a CNC unit for some time now. I have looked at various units costing 4x the price of the Shapeoko and have now ruled these units out. Currently, I believe I will go with the XXL model, for price difference I believe this is best choice. Thanks much for your service, very much appreciated! My father spent close to 30 years in Army, 3rd Armored Cav retiring as O6 back in 92. He had few tours in Vietnam with the 11th ACR. Keep the videos coming they are great! Any advice and lessons learned for us purchasing unit is greatly appreciated!

Great video I cant wait to build mine for my xxl. One thing a Radius is a straight line from the center to the circumference of a circle or sphere. A angle is the space (usually measured in degrees) between two intersecting lines or surfaces at or close to the point where they meet. Just giving you a hard time, thanks for your service.

yeah yeah yeah we can't all be mathematicians. You say angle I say radius. hahaha. Sometimes I watch my own videos, and realize I say some of the dumbest thing. They sound good at the time.

I just purchased the XL & it will arrive sometime next week. So before it arrives I'd like to build my own enclosure. Yours is one of the best I've seen thus far. Not gonna lie I plan to use your template as my guide. I think I'll increase the dimensions a few inches so I can install some soundproofing foam inside the enclosure

This is one of the most advanced DIY setups I have seen so far. The monitor especially makes it futuristic/high tech. One day I would like to have a shop similar to this but with all concrete for welding safety and climate control. And the front would have transparent, pneumatic "Star Trek" doors that open automatically (to really make it overkill).

Us in the small space club need to put our machines in enclosures. I am just pissed at myself I didn't do it when I first got the machine. If it does nothing else it keeps the dust down even if you don't have any type of dust extraction. I'm still waiting on my dust boot unfortunately.

Nice enclosure ! Just order my XXL, am very excited to get it. Got any tricks and tips to share apart from the enclosure which I love. If you do much cutting of big sheets I have a nice alternative idea for you if you can use your driveway as I have a very small basement shop and sheets are just to stinken big and heavy for me to handle. @stufftokeepyouentertained21686 жыл бұрын
I thought about it, but after much thinking I decided I didn't need one. The switch for the machine is on the outside. I just have to mount it to the front. Right now it's just hanging on the side. It's the stock switch that comes with the machine. May not be as easy to push as a large red button, but it works good enough.

Curious, now that you have used it for almost a year, do you like the direction of the swing of your doors? I love the cabinet idea and I'm going to build one when my machine shows up. I have to "share" the garage with a car and family stuff so I want to do everything I can to confine the dust and also keep the noise down. I had been thinking about something similar but with the doors swinging up and out of the way. I was concerned that with the doors open, it could get in your way if you were trying to move around while loading the cnc.
@stufftokeepyouentertained21686 жыл бұрын
I have no complaints about the swinging doors. The way my shop is set up I have enough room to back up to open them. I have seen several folks doing the "clamshell" type lid design with the gas shocks and such, and I like that idea as well however I wanted to keep it really simple. The other drawback to the top opening is my TV/Monitor is on top, and would block the top from opening. I have my dust collection fully set up now, and plan to make a video explaining it soon. I keep saying that and then life happens before you know it BOOM five months have passed and no new videos. I'll add one more thing. The doors open up completely 180 degrees to there is no obstruction from them.

Do you know the decibel drop from before and then after? That is the real test of the enclosure's success. It will also help save your own hearing. There are apps for your phone or you can buy a sound pressure meter. My wife is in Speech/Audiology, she always make me wear my hearing protection. I think she mostly wants to make sure I can hear her, but I know it is better for my hearing.
@stufftokeepyouentertained21686 жыл бұрын
I'll download an app, and try it later. I'll respond with the results. Any specific distance you want me to test, or just right at the machine?
@benbrubaker78966 жыл бұрын
I would measure the sound at the normal operating distance. The pressure increases exponentially and the allowable amount of time (exposure) decreases rapidly. Here is a basic chart cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/897/1*M27I9CSREJrsu0wL8jH8nA.png I saw your router listed somewhere as 79.5 dB. OSHA recommends limited exposure starting at 90 dB.
@stufftokeepyouentertained21686 жыл бұрын
Ok so I did a quick test using a free db meter app. I didn't cut any wood as I don't have anything going right now, but just the router with the doors open standing where I normally stand a foot or so in front of the machine I got 70-75db. When I closed the doors I got about 50db. So I suppose it would be the same for the sounds of it actually cutting as well. Cuts it about 20-25db. I realize there are differences in loudness when it comes to pitch and tone and all that, but hey I'm just a part time shop rat that's way above my head. I know this with it closed I can hear myself think, and talk on the phone while still in the same room. Hope that answers your question.
@Gnew1116 жыл бұрын
I am a huge fan of my hearing as well! Even with heavy insulation inside the box, the common window material options will allow a substantial amount of noise to escape no matter how you break it down. The only thing I can think of is to create a double pain window out of plexi to keep cost down or invest in more robust see-through materials.

I watched this when you first posted it, and am getting ready to build mine. You mentioned that you were going to add dust collection. If you've done that yet, have you found a need for some vent holes to provide incoming air for the vacuum to suck out?
@stufftokeepyouentertained21686 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I have not had the time to do the dust system yet. I got a dust boot, but haven't had time to even put it on yet. I don't think I will need to drill any ventilation. I drilled 2 1" holes for my wiring, and I think that will be enough to negate any negative pressure.

Hey just discovered your channel and its been making me want a CNC. What are your thoughts on the shapeoko? Anything other than the unit, homing switches, router and bits, and maybe a z-probe that you'd consider a must-buy for a newbie? Ive done a lot of 3d printing but CNC will need a bigger area I lacked until now.
@stufftokeepyouentertained21687 жыл бұрын
I love it. After watching reviews of other similar priced machines I think the Shapeoko is the way to go. As far as what to buy my suggestion would be Software. I have been using Vcarve Pro. A little pricey, but worth the money. There is some free stuff out there to include Carbide Create, but I couldn't like them no matter how hard I tried. You can download Carbide Create any time for free, and try it out prior to getting a machine. Other than that the rest of the stuff you can make on your own, hold downs, wasteboard, enclosure, etc.

(the stuff Im looking at is 2mm - thinner than 1/8 inch - btw. so straight away isn't as decent as your 1/4 inch)

I know your comment is 2 years old but for whoever is considering this today, you can always go plexiglass on the inside for safety purposes and regular glass on the outside to cut cost. But yes, a sealed air pocket would help further reduce noise.

Haven't read all of the comments so i'm not sure if its already been suggested or not but lining the inside walls of your enclosure with an acoustic deadening material like 1" Ridged fiberglass panels covered in an open weave fabric or Sonex acoustical foam panels would significantly decrease the decibel level outside the box even more. It is what they use in recording studios and large public spaces to acoustically deaden the room.
@giantpune5 жыл бұрын
This is a common misconception. When talking about soundproofing, there are 2 main goals. One is to minimize sound bouncing inside around a room, such as a recording studio. The second one is to minimize sound passing out of a room into another room, or in this case, sound escaping the enclosure. The soundproofing tiles you mentioned would help to cut down on sound bouncing around inside the enclosure. But I don't think the CNC or the router care if its loud inside. If you want to improve the sound insulation and keep the noise from escaping to the shop, you want thick, heavy, stiff walls. 1" thick MDF would work much better than 1" foam, and come in at a fraction of the cost.
