Great video Graig. Your Dad and I got a chance to have a really nice conversation at the American Legion Hall. You introduced us then. He may not remember but I certainly do. He’s a great guy and you are lucky to have him. And yes I agree with virtually everything he said about the hobby. My views may differ slightly only because I come from the football angle and he is baseball. And our differences would probably only be do to the difference of what was available from the manufacturer at the time, and popularity between baseball and football collectors. Baseball has always had larger numbers of cards and collectors. Overall this was a great video ! Thanks for your content

I’m a fading dinosaur of a set collector, I guess? Collecting… collectors… was as your dad describes back in 1987 as well. Commons in the trash at most card stores in LA during that era. Luckily I learned my “opening boxes/packs” lessons back in 1988-92. I will crawl into the future, trying to complete my 40’s football sets… my 48-71 Basketball, and any other single cards that strike me as beautiful or interesting. Seems like the instant gratification needs of most people these days handicaps almost everyone? The patience and dedication needed to complete sets is a dying trait. 😢 Oh well!

That’s not my takeaway at all. I think set collecting is great. I think many collectors have gone away from it, but that doesn’t mean that they SHOULD. I’m currently building a set myself….the 1888 Allen and Ginter pirate set.

Interesting conversation … I still collect sets. But, I’m mostly doing the 50s sets. Just finished the 55 set and working on 56 and 57. So, I guess maybe I’m proof of more people are moving to the 50s golden era. But, my collection runs counter to the trend of player runs.

We still put sets together, not all but there are a few we do each year. I wonder if the amount of different sets by Topps and Fanatics each year makes it hard to do this and plus wax is kinda expensive. Ive found buying lots on ebay helps at a reduced rate. I don’t have any vintage sets but i PC Lew Burdette. Cool to hear from multiple generations

Happy thanksgiving! I think the hobby will always be ''Buy What You Like ". A great example is the bunning card, you wouldnt buy it and your Dad would. Graig would rather have a Spahn card and id rather have a robin roberts.

I enjoyed your conversation with your dad regarding the current state of the hobby. Are today's modern cards Junk Wax Part II? What about manufactured scarcity? The answer to both questions was the same. The absurdity of having 75 different Ohtani Rookie cards (Judge, Trout ,etc as well) trying to figure out which one is the rarest and most valuable, coming to the conclusion that the value of these cards long term "will go way down". Sadly I kind of agree with him. Here's some food for thought... Trading Card Database, as of 12/15/24, lists 29,751 different Ken Griffey Jr. cards. According to Baseball Reference, Trevor McDonald, who made his Major League Debut on 9/29/24, was the 23,370th player in Major League History (going back to 1876, including the recently added Negro Leagues). There are more (different) Ken Griffey Jr. cards then the # of players who ever wore a Major League uniform!

But I always have trouble hearing him clearly. Since he has a light voice, is there a way to turn up the mic volume or perhaps seat him closer to the microphone? Hey Craig! Couple of Q’s. I see boxers of cards for sale priced cheap. Are they usually people wanting to off their collection for cheap. Do you think they do that because they don’t care about the hobby or wasting time trying to sell individually? Also, I have a ton of cards from the lates and early 80s. I know there are quite a few that are worth something, yet people are offering low ball offers? Do you think they do that because they think I didn’t look up the values or is it a common practice to pay nothing for a bunch of cards? Thanks in advance and hope you had a great turkey day!

This is so far a great video. It made me wonder if Mike Epstein cards are changing value and if his Senators cards are worth more than his Baltimore cards. 80' and back for me since I started in 1981. Henderson rook is a good starting point. Senators . Nice place to live. 😎

I bought a box of 86 donruss probably 20 or so yrs ago, lots of great cards but very few in 8 or better condition. Thanks fellas have a great holiday season

Some people just like being able to say they completed something. There are sets, that are not large, but others which can be time consuming. I'm all for set collecting it's important however to be mindful of the cost, and if they have the space as well.
