The #Benjolin is a famous module originally designed by Rob Hordijk and OEM'ed in a lot of DIY projects. It's is gaining a lot of attention since Sam Battle (Look Mum) built two and version 2 is available from After Later Audio. My V2 has arrived too! The Benjolin is a clever noise maker which - i am not a technician so forgive me if I don't explain it right - uses two square wave oscillators which are cross modulated by a shift register mangler (the rungler), two derived triangle waveforms and a cross patched dual peak filter you can ping. It's a great module for creating abstract rhythmic textures and insane drones. It doesn't really track to pitch but it's definitely possible to create music with it (Benjolin V2 video coming soon). This video is inspired by the Benjolin and I've been trying to recreate it's vibe with Maths, Wogglebug and QPAS. Since QPAS is really important in this patch I decided to switch to the Tape & Microsound Music System layout for this video, but the Shared + QPAS will work just as well. Maths is the main noise maker here and I may have discovered yet another cool patch for it. Note: Just realized this video features stereo pulsewidth modulation.
Note, I did the Walking Dead theme myself at the end of the video, so it's a cover, not a copy. It's composed by Bear McCreary and recorded in Ableton with EastWest/Spitfire plugins.

OK. I received my Benjolin V2 today and it's amazing. But it's really cool to hear how close Maths came to do an 'impression'. The real one, however, is something else! It's a sound design dream.

looking forward to your benjolin video, been looking at the benjolin too these days, then i thought, two oscillators, weird random modulation sources, a filter - i got all of that in my setup already...play with that instead of buying something new again... I love how this is so slow, when i do this kind of stuff it always ends in total weird chaos, everything wobbling and screeching at the same time.

@@snorrevonflake I was thinking the same, but the crosspatching in this thing is amazing and the V2 has so many outputs to play with. This 'rungler' can also drive FX and modulate other gear. My mimeophon sounds completely different with it. But indeed, exploring its vibe with other modules is a fun puzzle to solve.

It was never intended as such :) I am not a big fan of QPAS because of the resonant ping. I love ladders a lot more and I prefer the MMG over the Q. But this patch really needed a QPAS.

Hi, the benjolin and the blippo box are not the same , the benjolin was originally a DIY project. the blippo box is a improved successor as a stand alone instrument that could be ordered from Rob. benjolin euro rack modules - some authorised clones - came later.

I think the blippoo box was first, benjolin came later. But I don't think that's really important because this video is about Maths. When I do my Benjolin V2 video I'll do my homework and maybe even check with Rob Hordijk about it because he lives in the same place as I do.

@@CinematicLaboratory Blippoo box came first and the Benjolin was meant as a DIY project for workshop only. Then years later people started getting in touch with Rob and be licensed to produce some modules. The design are in a way similar but completely different. Not the same filter and not the same "modules". But I love your vid. Didn't know you were in The Hague.
