Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate a number of rows. My first attempt was disastrous. Now I feel confident to try again

KZbin comes to the rescue once again because this is EXACTLY what I was seeking! Your instructions are clear and concise, unlike the pattern from which I am working. Thank you for your help - I can now finish my cardigan.

Excellent demonstration. I wanted to add a shawl collar to a patten that just has a button band the same width all the way around. Your demo is perfect for my needs and I can see it will be really easy to do. Thank you so much. Also, I really love this chunky sweater. I live in Florida and it's usually not cold enough for something like that, but I am thinking about making it anyway, even if I only wear it a handful of times per year that is a beautiful sweater and the pattern is very reasonably priced.

Thanks so much for explaining why this is done, and then showing how to do it, so clearly. I was really confused at this point in my pattern. Now, I'm finishing up this special sweater!

hi and thank you for the video, it is very helpful! I was wanting to add a Nehru collar to a triangle shawl. Can you point me in the right direction please?
@fionamorrisdesigns17988 жыл бұрын
+Julie Day Hi Julie, I'm not exactly shore how I would do this as a Nehru collar is a different shape to a shawl collar. It is a straight standing collar usually applied to a round neckline. It could be knitted in garter stitch which will give a flat fabric that wont curl or it could be knitted in a stocking stitch fabric which will need to be doubled over (like a hem) to make it stand flat. The top edge of a triangular shawl is usually flat unless you have made the shawl a crescent shape so I don't know how well this type of collar would fit onto a flat rather than rounded neckline shape. I haven't seen this collar used in this way on knitwear so I can't point you to a pattern, sorry.

Lovely video! I am making a sweater almost identical to your sweater. The pattern does not call for any short row shaping at the back of the neck, but I have found that many others who knitted the sweater suggest doing a bit of short row shaping. My question is, do I knit the short rows last, as in the last rows before the bind off? Or can I do the short rows and then continue on knitting a few rows before the bind off? Or does it matter where I place the short the rows? Thanks in advance! :)

excellent! I would have liked to see you make the collar deeper. How do you start making the short rows again?
@fionamorrisdesigns17986 жыл бұрын
Hi Jill, Having knitted over all the stitches you will need to knit another row (or 3 rows) over all the stitches and then repeat the short row sequence again exactly as worked the first time through. Hope that helps

Thanks so much! I'll try it later on today!

I have been watching our video and I have made a sweater with a shawl collar but the collar is too short. Is there a way to add to the collar to make it deeper. I would like to add about 4 or so more inches. If there is a way can you show me. Thanks

Is there any way of avoiding the holes that appear when doing this in garter stitch?

Great video and informative

There shouldn't be any holes if you are using wrap and turn to link the stitches between rows. There may be some slight irregularity in the fabric at each turn point. In the video I demonstrate both picking up the wrap as you work the wrapped stitch and just knitting the wrapped stitch. There are other methods of short row knitting including the German Double Stitch and Japanese short rows. You may find one of these methods leaves less of a mark.

I'm struggling with a shawl collar done in K2, P2 rib. It would be most helpful if you would prepare a video showing how to deal with the wrap and turns on ribbing. I've tried several methods and am trying to achieve a nice look on the side of the rib collar that will be facing out.
@fionamorrisdesigns17988 жыл бұрын
+Mary Algar Hi Mary, sorry to take so long to reply. You can shape a shawl collar in k2 p2 rib with short rows but you need to be aware of the wraps (turning points) and look to see if they are going to be visible or not. If they are likely to be visible (usually around the knit stitch) you need to work the wrap with the stitch it is around to make sure it doesn't show on the visible side of the collar. I have been very busy for the last couple of months and will be so for at least another month but after that I will try to film a demo of working a shawl collar in k2 p2 rib.

+Fiona Morris Designs Hi Fiona and thanks for your reply. I did finally get it to work and look good. After consulting a few different sites, and practising on swatches, I have learned and can share that you need to handle the wrap in this way: If the stitch before your wrap and turn is a PURL - flip your workin yarn to the back, slip stitch from left to right needle, flip the yarn in front again and then put the slipped stitch back on the left needle, then turn your work and work that side of the work. Conversely, if the stitch before a wrap and turn is a knit, flip working yarn to front of work, slip stitch from left to right needle, flip working yarn back to the back of your work, then put the slipped stitch back on left needle, and turn work. And yes, you are correct, I ended up working the wraps with the wrapped stitch by following the method nicely shown on www.verypink.com website. Thank you again for your reply and I hope this helps other knitters struggling with wrap and turns on ribbing. I am finally happy with the shawl collar on the toddler sweater I'm working on.

+Mary Algar Hi Mary, thank you for your reply explaining how you worked your short rows in rib. In principle I agree with what you have written but I always prefer to slip the stitch that is to be wrapped to the right needle before moving the yarn rather than moving the yarn and then slipping the stitch. When working in a rib pattern once you have moved the yarn to the opposite side from where it started you slip the stitch back to the left needle and move the yarn between the needles to the correct side to continue working once the knitting has been turned.

Is knitting two more stitches standard? Or what.
@fionamorrisdesigns17986 жыл бұрын
Hi Doreen, With a shawl collar you usually want to add width more quickly than height so knitting two or three more stitches generally works well, but it does depend on the length of the collar and the extra height you want. It is usually better to repeat the sequence a second time to give the collar more depth than to reduce the number of stitches worked after the w&t point. Hope that helps.

Egads. I just don't get it. The short row process keeps confusing me. How do you know when to switch those markers? I've seen other videos on the same subject that incorporate charts...and that's really intimidating. I'm not an engineer.
@fionamorrisdesigns17987 жыл бұрын
Hi Susan, the stitch marker marks the point at which you worked the wrap and turn. In this particular example of short row knitting you are working a longer row each time. The pattern tells you to knit to the marked stitch and then knit e.g. 3 more stitches before working the next wrap and turn. If you are using a stitch marker that goes on the needle you knit up to the marker, remove the marker and then knit the additional stitches, wrap and turn replacing the stitch marker at the new position before working the next row. If you are using locking stitch marker, work the number of stitches past the marked stitch, wrap and turn, remove the locking stitch marker and replace it at the new wrap and turn stitch. I hope that helps.
