ive been living in coastal florida towns all my life. the problem is that the news tells you every storm is going to kill you and then nothing happens, so people start ignoring the warnings and then when a storm comes along that will actually probably kill you the people dont evacuate and its a disaster.

>Brenda You think you have it bad? At least 50 percent of the entire populations in 38 of the 49 sub-Saharan countries live without electricity all the time - worse off, 51.4 million of 54.3 million people (94.7 percent) living in Liberia, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Chad, Sierra Leone and Malawi do not have electricity. Hope this puts things in perspective for you. Please be grateful for what you do have.

Prayers for all affected. Reminds me of cat 4 hurricane Matthew . The eye came over Southern Nassau where I lived. I did evacuate but I lost everything. When I returned home and opened door water gushed out. It was more then 6ft according to the lines on the walls . Everything was just floating. It will be hard, but with Gods help you all will get through it. Six years later I still haven't gotten most things I've lost. But I give God thanks.

I live in the Punta Gorda area, Charley was bad for us in 2004. Michael, Irma, Andrew - many other hurricanes dealt with yet this one....horrific, truly, horrific. We had part of our roof collapse during the storms peak, doors blown open. Shutters ripped off and my children, cats and I had to evacuate during the collapsed eye of the storm going over Charlotte Harbor with driving my familys home fifteen minutes away and Blessed we arrived safe. Still missing communication with friend's in the Marco/Fort Myers area. Prayers and kind loving thoughts to anyone impacted or your beloved ones. 🙏

>Claudia Smith It will not take years to recover - that's hogwash! I have been through many hurricanes cause I grew up in Florida, and the media outlets portray things far worse than they actually are. I encourage you to refrain from saying such scary things that will only instill panic in those who are unfamiliar with dealing with hurricanes. Buildings in Florida are constructed to withstand weather events like this. We had the eye of a cane go right over our house and suffered minimal damage.

We lived through Hurricane Michael. It was a state of “ this is not real” or a dream maybe even a twilight zone experience of some kind. We did leave our home but upon returning we found everything inside as it was before and only some damage to outside of our house but the worst was driving into a war zone…such devastation was beyond my comprehension! Our neighbors homes were trashed. We were so fortunate that it made us feel undeserving to be one of the lucky. After four years our cities are newer and almost completely restored but the Hurricane and Covid changed everyone…. Only time will tell what the results of the changes are……Whether better or worse.

I pray for these families. Let’s remain empathic and human for those who couldn’t afford to leave or are first responders that if they left things would be much worse.

Sharks in the water is unreal. These hurricanes effect people and ocean fish. So horrible all this happening to all effected by this raging storm. I hope many left and did not stay in this weather. It's not worth the risk of losing your life and your family.

The title starts with “sharks in the streets”, got my imagination off to the races! With a hurricane, I expect wind damage to homes, trees, plants and roads. I expect storm surges, heavy rains, tornadoes and flood damage. But imagine everything in chaos, debris flung everywhere, water up to the rooftops, nothing looks familiar. Then, add to that, snakes, sharks, jellyfish, alligators, live electrical wires, fire ants, waste water and God knows what else that can kill you in that “lake” that used to be your neighborhood! Then, when all of that drains away, comes the mold, wood rot, decay and diseases that all of that displaced water causes! The hurricane may be gone but it’s still reeking havoc for a long, long time. Unimaginable!
