Run it without the brushes turning this way you can rule out the brushes- If the sound and smell is still there then it’s the motor and if not then try running the brushes. If the noise and smell comes back, then we’ve solved the mystery

Hey can you tell me why my Hoover carpet cleaner might be smoking?

If it smells. Like electrical smoke the you motor may have taken on water or your carbon brushes are bad- It could be a belt issue only if it smells like burnt rubber and you unit require a belt to run the brush roll.
