Sharing the art supplies that I regret buying and returned, as well as the mistakes I've made, so that you don't make them too.
:P I know that there will be different opinions as art is often very personal as is what we love using.

I looove supply regrets videos. "I was smitten because x, it didn't meet my needs because y, instead I find myself using z" has so so so much more value than any haul video. Sometimes things don't meet our expectations and that's okay!! What you learned from a supply, or what you realized you *don't* like about it is more important to me than what you do like about it. Especially if your art style is different from mine and you're using it differently!

I would love a retrospective of past hauls and what became of value in your art vs. What you later learned wasn't for you personally as an artist. I also loved that this video addressed the regret of an action more than the regret of of the supply itself! We can avoid so many purchasing mistakes by taking your advise and slowing down and becoming both intentional and informed before buying!

Don’t give up on the dot cards!!! I got the Daniel Smith dot cards and as soon as they arrived I set to activating every colour and doing a little wash around the dot so I could feel how they responded and see the colours more accurately. It helped me make good choices for a custom palette. And, if I ever need a colour I don’t already own there is actually a really good amount in the dot sample that I can (and have) used to make art with.

I agree. While they are overpriced, they save you from buying colors you can't actually use. Also, it's nice to be able to refer to a swatch and mix it myself when a class or tutorial calls for a specific color.

I used to regret my cellulose sketchbooks for watercolor. Now I am just angry that these companies think it's okay to market them as being for watercolor when they clearly are not. They should be labeled as mixed-media at best.

Maybe for some. I have a couple non cotton watercolor sketchbooks I actually love though. The huge problem is you cannot tell them apart from the absolute trash sold at the same places. :/

There are some cellulose watercolor papers that are quite good--I like Bockingford watercolor paper (made by St Cuthbert's Mill that also does cotton watercolor paper). I get these in sheets from fine art suppliers like Jackson's or Blick's (I'm in the United States and there are both physical stores and an online website). Bockingford comes in tints as well as white. Also not all cotton paper is good either. Quite a bit of difference in something like Arches that uses pristine cotton "linters" and some Indian or Chinese off brand that probably uses recycled cotton or rag from scraps or clothing so the" white paper" is more lavender or gray. I think that watching channels like SketchenScrubs will help you learn a lot about supplies because I have made my share of big mistakes too over the years. I thought I was terrible at watercolor for years because I had no idea that I was using both the wrong paint and the wrong paper! What you like or dislike about certain supplies are very subjective, and depends on how you do your art and what you're trying to achieve. I think this video did a great job explaining how not everything is for every artist.

I used to be dot card resistant, until I bit the bullet and got a Daniel Smith dot card.! One of the best decisions I’ve ever made. A small investment that will save you money in the long run. My tip, set aside a realistic amount of time, say 4 to 8 weeks, and use every art supply you own. Every paint, pencil, pastel, medium, marker, brush, palette etc you own. Use at least two pages of every sketchbook, pastel paper, watercolour paper, canvas. Use everything in that time frame and if it doesn’t serve you, then let it go to someone who will enjoy them. Gifting will serve you in a spiritual way. You can then reorganise and use your loved supplies to your hearts content. X I really enjoyed your honesty ❤ x

You are right about DS dot cards. They served me to not overconsume. Every tube I wanted to buy , I kind of ran out of the excitement of the buy goblin and satisfied that urge through dot cards and also narrow down my colours to maybe 2-3 tubes. Also about giving art supplies away. I was lucky my friends worked for hopelink and Mary’s place seattle. I was able to give away boxes of non toxic water based crayolas , gel pens and Artist loft colour pencils and watercolours. I felt relieved and light.

The Schmincke palette was a disaster for me and I'm not alone. After a while the water bottle expanded and the whole thing became unusable. And that sloping lid ..... And other makers have seem to have the same issue. It seems to be the design. So I'm glad you returned it. Also I look at the pile of sketchbooks I bought and shake my head. I try to be very careful about purchases now and I think I'm enjoying myself more getting to really get the most of what I have. So many wise words. Thank you.

I was so confused by the dot card thing until you mentioned the price, then I gasped, lol. My Daniel Smith dot card was under $5 US. One of my deepest desires is like an art supply thrift stores where you could donate supplies you didn't love and try new ones for cheap. This is a great video that highlights so many of my issues, lol. I have stacks of sketchbooks that I need to get rid of because it took me way too many years to figure out what kinds of paper Iike. of course I have 40 years of art supply collecting so it's way out of hand. Subbed.

Such intense respect for your take on this. I love that you expressed how something may work wonderfully for someone else's art as opposed to how it would work for your art. I've had the same experiences and folks tend to look at me oddly when I don't like a "favorite" in my field. Looking at the performance vs. the "hype" is always hard for me. I get sucked in with packaging and listening to someone talk about how much they love something and I always want that same joy from my supplies. I've rehomed so many supplies because they just weren't something I enjoyed.

Same, and I've seen plenty of reviews and close-up photos that show that their metal tin and its paint coat aren't the best, specially for that price. That's why I got the small bijou box (but without the water reservoir) from their retro line which is as cute and with a better finish, and has been many times on sale on Jackson's :)

True about the exuberance some have when they are reviewing. I watched a person trying out non-cotton sketchbook with watercolors and it buckled like crazy and she said, “Oh, well I actually like when paper buckles” I am not mean but I asked her in comments if she really liked severe buckling. We do have to watch what the products are doing in the videos. If we are experienced we will see how the paint flows or if there are marks left after a watercolor pencil is used. Thank you, great video.

@@trinec9320 don't give everything away until you've really thought on it. I'm more of a mixed media artist but then I just waffle back and forth to using one different medium at a time! I gave away all of my Kuretake and Tombows (and a bunch of other things) away to a little girl's dad on Facebook who was fostering her interests in art. I'm glad I gave her most of the things including some cellulose sketchbooks but I regret giving away my Kuretake and Tombows (which I have since had to pay again to replace!) 😂 The other markers and pencil crayons and a Paul Rubens palette I was happy to give her because I think they will give her a real boost as a beginner artist 🧑‍🎨 💕💕

I make better choices when I just put it in my Amazon cart and then choose the “save for later”. Even waiting 24 hours or rewatching a video about it helps me reassess why I do or do not want or need another art product.

I don't think you trashed the brands at all. I think you made some really valid points about the mistakes we all make when we watch art videos and then feel we must get those same exact supplies - without taking a beat to figure out if they will actually work for us and our own type of style or techniques. I'm primarily a card maker and I've gotten sucked in to buying stamps and inks that I know aren't really my thing just because of the excitement of the KZbinr.

I'm with you on the Derwent Inktense Blocks. Unfortunately, I bought the 36 set (slaps forehead) and couldn't return them once swatched. I thought that they would work similarly to the pans, especially since some You Tubers use them like they'd use the pans. I had a few Inktense pans and liked them, so when I went to get more I decided the blocks would be a much better way to go, best of both worlds between pan and block! Thankfully I got a decent deal on them, but they are grainy, streaky when painted out and not the same as the pans at all. I do have fun sometimes just sketching with them, but I'd rather have something else. And I use the experience with the blocks to avoid the pans as well, which is a shame My other issue is I have to talk myself out of getting certain products just because they're a good deal after You Tubers who get free product from the manufacturers sing their praises. For instance, I have to literally talk aloud to myself to keep myself from getting Paul Rubens watercolors, because I'm so curious. I say, "you have a drawer full of Daniel Smith tubes, you have lots of Qor, you have pans of other great watercolors, what would these paints bring you that your other paints wouldn't?" I sometimes justify buying other items I'm also pining for by NOT buying these products. Luckily, I've found some reviewers who are still truly unbiased and I tend to listen to them more than others. I know that You Tubers don't deliberately lie, but their opinions might be unconsciously slanted on keeping the free products-to-review stream going. Dot cards tend to have quite a lot of paint on them really, however, probably not 40 pounds worth, so I'm glad you could return the card. DOT cards come in handy when you really love a line and want to figure out new colors to get...although really if you watch several swatching videos, you can get a feel for what paint colors look like. Okay, as you can see, you've triggered my ongoing inner struggles so I'm done. My final words: "Yeah, what she said." Thanks for your thoughts and for the validation.

I LOVE the small Intense blocks and have had no issues with them. I prefer them over the pans. The way to use them is to put wet brush to block, and sometimes then onto a palette, NOT to scribble with them on paper and expect to be able to wash that out into smooth pigment.

You are an absolute delight! I love your videos and this one was fantastic!! Your honesty about the M. Harding paints made my soul sigh. I am like you and adore granulation. They don't have a dot card but if you reach out to them, they will mail a swatch card of all the colours (actual swatches of their whole line of paint in addition to a glossy brochure). I studied it for hours and contemplated what seems to be eternity. For some reason they just didn't speak to me. But I felt a bit of pressure to jump on the bandwagon to buy some. So far I have still resisted and your comment about your regrets regarding them helped me fully realize that likely they are just not for me and let it go. One regret I have is selling off my A. Gallo paints. My style has change a bit and now would be more conducive to enjoying them fully. But at the time money was tight and couldn't justify keeping them when I knew I could get a lot of money selling them off. One day I will get a few half pans of them again and be intentional about which ones I choose. I would adore their dot card but very much like you, I just can't justify the high cost at this time. Thank you again for your honesty and for sharing of your passion and knowledge. Wishing you all things wonderful in 2025. xoxo

Have you thought of selling your Schmincke? I was watching another KZbinr who was having similiar problems with the lid. She had an idea that I thought was clever was to use a kneaded eraser under the mixing lid to make it more level but that would require you to keep it on a surface and I don’t know if that would work for you out in the field. I’ve always liked that whiskey painter but now I am glad I didn’t get it. I also like the comment you made and I think it sums up lots of us watching art hauls. You said that you got caught up in listening and watching how it works for that youtuber’s art without really thinking about how it would work in your art. You are so right!

I had the same hesitation with a Gallo Watercolor’s, but I am happy to say that the purchase I made. I absolutely do not regret at all in any way, shape or form. They are very different in the sense that they’re not super bright like some other water colours like Daniel Smith, all their water colours are beautiful, but they are on much more of the natural spectrum obviously, with a few exceptions, I often like to mix them with a colour here or there. from another brand, if I want a bit of vibrancy underneath, but when I’m doing florals and stuff they work so beautifully landscapes and just natural greenery. They are definitely in a class all of their own and in Australia. They’re even more expensive. I lashed out when they had a sale a couple years ago and got the 48 set and I have added to it since and I still don’t regret my purchase. It was very expensive well over 6 to $700 but the quality is amazing but the best part is there. Service their customer service I have sent them emails about queries or wanting to add something I even at one point had a defective brush that I bought in a sec and they were so quick to respond so lovely and sent me a brand-new brush free of charge and they are just lovely to communicate with. Sometimes you do actually get what you pay for, and would love to try the deep deep light water colours, but that is even more of an investment for me as half pans are starting at $25 Australian each the a Gallo are expensive but not as expensive depending on the colour and again you really can’t compare handmade Watercolor brands to brands like Roman or Daniel Smith because the way they’re made and the cost they’re able to cut my mass producing is very different. To a small business and the overhead that they have I’m not a business person at all never had a business but that much I do know.

They're my number two all time favourite after Roman Szmal and I paint with them frequently. I started with the Mixing set because I knew it would give me a good base from which to work out if they were my type of thing and, while expensive, it wasn't that much more than the equivalent factory produced paints from companies like Daniel Smith, M Graham, Michael Harding etc. Also totally agree with you about their superb customer service, I asked them if I could change up an order as I realised I'd purchased a colour I already had, and they swapped it out no problem. I also bought 11 paints once, and they still put them into a tin for me even though that's supposed to be an option for purchases of 12 pans! Plus their packaging, attention to detail and the free samples they sent out are fantastic.

Sometimes I get frustrated with being poor. I'm on disability, but the amount of thought and care that goes into my purchases and planning means less regrets. And it's reviews that help me refine my art supplies.which isn't to say I am delighted with every purchase (inktense pencils I'm looking at you) but I enjoy the research and for the most part I have great supplies that work the way I want them to but for a reasonable price.

Everybody deep into a hobby has „regrets“. I know I do. I‘m guilty of impulse and mood shopping. I have over 60 fountain pens, 200+ inks and tons of notebooks and paper piles. And then there’s art supplies. I try things and some can‘t be returned, but what I‘ve done is to donate art supplies I didn’t like or just wasn’t using to a young mothers shelter for young moms with newborns without support. Retirement and nursing homes are also good to donate to. Thanks for sharing.

7:19 This encompasses something I commented on your 'destroying YT' vid about understanding. You understand what makes the creator excited and how your feelings relate to that... then you dont get consumed by the 'joy' they feel because you know that joy isnt tied to your joy. Sometimes using some of the products they are excited about helps... if you also find joy in them, then you know you have an understanding. And if not, then you know the joy you feel at their excitement isn't your own joy over the product, its the joy of seeing them happy.

I think you’re absolutely right on price and then expectations. There are a lot of videos who get pencil crayons for free and get just as excited as someone using Caran D’ache Luminence; however, you put them beside one another and you can easily tell the real best product right away. Not that the others aren’t also good if you lower your expectations. And brands are so differently priced from one side of the world to the other. Derwent in the US is significantly less expensive.

Thank you for your valued opinion. As somebody else already wrote: These regret videos are more helpful than art hauls. You can come to your own conclusions when you hear what people didn't like about an item and you can assess if that would bother you, too. For example your issues with the whisky painter from Schmincke. My issue wouldn't be the hanging mixing lid, but that the palette is too tiny for me. And you are right: Everybody is different and is looking for different things. So, just because somebody else is excited about an art medium and wouldn't want to miss it for the world, that doesn't mean that the same applies for everybody else. Funny, you mention that the supergranulating paints from Schmincke are the only ones you really like from Schmincke. For me it was a huge (!) buyer's regret to have bought them. So many were so thrilled about them and I saw so many really lovely paintings in which they were used. But after getting them, I realized that I don't really like them. For me, they feel "muddy". I do like A.Gallo a lot though, I have the 36 naturale set and the 48 standard. As for the dot cards in general: I like having them because they give me an overview about the range a company offers. But if you really want to get to know the paints, you have to buy them. Very often the paper the dots are on is nowhere near the paper quality you usually use. I'm saying that with Daniel Smith in mind. On the base of their 266 (?) color dot cards (at least A4 sheets!) I ordered some paints that are unique for Daniel Smith. And some really surprised me when I got the tube paints, despite having tried out the paint on the dot cards (Green Apatite Genuine and Iridescent Sapphire flashed me the most, not a fan of some of other people's favourites like Moon Glow. Everybody is different.) P.S.: I love the Inktense pencils because they are wonderfully convenient because you can combine drawing and painting, with lovely brilliant hues (for me better than other watercolour pencils). But the blocks were another case of buyer's regret. You lose the advantage of drawing with them and if you have good watercolours the blocks are no useful addition. Lesson learned. I can relate to your warning against bulk buying (buying many of the same type before you know what you really like)! However, especially with sketchbooks one has to try out different sizes and paper qualities before one knows what one really likes. Another learning process. Thank you for many really good pieces of advice!

I think the A Gallo dot cards are an absolute steal at £38 for their full range of watercolours and incredibly helpful for those deciding to try them out but not wanting to just buy pans on spec. I think it's worth remembering they're handmade paints, not mass produced, so that increases the cost. At the end of the day, each individual has a price point they're willing to pay and I can completely understand that A Gallo is too expensive for many. They didn't do the dot cards when I bought my first set, so I got the mixing set, knowing that it would work whatever I thought of the paint itself as it had been deliberately designed as such. For me, I think Daniel Smith is overpriced for how it performs as a mass produced paint, so, as you rightfully point out, it's all down to our own personal views on how we see and use a supply :)

I learned from each product I purchased but now am refining my selection of watercolors and gouaches. I need to focus much more on active art creation rather than material consumption/purchases. Our mistakes inform our future purchases. Hopefully, others are enriched by my stash donations to them.

You’re so brave to post this😜 seriously though, I love the honesty. I’m certain many of us can empathize with art purchase regrets ( for me the following handmade watercolors: earthmineral arts, wildthorne, Matteo grilli, Mac marts, lighthouse cove. For professional watercolors, I’m not loving the maimeri halfpans in the beautiful silver tin) it’s challenging since many of us don’t like to speak negatively of purchases we don’t like but if it helps someone to save money it can be helpful and a incentive to improve products. I wish I had art buddies close by, I would let them try anything in my stash before they purchased and possibly end up with regrets (or if they get sick of the ite) I do have a fair amount of supplies and love most of it. Thanks for the video. God bless and Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁

You have described what I got caught up in during my early days of watching Art KZbinrs and seeing hauls for the first time. It ALL looked fabulous and made me feel that I needed it because they were so excited about their new products. It’s so much better to watch an art haul recap a few months later and see if the supply was actually used and liked. I rarely watch hauls or reviews of products that were sent to people (unless it’s something like Etchr which I already loved before seeing it on KZbin). It is so disappointing to spend money on something, anticipate its arrival and then find out it doesn’t work for your style (or is less than perfect). I debated the A Gallo dot cards at one point, but when converted to Canadian and shipping/duty added on, the price became ridiculous. So, I ordered one of their signature 12-pan sets from Jackson’s to try them out. I’d rather pay duty/shipping on the actual product than on the dot cards😅. I also debated that Schmincke palette but I skipped it because I’m like you and only like their super-granulating paints or their gouache (although there is nothing wrong with their regular paint, it just doesn’t entice me much).

I am a Gallo convert too, though only a beginner. I just bought the signature 36 for over £200 a few weeks ago, and then thought I'd try the Natural tubes - also at over a £100. I therefore couldn't really afford to splash out on the dot cards. I think my logic is that the colours are generally amazing, so I would try these different 48 or so - not sure if there are any repeats, but don't think so - and see how they go, and start experimenting from there. But it felt like the outlay itself was enough already! It will probably be a long time before I buy any more supplies. I also have a very cheap sparkly set for £3 or 4 that I really enjoy using for Christmas cards etc, so between these and some Faber Castell wc pencils I'm good for now. But Lucky you that you can afford to induce in the dot cards - you must be encountering so many beautiful colours from Gallo.

I had to learn how to not use them like watercolors. My favorite travel palette is one of those basic metal tin palette. My favorite is likely made in China and has 3 mixing areas in the top lid. They are relatively deep for mixing a good amount of color for a large background wash.

I wish I’d seen something like this 4months ago when I started out ❤ I have gone through so much stuff, not always impulse buys but based on reviews and instead of buying a small amount I go all in then find I don’t really like it anyway. I started with a super cheap set of pans to see if I liked painting (no regrets) then I moved onto MEEDEN tubes which I’ve barely used but also don’t regret, then a set of Derwent cheap tubes which I think I’ve used 3 times, then Kuretake which I love love love (now have nearly all of them except metallic and pearl which aren’t my thing, after that based on reviews I bought not one but two different Cotmans set and I don’t like them at all and have moved to Roman Szmals which I love. In between all of that I’ve bought some cheap little temu dedepraise pallets that I’ve used once. I went nuts on sketchbooks and paper and could fill a shop, thankfully a majority are 100% cotton and I don’t mind mucking around with other media like acrylic markers and pastel pencils etc in the cheap non cotton ones but I have so many of them 😱 Among all of that I bought several sets of brushes and I end up using the cheap one the most, oil pastels (no regrets I love them) pastel pencils, acrylic markers (way to may sets), watercolour pencils (no regrets I like them more than paint) coloured charcoal pencils, gel pens, pencil rolls, storage drawers, pencil cases, watercolour markers, cheap ones now I’ve ordered the Kuretake ones (no regrets) desk storage, rice paper, books (some regrets) daylight lamp (no regrets) and so much more stuff some I love some I don’t. I needed maybe a quarter or less of what I bought but too late now 😂 part of it is my PTSD shopping is my equivalent of gambling. So now I’m going to make up a couple of packs with the MEEDEN and Derwent paints, brushes and some cheap paper to give to some people who can’t afford them but want to paint with more than a cheap supermarket set. Sorry that was a ramble but suffice to say I think what you’ve done with this video is really helpful 👍 I now watch 1yr on what I use and what I don’t art haul videos to help counteract the art haul ones 😂

At least you returned them, I never get round to doing that. when you're a beginner and like nice things it''s easy to focus on materials rather than building skill. My first impulse buy was the large set of holbein colored pencils i had to buy direct from Japan. their lightfastness is poor too. I rarely use them and no one needs one hundred and fifty colur pencis. It's so much fun to buy stuff but at some point you have to knuckle down and work with the materials that really suit what you''re trying to do.

It makes videos like this helpful, as its focusing on what you want out of the supplies and if it works for you or not and explaining why you returned them gives an insight on whether it would be good or bad for me too. (Sorry, Im not sure my sentence made much sense there !)I also agree the dot cards are tempting but ultimately too expensive (for me). I don't know, Shmincke's granulating watercolors just seem like a over-hyped product. Yes, a few of the colors are nice, but if you look closely at each granulating set, they all (generally) have a green, a blue, a brown, and then like a red or a yellow or a purple, ect. But all the colors from each palette looks generally the same. And I have heard that they use the same pigment basically. Again, some of the colors are nice, but I think overall, Shminkce is a very over-hyped brand that is snooty with their prices. That being said, I still am going to try them someday when my budget allows lol 😅🤣
@annika8877
@annika8877 2 ай бұрын
I have way too many colors already 😅 so something I did was to check which pigments are in each of their granulating colors and I got these pigments separately (at least you can find every pigment in their range, but of course I cannot be 100% sure that they have the same pigment size etc). So in these few times that I want to have such granulating and separating colors, I can mix them myself. For lighter colors it works better, I just feel it is more difficult to mix darker colors from pans. So for these it could be worth to buy the granulating color directly from Schmicke.

@@annika8877 Oh, yeah, I can't deny loving convenience colors my self. I think I'd personally find the colors I love and buy them; I'm just saying I wouldn't buy all the sets, because they seem to repeat each other, especially the yellows, blues, browns, ect. For instance, I figured out how to mix my own Cascade Green, and Jadeite Genuine. But I am still going to get the tubes for them, because I love the colors. However, I like Rose of Ultramarine, but don't like it enough to get a tube, so I'd mix it with French Ultramarine and Quin Rose.

I would be interested to see if the super granulating are good. Unfortunately I bought the Schminke retro set of eight pans in the black Friday sales and was a little underwhelmed, so I think the's coloured my impression of the brand now..

@@evangelinewilliams1239 Some of the pinks look nice, but all the swatching vids I have seen of them look so weak. It's disappointing how underwhelming Schmincke is for it's price. I do want to try their potter pink though, that one looks pre-tay. 😆😍

Would love the haul overview. Now I am off to watch the other two videos you mentioned. Also I love the idea of not overbuying. Appreciate a more thoughtful approach to art and art supplies.

This is such a good video. I’m so guilty and so regret the overconsumption too 🫣 for me, I for example watch watercolour videos and then have to have all the different ones, then I’ll move to coloured pencils and need all the brands, then I’ll see something else I want to get kitted out for, and so it goes on. I’ve now accumulated so much stuff and half I’ve never touched. I feel so ashamed and the truth is there are always going to be new products, new techniques etc so you got to get to a point where you’re using the stuff you’ve already got! That’s absolutely my goal for 2025.

I have the same issue, but I found a great way to trick myself a little bit:) I gave myself some goals that are measurable. For example to finish all the sketchbooks that I've started, to complete some domestika courses, use certain art supply for x number of sketches, etc... and to each of these tasks I assigned a "reward". Some little thing from my wishlist. It's been working great for me. I'm creating more and get even better dopamine hit, because when I buy something, I actually had to work for it :)
