Sharkhide warning!

Just a little advice before you apply sharkhide to your boat

Sorry to hear, certainly the pain in your arms are long gone, but that memory of the application has likely not. I'm currently polishing the toons on my pontoon. Did two rounds of sanding first, 220 and 320 as they were in decent shape. But when it comes to the actual cutting of the aluminum, my arms are like jelly afterwards, and I still have one more cut before actual buffing. Then I get to do it on the second toon. Love this video! 🤣 I’m a 20 year body tech and I’ve never used Shark Hide myself. Im minutes from hitting a 29 Chevy rat rod. Let’s see if my experience with hand applied clears pays off Wish me luck 😅

I bought a new pontoon boat applied 2 coats per there instructions missed some spots I feel your pain.

Airplane stripper will break it down and it will turn yellow after it dries. Then use the lacquer thinner with terry cloth towels to remove the shark hide. After all that you can sand and polish.

This makes it a lot easier to remove.. or you can hit it with 400 on a rotary and just sand it off.. I just don’t understand why it turns brown after your boat has been in the water. I am doing some research on shark hide right now because we detail boats and I am trying to figure out why the is not working and the problem.. what I have found out so far is shark hide was not created for boats . It was made by chemist to protect decorative trim and then they came out with coated trim so shark hide was put out of business and they just put it in the shelf in the 80’s Flatwater found it and just started putting it in boats and using it again. I can’t figure out who thought this was so great for boats in the first place but it was not made for pontoons so maybe that’s why so many are having problems. I will report back when I can completely figure this out.

Did you clean it with laquer thinner first? Also was it hot out when you applied it?

I can't remember what the temperature was, and no I did not clean it with lacquer thinner first but the boat was brand new.. I've learned all my lessons about sharkhide you just need to be tedious and thorough

Pump sprayer. Mist it on it sections about 8ft. Remist, not allowing it to dry. Start the next section, overlapping the two. Remist, both sections making sure there is even coverage. By this time, you’ll be able to see the contaminates being removed and where you need to spot spray the heavier stained areas. It’s a process, that takes a little common sense, not a spray/wipe and rinse application. The last boat I did is a V16 that has been is nasty water for 25 years and never cleaned. Looks matte silver now and clean. Pontoons are the same. It’s best to find a good place to break your application and overlap. I would not ever use a rag to wipe any of these type of chemicals on, it’s less effective. Also, keep in mind this stuff will drop from your boat on other surfaces, including your trailer. If your trailer is aluminum it may make it splotchy. I usually spray the trailer rails at the same time, just to prevent this issue. You’re welcome.

Read the instructions.. use a buffer and go to a truck stop and get some anvil jelly..

I had to get nyalic off first, which took 2 days, with xylene and 3m pads on a palm sander!!. Its a protectant sprayed on by factory, Then of course did everything WRONG according to the owner of sharkhide and all the youtube experts. So you aren't the lone ranger. I acid washed my boat twice in 16 yrs. No more, what a pain in the azz! IF I DID EVER AGAIN I certainly wouldn't do a video ever again. Its a working boat, didn't care about how imperfect it was.

Very disappointed in this product. Spent so much time and energy on the prep work. Used the exact stuff the owner suggests even talked with him and we came up with a "plan" for application. It streaked as if sand were on the baby diaper. I will be buying my arm too
