I built one of these a few years ago when it 1st came out, on the tp link wifi client/router that ran open-wrt. It is great while camping off the grid. Plug it into one of those 10,000 miliamp/hr 5V batteries, and leave at base camp. Everyone can post msg’s to the board, share pics, and chat from tent to tent, or tent to camp fire. Put it up in a tree with a high gain antenna, and it’s good for a quarter mile depending on where you are. Really useful! (Almost forgot to mention, even non tech savy folks can connect to it with their android or iphone, and use the built in features with their mobile browser of choice!)

That sounds so cool! I did think of the usefulness of bringing a network into the outdoors

Does it support video transfer? Since I was looking forward to build one ☝️?
@folkishappalachian68274 жыл бұрын
@@NullByteWHT its actually what I want to do, keeps camp site updated at all times, what antenna or little wifi card should I use to get very long range, especially with instruction with trees? I may want to hook it up to a battery pack for hunting as well, so the lads and I know eachothers location, sure hand held walkies would work, but this is a chance to learn tech, something personally that I was never good at
@folkishappalachian68274 жыл бұрын
I was thinking for mobile, doing something like the ammo can solar pack, or ammo can raspberry mobile ham radio home made kit, but with this instead, yet still with decent range
@folkishappalachian68274 жыл бұрын
The key advantage over an sdr mobile ammo can pi and this in an ammo can pi, is that you're not FCC broadcasting, means no ham radio license, and no one listening in trying to find all your best hunting spots. Like sending screen caps with draw on markings on Google earth securely

I am in the process of developing a much improved piratebox system myself, but I do have a pointer for you: The Pi Zero W's onboard antenna is functional, but not really ideal - compromises are made to achieve such a small space. It is possible to fit an external antenna on to the Pi Zero W (Or other Pis), though - the designers left the required socket space on the PCB, just unpopulated. This will substantially boost the range of your piratebox. There's a catch: It requires some incredibly delicate soldering work. My own prototype piratebox uses a Zero W too, but it is intended to also incorporate an element of mesh networking - so you can scatter them around and they will link up to share their files and message boards.
@NullByteWHT6 жыл бұрын
this sounds really cool! where are you documenting this? If you're on twitter, I'd love to follow it.
@vylbird80146 жыл бұрын
@@NullByteWHT At the moment I am documenting it poorly. Give me another day, I'll come up with a bit more for you.
@vylbird80146 жыл бұрын
Ok, almost done. Been fiddling with it much of the day, working out bugs and improving things. Still no mesh functionality because I need more hardware, but the foundation for it is in place. The hard part is the distributed forum. What exactly are you looking for in a piratebox? So far I have a functional piratebox image which you can just dd onto a 64GB SD card and stick in a Pi Zero W. If you have an external USB wireless adaptor it'll switch to using that by default.

found a cool tutorial while browsing where you can actually turn your pi into a fingbox, different from an antivirus it focuses on protecting your actual network and it will sync with the app. So you can keep an eye on things from a far , and also use it as an attendance so you can see whose in your house and when. What can I use to make ascii banners in the terminal with nicer fonts, usually I will just use 'figlet' because its easy, but I want something a little less generic.?

sure the project is a few years old now, i thought of it because I saw him use fing as a command. There was an updated post last year but go here www.fing.io/fingkit-sdk-downloads/ grab the cli tool and create an account. Then follow these steps hopefully it will still work. Apparently the cli tool is availible on almost all platforms now, you will see when you visit the link. 1. sudo dpkg -i (there are a bunch of different architectures in the zip file so install the correct one) 2. Type: sudo apt-get install libpcap-dev 3. Say YES to continue 4. Type: sudo fing --interactive 5. Type F to setup your Fingbox account 6. Launch File Manager 7. Click on Tools, then Open Current Folder as Root 8. Go to: /usr/lib/fing/int.d and COPY fingbox-sentinel.raspberry and fingbox-sentinel 9. Go to: /etc/int.d and PASTE fingbox-sentinel.raspberry and fingbox-sentinel 10. Close File Manager 11. Launch LX Terminal 12. Type: sudo apt-get install chkconfig 13. Type: sudo chkconfig --add fingbox-sentinel 14. Type: sudo chkconfig --add fingbox-sentinel.raspberry Again this is based on an older tutorial for Jessie, so the file names may be different but the process should be similar just make sure you use the armhf files from the zip.
