Thanks so much for responding but no I play the permiter and the shot I’m talking about is like a shot without fully rotating through just shooting almost as if your doing chest fly. Sorry that was super confusing but I can link a video of the side arm I’m talking about if you need.

I do love that backhand since I've learned it. I can get away with it a few times and then the defender leaves me open for easier shots. I have caught several defenders who swam their face in my elbow though, is that something I should watch out for or is that the defender's responsibility?

If you’re trying to shoot and the defender sticks his face in there then I would say it’s the defenders fault. If you’re aiming for his face or going out of your way to make contact then I would say that’s crossing the line. You have a right to your shooting motion. I recommend defenders put their hand on the shooters tricept so they don’t get hit in the face.

What should the off hand be doing, is it sculling to get up or is it helping the body rotate?

As you step out for the ball with your hip and good arm it should naturally counterrotate and assist with your step out. I wouldn't focus too much on it, most students I coached didn't have an issue with the off arm. Hope that helps.
