That peak Shaq from 1998 to 2002 was unlike anything I’ve seen in my lifetime. We are talking about teams legitimately carrying extra bigs just to foul him. In 2002 the league added Def secs and brought back zone which had been banned since 1947 and Shaq was at the forefront on why. I’ve never seen a player with as many as 3-4-5 defenders surrounded around them like the big fella. David Stern was commissioner from 1984 to 2014 and he said he never had every team calling to complain about one players dominance like Shaq. Where ever you rank him among centers is up to you but peak Shaq is as good as any of them.
@SDesWriter5 ай бұрын
Actually peak Shaq was allowed to run over people with no foul calls (and was fouled with not enough foul calls), had low assists and was a selfish player. I'd take Joker over him in a heartbeat. Shaq's best playoffs ever (which he more or less did twice) was equivalent to Joker in scoring (with a higher FG%) and rebounds (2 more), but Joker also had 8 more assists per game. That's an extra 16-24 points he generated with his passing. So if he has the same basic numbers except quadruple the assists, how was Shaq better?

Shaq got to play with 1 of the greatest perimeter players ever, and people never mention this compared to someone like Hakeem. What does it do for a legit big man to have a guy on the perimeter pulling defenders to him? Shaq got to experience that every single season, he played with Nash when Nash was at his peak, Dwyane Wade, penny hardaway, and Kobe. Amongst others
@SDesWriter5 ай бұрын
It really was a monumental flaw for a big man whose only real skill (for at least the middle and last portion of his career) was banging into people and trying to get as close to the basket as possible. When the other team can foul you and expect 0 or 1 points out of the offensive possession, you're making yourself useless when you should be at your best. It hurt Wilt as well. Then you look at a guy like Joker and he can play and be effective anywhere on the court in clutch time, but he's especially good near the basket and if you foul him, he's even better. 18-18 against the Warriors for Christmas.
@shak95584 ай бұрын
@@IsaacMSingleton1Agreed. It's why I'd never consider Shaq as a top 5 in my opinion. I can name 10 other players who were much better and versatile on defence, can name 500 others who could actually shoot. In terms of centers he's probably 6th for me.
@IsaacMSingleton14 ай бұрын
@@SDesWriter yes and to add Shaq would get into foul trouble due to bad defensive decisions, and 1 or 2 offensive fouls per game. In crunch time Shaq was unreliable, and that's a gigantic flaw. Even wilt, with his free throw shooting issues, was a great defensive player and could play at any pace he needed to. Wilt also played in an era where initiating contact with a stationary defender was a charge, you had to shoot over guys or use the hook shot due to the rule. Shaq was allowed to dislodge defenders consistently, which is a charge. Looking back LeBron gets all the blame for the rule change, but truthfully the league started this BS with Shaq. While he had great footwork and touch, he still was allowed to displace guys due to his size alone, which would have been a foul in wilts era. Plus Shaq was out of shape while wilt is a historically great ATHLETE, not just basketball player.
@IsaacMSingleton14 ай бұрын
@@shak9558 Shaq had some nice footwork and touch close to the basket, his issue was he got lazy and the league allowed him to barrel through defenders cause of his size. Similar to LeBron, both got so pampered by the league their games got worse, but their stats stayed the same cause they were protected by officials. If he would have been a hard worker and dedicated to getting better, Shaq would have been this eras wilt. A 7 foot freak of nature, remember Shaq used to run the point at times and had some nice passing, he had athleticism, power, finesse, but he got used to being a bully.

Young shaq Vs prime olajuawon, can’t say he beats him if he never faced the best version of him
@RJ-xh4xb4 ай бұрын
Look at their overall head to head...Shaq has more victories over Olajuwon. If you're just looking at the 1995 Finals, The Magics lost to the Rockets, but Shaq put up the same stats as his regular season, so it's not like he was "stopped". Besides, that was 23yr old Shaq, only in his 3rd year in the league and 1st time in the Finals, understandable the young Magics would choke against the Seasoned, Primed, Defending 1994 NBA Champions the Houston Rockets. But look at Shaq's and Olajuwon's overall career stats, Shaq's has had the better career. More Finals MVP, more championshipa, more scoring titles, more all-star appearances, more all-star MVPs, higher ppg, higher rebs...played longer, has had better contract...is one of the richest NBA players ever....career-wise, Shaq's is just thar much better than Hakeem's.
@Romans8-94 ай бұрын
@@RJ-xh4xb Shaq played with Kobe and Dwayde. Hakeem had Drexler. To say he's better than Hakeem after getting torched by him 4-0 in NBA finals is a bit arrogant. Also, you are wrong on your stats. Hakeem was all around a better player, Shaq was a marginally better scorer but Hakeem had triple Shaq's steals. Hakeem had more blocks and more rebounds. Shaq also sucked badly from the FT line.
@peterguidry60843 ай бұрын
@@RJ-xh4xbthat is very deceitful. Truth is, it is tale of 2 halfs. Nah, Wilt would murder Shaq and any big that ever played. A while back I stumbled onto this 6 min video called the Unstoppable shot or fadeway Wilt Chamberlain or something like that. Wilt has more than any center to this day from strength, athletic ability you name it except shooting long range but his mid-range game is killing everybody including Mj cause he’s doing it on hard rims and at 7 feet stronger than everyone, more athletic than everyone it wouldn’t matter who was in front of him. They say he damaged dudes for real dunking on them. Looking at the vid he’s a bigger, much stronger, much more athletic, better shooting Hakeem except mixed with Shaq. Shaq tries to use most dominant cause he knows he can’t say best and when he does say most dominant he knows he needs to mention Wilt. Wilt was doing the Dirk before Dirk. I’m not saying this to debate or change minds but check that video out and while we can say against less talent with him being 7ft, stronger than everyone including Shaq, by far a better athlete than anyone that’s ever played it wouldn’t matter who’s in front of him cause he’s getting that shot off. Better touch in the mid-range than everyone and on hard rims. It doesn’t take away from Shaq being a truly dominant force but Wilt has more than Shaq offensively, defensively and even led the league in assists one year just cause he could. I’ve always known of Wilt but this video was eye opening. He’s Shaq and Hakeem combined with better touch, better D? better athlete and stronger
