When he was a true superstar, before he left the Lakers, Shaq was well known for his defense. Like, in an age when people weren't shooting that many 3s, he was well known for his ability to show on pick and rolls and then recover to the basket, over and over. There weren't that many bigs that could do it like he did and there were obviously none as big as him. And he was definitely known as a shot blocker. The act of emphatically blocking a shot into the 10th row was referred to as "Shaq'ing." Maybe Barkley doesn't have memories of being blocked by Shaq, but O'Neal was a load on both ends of the court, until he got too heavy and out of shape, and then he became a defensive liability against certain teams. He was always an impossible player to stop from scoring though.

Every championship team plays great defense. That's why Nash's Suns couldn't get past 2nd round even with the best record in the league cause they are all offense, no defense. That's why the Pistons won the championship eventho they score 70 points per game cause they are an all-time great defensive team. Funny how they beat Shaq too.

When we talk of centers, Hakeem is the most often overlooked. I love shaq, and his low post moves were great. Hakeem had better low post moves and could move to the top of the key and still shoot. Shaq was a great low post defender, Hakeem was a better low post defender and if he found himself defending a PG by the 3 point line, he was still great. In today's game, Shaq would still be great, but they would pick and roll to bring him out of the paint... Hakeem was faster, had better footwork, better defense, and better shooting. Hakeem would be BETTER in today's game.
