Well, Bill Walton doesn't rank among those greats, according to Shaq, so over the years, when Walton has used his platform to criticize O'Neal ... Shaq has fired back. At times, it's gotten pretty beefy.

I just want to remind people that Bill Walton did not just 'sit at the end of the bench' in Boston when they won the '86 championship. He played 80 games during the regular season and 16 games during the playoffs, 19 minutes per game during the regular season and 18 minutes per game during the playoffs. Bill Walton also won the 6th man trophy during that very same season.

Yeah, they definitely underplayed how good he was for that Celtics team....he actually took a great, championship team, to a new level. Things don't always show up in stats....if you watched that team Walton could seal up the paint on defense and when he was in the ball movement and flow of the offense was a thing of beauty.

Exactly, I mean the dude was 7ft tall in the 70s where these guy were pretty much forced to play through all sorts of injuries, its no wonder he was only able to fully play 2 seasons of his career and won both a FMVP and a Reg MVP in both those years. Like Dwight Howard was a real fan of Shaq, had him as his idol and modelled his play after him, and when people pointed some similarities and said the word "superman", Shaq just went ballistic on the dude, taking away from whatever he did. Javale was similar too, Shaq just went after the guy for being a big that wasn't a star like him. It feels kinda sad actually, imagine getting into the league to have your idol bash you constantly and you're not even that bad.

Shaq was one of the most unstoppable players... for about 8 or 9 years and his lack of growth (and willingness to grow) kind of produced the super ugly decline (the last 8 years) at the end of his career. I remember just before Kobe died , this was after that one on one video they did where they buried the hatchet, Kobe said that if Shaq had worked out the way he did they would have won 12 rings together. Then Shaq got pissed and started posting a bunch of pics of himself destroying people in the paint saying "Does this look lazy?" Kobe's answer to it was "No. It looks...dominant." I love Shaq. He brought 3 rings to the Lakers and was the most dominant force in the NBA when he was at his peak. That being said his refusal to work out and watch his weight WAS the reason that he and Kobe fell apart, even though he also called Kobe the "greatest player on the planet" during that same period. Kobe gets endless hate for a number of things but the break up with Shaq is key among them. Perhaps this beef with Walton will have people see Kobe's side of the beef with a little more clarity. (I realize I put Kobe and beef together... I think I'll have steak tonight.)

Walton won a rebounding title, a block title, and had two 1st team all-defense selections. Shaq has a total of (checking notes, oh right) 0 for all of those things. Also, Walton matched Shaq's MVP total, which is understandable for how shortened his prime was, but not understandable for Shaq, really. In fact, it's downright pitiful for someone who played so long with his physical gifts. So Bill did some things Shaq never did, which are the hallmarks of all the greatest centers. (Which other of the greatest centers never won a rebound or a block title, and never made 1st team all-defense?) Walton's team won four straight against Kareem's Lakers (when Kareem was league MVP), and then four straight against Dr. J's 76ers (after going down 0-2 in Philly). Shaq is tied for being swept the most times in NBA playoff history.

“You are the common factor in all of your failed relationships.” I love that quote! But the psych/major social worker in me has to point out how it’s an incorrect way to think about relationships. Sometimes when a relationship fails, you share the blame with the other party. This is of course the most common. Sometimes it truly is ALL your fault, you did something unforgivable. And on the opposite end, sometimes you do nothing wrong, and the other party screws up royally. So, saying “you’re the common factor in all of your failed relationships with other humans” is technically true, but it’s true by default. YOUR relationship can’t EXIST without YOU being a factor. So it’s “technically” true but doesn’t stand up to the most basic logical argument. Fun to say tho.

I read Phil Jacksons book and understand Shaqs psychology super well because I had a teammate who went really far and almost touched the NBA and he had the same exact mentality. It's like a switch in his head where he goes from generally nice and well meaning to "break you down" mode. I remember watching our AAU B-Team essentially and our other center was having a good game, and all of the sudden my boy's got stank face and hes like "dont compliment that boy for nothing he aint shi ima have to break that boy down"

Walton's inclusion on the list is mostly a nod to his absolute peak. In those 18 months in the late 70's he legitimately was the best player in the league. Absolutely insane on the court and the first person to be better on the court than the godlike Kareem at the time. Sad he was never able to keep it up, but because those heights are so hard to reach, he's given credence.

He's good on TNT at making the telecast fun, he's actually okay and quite good at times discussing more how to players should conduct themselves on the court, stand up for themselves or one another, but like you said, finer points of the game, lazy as they come. He's more of a fun personality to have on tv and not really an analyst.

One problem with O'Neal is that he either doesn't understand eras, injuries and rule changes or he willfully ignores them. I f he played in the 50s and 60s he would have fouled out of every game unless he learned not to knock other players down with his shoulder, elbows and butt. He would have ended up a Willis Reed type of player, good but not great. O'Neal avoided major injury for most of his career. This is a combination of things but often mainly luck. In his era the rules were changed because defense was too dominant. Fouls, traveling and use of hands were allowed to a greater extent. This doesn't mean that O'Neal would not have done well in any era but that it would have been very, very different for him. He needs to think first, speak second, not the other way around.

Shaq is one of the most impactful big men ever, his resume is incredible. He’s done a TON of generous stuff off the floor too. And he’s also consistently been a bully. He spends some of his time knocking others down, rather than building his own achievements up. He always says he’s the master marketer - and the fact we talk about him confirms he gets people talking. But he gets people talking about him in a negative way. If he’s worried about his legacy on the floor being forgotten as other greats have also been minimised or forgotten, it’s totally understandable. But hounding people only makes people remember him negatively.

Shaq would've definitely gotten at least a few more healthy, prime-formed seasons had he controlled his weight. His Orlando shape was ideal for him; this whole thing about him reaching his prime with the Lakers thanks to the weight gain is misleading, considering he could've focused on strength training and muscle mass rather than fat and gotten comparable or better results with far less overall mass. There's no magic in this world; no person can healthily carry so much weight while jumping, sprinting, and getting hit for hours daily.

It has to be said however that Bill Walton's 1986 comeback was a catalyst to the Celtics winning the championship that year. I think most people who truly understand the basics of center play would agree that few centers have ever embodied the all-around skill set that Walton possessed. Shaq is often funny, but also many times just a hardheaded monster of a man who bullied his way to success. He was so big and so strong he rarely ventured from more than 7 feet from the basket. He is a bit insecure. I'll take the other guys any day over him. Akeem was another marvelous center with amazing athletic ability and a great persona, always smiling.

I may be too young to speak on this, but for me Bill Walton deserves to be on that list of top 10-15 greatest centers to lace up. 6000 points and 2 all stars are unbelievably low. Seeing him play, you know he definitely had that talent and ability to be that kind of guy and I bet if he'd played even a decade of healthy basketball he'd have 9 all-stars, 2 mvps, at least 20k points and hopefully more rings.
