This is such an informative video. Thank you! I love that you encouraged Elonie to make her quilt without being fussy about straight lines. Funny story: Years ago I had a Home Ec teacher, Mrs. Marshall, who taught me a great lesson on my need to be “perfect”. I was making a wool plaid shirt and every time I topstitched the yoke it seemed to get the plaid off a bit. I tried every which way to make it right. About the 4th or maybe more time I was removing the stitches she said to me, “if you rip that out one more time I am going to give you an F”! I responded, “but the plaids don’t match!” She took the shirt, and told me to stand 4 feet away from her. I did. She held up the shirt and said, “cross your eyes”! I did. She said, “do the plaids match”. I said, “well yes they do!”. Lesson learned! I think sometimes we are too hard on ourselves and get caught in the weeds of perfection instead of enjoying the process and realizing the product will always bring joy! The shirt went on to earn first place in the county fair!

I have a quilt that I made about 27 years ago that is home spun fabric mixed with flannel fabrics. I mixed quilt quality fabric with big box store fabric. I pre-washed everything ahead of time. The front of this quilt has held up well over time, but the back has worn away. This quilt spent most of it's time on the back of a couch and was actually used more in the winter of course. I didn't know that binding on the bias lasts longer, thank you for this tip.

I soak all of my fabric in shallow dish pans in my tub. This way any extra dye is released, remaining fabric chemicals removed and shrinkage done. Then I gently rinse and squeeze by hand and hang up on my clothesline. This method prevents raveling on the edges. Yes it’s a little extra work but prevents many headaches. 😊

I took a class years ago from Mary Mashuta (she was known for working with homespuns). Her thought was that if you tried to cut them straight and a couple were off, it would stand out more than if you just cut them and didn’t worry about how straight they were. I’ve made several quilts with homespuns and they wear well.

Good morning, Corey! Thank you for your opinion on my woven question! I am interested to go through the comments and see if other people agreed with you, and to see how their woven quilts have held up over time. This was such an informative video! Everyone had great questions, and you did a great job at answering them. Last name, not that it matters, is pronounced Ask-You. When my husband and I started dating, he told me, "It's Ask-you, like ask you a question, NOT A-skew, like something crooked!" Apparently, he grew up with lots of jokes about his last name, lol. Congratulations to Elonie on her quilt! It looks amazing! I hope it encourages her to do another one, and soon! It sounds like it will be the perfect blanket to snuggle up in on the upcoming cold nights! Have a blessed day!

Congratulations to you and your daughter on her 1st quilt. She will treasure it and the time she spent with you making it. ❤ I ALWAYS prewash fabric with hot water and a color catcher. That way it shrinks and bleeds before I give it away as a gift. Also prewashing gets rid of most of the dust and chemicals that make me sneeze! I serge the edges being careful to only cut a sliver off. I do like the idea of clipping the corners too.

@@CorianderQuiltsso if I starch the flannel prior to cutting etc, will it then shrink a bit like quilting cotton does? In which case do I then still need to wash it to ensure any shrinking is happening before I make the quilt top or can I then skip the pre wash stage ? You can tell by my question that I never pre wash my quilting cottons , I only did it once and I ended up with a tangled mess of fabrics and threads, not keen to repeat it if I can achieve it by starching ❤
@rebeccamulkern1051Ай бұрын
I go overboard with my colour catchers when I throw in the washing machine a quilt that has reds or navy and light colours, I usually use about six or even eight, and I put one in the drier too, they are so inexpensive that for me it’s not worth it risking it, but loads of good quality quilting cotton doesn’t bleed ,even the reds surprisingly as my colour catchers come out without much or any colour. And I always put in my quilt label the advice to use many colour catchers when washing it, as I don’t expect a recepient to know about it
@karena7950Ай бұрын
@rebeccamulkern1051 yes, starching shrinks the fabrics ... general rule is if you starch, you starch all your fabrics in that project ... wash when it is completed to remove the starch

There's another thing you can do to set dies that I learned from a guy who was just fearless about dying plaid fabric into other color ranges. He told me that when I ran the washer after the first wash of dying the fabric, to add a little laundry soap like usual, and then also add a cup of salt to set the dye. It works like a charm if it hasn't already bled. I used to re-dye my husband's jeans when they got faded and I would add a cup of salt on the second washing and it really did hold for a long time. I'm sure some of you have heard about this but I thought I'd share it.

Thank you for the many tips on using woven fabrics Corey! I have used a few many yrs ago that were painfully difficulty, due to all the fraying🤦♀️ Fraying is the number one reason I starch heavily, using any fabrics. Ugh! Thanks for answering my question. Yes, our quilts are sisters. I think that was “the pattern” when our rag quilts were made. I don’t believe color catchers were available back then. Nowadays I am a pre-washer for all yardage except for fabrics to be used to make rag quilts. When I pre-wash, I use Synthrapol and then sometimes do a Retayne treatment for reds. I also use either Carbona Color Grabbers or Shout Color Catchers every time I wash any of my quilts. Today’s video was great. I enjoy learning how other quilters handle tricky fabrics or prints. I am a plaid or gingham avoider, and I fussy cut stripes, dots, and prints in lines when I use them.
