Second ever set to have Planeswalkers, and the FIRST ever set to have Mythics. Very important set in Magic, and definitely had its hand in leading Magic into its modern form. Good to see the set again.

This was the era when I tried to get into Standard while in college. I wasn't successful at all, but it was still fun. Just a few things: --The high colored casting costs were basically supposed to lock you into a certain main color, I think, and this is reflected in the 5 Ultimatums for each different shard, where there is one color that requires three mana, and then after that there's 2 mana each for the ally colors, totaling 7 mana. --Blightning was the king of bling -- a super staple common in Jund. --This was also the era where the 3 ally color combos got their names: Jund, Esper, Grixis, Naya, Bant. --I think the uncommon 3-color lands were about $1 and continued to be that value for a while. Not sure about now. --Getting a planeswalker in a pack was definitely a big deal. Rudy's not lying there. --The art style in this era was different, but already it was mostly digitally produced. Of course the artists had a style guide to adhere to... but I think we all really miss actual paint, right? Back then I played a sub-par Jund deck that used a single copy of 10th edition Crucible of Worlds to fetch with the Jund Panorama over and over, and at that time that was considered "innovative." hahahahaha XD

Loved this set, played magic a lot in these days, had a sweet naya zoo deck with wild nactl, wholly thoctar, and Ajani from this set. I remember thinking 3 mana for a vanilla 5/4 was out of control and super powerful w wholly thoctar back then, my how times have changed

List of 1sts in Shards of Alara: -Mythic Rarity. The MR slot *LITERALLY* started in this set -3 color theme. There is a reason every white/blue/green that has & will ever be built is called "Bant [whatever]" -Artifacts of color. Every single artifact ever printed ever was colorless/had no color. Then Esper said "Hey. New rules guys." -The trend/rule that stapled Planeswalkers to the MR level. The OG 5 'walkers, which premiered in the *Lorwyn* set, were all Rare slot cards. But, again, MR started here. So MR was made for 'walkers.....until *War of the Spark* smashed that tradition to itty bitty bits!
