I absolutely _love_ these phylogeny videos. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent in the wormhole that is Wikipedia, looking up phylogenies, clicking on certain clades, etc., for both extant and extinct sharks. Can't wait for more! Ooh! You should do one for carnivoria(if you haven't already, I can't remember.) Maybe split up the feliforms and caniforms. Also, I agree about shark week. It's become all sensationalism, or trying to make some huge deal out of something that's really that. Though to be fair, it's not like we learn all that much about sharks(that would interest "normal" people) from year to year.

@@carnivoresareoverrated3 yeah, the way Clint put the information seemed a bit misleading. The study used a computer model to estimate the bite force of a 7,000 pound great white. Trouble is, we don't even know for sure if a great white that big ever existed (the heaviest verified specimen is a little over 4,000 pounds). Compared to crocodiles, most sharks rely on how sharp their teeth are rather than on sheer bite force).

A potential Ray video? Yes please! If you think sharks are underappreciated on recent shark weeks, Rays have never had a dedicated week. Most people cannot distinguish between a Manta and a large freshwater sting ray or a small Devil Ray. At the high level, or detailed level, there is so much variety. I'd love to watch a long form video that dives deep into this (pun intended).

Clint! Why would you call my favorite marine animal something that "looks like an unholy hell beast"?? Frilled sharks are BEAUTIFUL my dude! Their long graceful bodies, being almost more eel-like than anything else, their massive eyes well suited to the near-total darkness of the deep, their red-tinged frilled gills looking like ribbons....And don't even get me STARTED on how COOL their teeth are! All those points, being almost crown-shaped, it's perfection. Just because they get the bends really bad at observable depths doesn't mean they're not beautiful. The frill sharks you showed were all in much too shallow water, and weren't showing off their beauty because they were feeling ill. It's like the blobfish fiasco all over again. Justice for the deep boys! Don't judge them on how they look near the surface! (Seriously though, Frilled Sharks have been my #1 favorite ever marine animal ever since I first learned about them from a Scholastic book fair flash card I got in middle school. I want nothing more than to learn more about my weird and wonderful frill friends. So if anyone knows anything about them, please do share.)

Great video, I love these kinds of taxonomy overviews which really help to untangle the tree of life for your viewers. I did notice a couple small (and completely understandable) mistakes in the cladogram graphic: For one, the shark pictured for Orectolobiformes is the leopard shark (Triakis semifasciata), which is actually a houndshark (family Triakidae) in the order Carcharhiniformes. What makes this mistake understandable is that zebra sharks (Stegostoma tigrinum), which are in Orectolobiformes, are also called leopard sharks in some parts of their range. Personally I think that S. tigrinum's adult pattern is much more leopard-like than T. semifasciata. Two, the pictures for Carcharhiniformes and Lamniformes seem reversed, with the former having a great white (Lamnidae) and the latter some kind of reef or requiem shark (Carcharhinidae). Then again they convergently evolved onto the same pelagic predatory lifestyle, and white sharks do look a lot like bull sharks in particular. Plus the great white's species is Carcharodon carcharias, but it's not a carcharhiniform, which adds to the confusion.

I, too, grew up on Shark Week and loving the educational content. And now, every year, I wait to watch something that is actually informative. This video was great and I'd love a deep dive (see what I did there?...) into more sharks!

Would love to see a video about rays! They're definitely my favorite non-tetrapods.

What a great video. Thanks. How about a video talking about all the unanswered questions about sharks (and rays)?

I didn't know shark week had changed. That's disappointing, I grew up on discovery channel and animal planet. The message over and over was that sharks are amazing and not scary. I even remember a few episodes of someone coming on to talk about their shark attack and injuries and how they recovered and learned to love the animals again. Very wholesome. Ugh these channels have changed to something completely unrecognizable, most of them have such fake and sensstionalized content. Clint, Im so glad we have someone like you. You are filling that void so well. I could easily see your channel being something featured on one of these channels when they were in their prime. You are like the Bill Nye of the modern era, bring education and hijinks to the masses. 💚
